CINNAMON TARN: A private gated luxury villa with architecture reminiscent of the stone arches and windmill towers (danish-tarn) of Danish sugar mill ruins, CINNAMON TARN, adorns the crest of a mountain 850 ft. above cinnamon beach. Every room has world class views of famous north shore beaches, the British Virgin Islands or Sir Francis Drake Passage to the northeast and a glimpse of St. Croix to the south.

Two identical master suites with king-size beds, baths, native stone shower towers and private decks are separated by the central living area with large screened gallery and expansive deck with heated large hot tub. Secluded second level library/bedroom reached by stair tower has optional king-size bed or twin beds, and its own deck, the ultimate in private sunbathing and relaxing by day or star gazing by night. Ceiling fans, if needed, are in all rooms. Tradewinds and mountaintop location make air-conditioning unnecessary. St John has an ideal climate; cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter than much of the continental United States

A Slice of Paradise!

How does one describe the perfect Caribbean villa? Cinnamon Tarn is a slice of paradise on one of the world’s most beautiful islands.

The villa is situated atop a hill overlooking Maho Bay. The view is unobstructed and from the back deck you can look across the channel to Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. The home is spacious and luxurious, and the owners spared no expense either in the design or building materials. Most of the home is on one vast floor, and the great room is flanked on each side with an open-air hall and a master suite. Each master suite has a private balcony and a stone shower that resembles a castle tower. A third bedroom is upstairs and also has its own deck. There is no air conditioning, but the house is built in West Indies style to allow the ocean breezes to pass through, so it is very comfortable.

The house was very clean and the amenities (scented soaps, welcome basket) were much appreciated. The water pressure was fine and we had plenty of hot water for washing dishes and taking showers. We did try to conserve water and electricity as much as possible as utilities are extremely expensive on St. John. The villa could use a few more lamps as it was hard to find enough light to read in the evening.

The kitchen is well stocked and has some basic spices available. Because the house was so comfortable and the view so spectacular, we chose to prepare most of our own meals. A gas grill is available for guests.

You will need a jeep or 4-wheel drive vehicle. The villa is several miles from Cruz Bay, and once you turn off the main highway, the road is extremely bumpy. The driveway itself is paved as soon as you pass through the private gate, but there is a half-mile or so of rough road. As you approach the villa, the driveway circles around a raised fish pond that lights up at night. The property is quiet and feels secluded, but if you look carefully, you will discover that the neighbors are surprisingly close.

The property managers were great. They arranged a private taxi to meet us at the airport and take us to the Red Hook ferry, and they also were able to secure a small discount at one of the local car rental facilities. When we had trouble getting the hot tub to heat, they sent someone to look at it and installed a new heater the next day.

We felt privileged to stay at Cinnamon Tarn and cannot wait to return. Yes, it really is as beautiful as the photos depict.

I debated writing this review because I don't want others competing with me for this gem. Our family has been coming to St. John for eleven years and have spent the past four or five at Cinnamon Tarn. It is a real gem. The house is beautiful and well maintained. The views are spectacular. The location is high enough on the island that nighttime breezes keep the house cool and keep the mosquitoes away.

The location in Catherineberg is perfect--right near the center of the island. All of the beaches are a short drive. Cruz Bay is only a few minutes away so you can head down for dinner and then escape back to peace, quiet, and the spectacular night sky. Coral Bay is not far either, and it is great to run there for some of the island's more eclectic eating spots.

The Seaview Homes group also does a great job, meeting you at the dock, help to arrange almost anything you need, and leave you at the house with a few bottles of Corona and some snacks in the fridge.

We've already booked our stay for next year and I only wish I could get a standing reservation because I want to make sure we end up back at Cinnamon Tarn year after year.

Cinnamon Tarn

The views are great. The house is just ok. It is in need of a lot of upkeep. It rained while we were here and ALL the windows and doors on the back side of the house leaked. Not small leaks, I'm talking puddles that we had to soak up with bath towels. The upstairs bedroom has a pull out bed, which is broken. We had to hammer it into place to get it to stay up. The upstairs also does not have a shower. There is a private shower in each guest room downstairs. Upstairs guest have to share a shower with one of the downstairs suits. There is not enough hot water for more than 4 people. The shutters on one of the upstairs windows is missing the handle it takes to close them. Parts of the driveway are not paved. Make sure you have a 4 wheel drive car. All things we were able to work around, but shouldn't have to.

Owner's Response: I have been the manager of Villa Cinnamon Tarn for 3 years. I have to address the critique written by Ms. Jerrika, on her third day ,was an extra person that was invited without our knowledge. She was a guest and not the party that reserved the villa. To this day, she has not paid to have stayed at the villa). With the exception of the rain leaking in the sliding doors because of heavy rains and winds, all of her facts were incorrect about the villa. The original reservation was for 2 persons. (4) persons showed up at the dock. Weeks before they arrived, I made them aware that there is a dirt road called John Head Rd. that leads into Estate Catherineberg where the Villa is located (right in the national Park). It is about a 2 min drive on a partially paved & dirt Rd until you reach the gated driveway, which is paved and leads up to Villa Cinnamon Tarn . The first inconsistency, the private gated driveway is paved all the way up to the villa with a circular driveway. The guest that reserved the villa was informed that there was a trundle king bed on the upper level with the stairway inside the villa with a half bath. The trundle bed is not broken but needs to be locked into place. I might add that again there were suppose to be 2 persons in the villa not 4 (2 couples, which makes me think they had more than 4 persons), as the villa has 2 king beds & a trundle. The PAYING guest was informed that there were 2.5 baths at the time of the reservation and prior to arrival . Concerning the hot water, we have a 60 gallon hot water heater and there is plenty of hot water. No guests have ever mentioned the lack of hot water. The shutters have one handle that open and closes both louvered windows. You pull the handle out of one and put it in the other window to open and close. The one thing that is correct is we had heavy rains up in Catherineberg a couple of days while they were there. At 800 ft up, the wind was strong and blowing the rain sideways and yes some water did seep in through the sliding doors all across the front of the villa and we are working on that. We are replacing the weather stripping. In summary, we received payment for 2 persons and there were 4 or more ? They have yet to send the balance that they said they would send for the extra persons when they returned home . The "YOUNG lady "that wrote this misleading review was incorrect on all accounts, with the exception of some water blowing through where the sliders close

Catherineberg is our favorite

We travel to St John annually and have tried many locations on the island. We prefer the less populated areas and Catherineberg wins our vote for best location. Cinnamon Tarn has the perfect layout for two couples with the bedrooms situated on either end of the living area for privacy. The bathrooms are great with large garden showers. In the past we have rented a house with a pool but have found that the water is usually too cold to enjoy. The hot tub was a great alternative. We loved watching the boat traffic in Francis Bay and Drake's channel. To do so I recommend that you bring binoculars. The kitchen had everything we needed (we cooked in several times to enjoy the view) and the laundry room was a bonus for those of us who travel lightly. The road to get to the house is a little rough but definitely worth the drive. Any issues that we had were handled promptly by Mark and staff. Looking forward to next year.

Best views on the island!

We knew the views would be spectacular but it is nothing like seeing it in person! Amazing! My husband and I stayed their for our wedding and we are so happy we made the investment here! Mark was accommodating and the villa had everything we needed! Thanks again tony and Flo! We will be back again.

Easy hike to Catherineberg ruins from house

USVI Nat'l Pk HQ in cruz bay--Reservations for organized hikes, tours and activities, i.e. Annanberg ruins, Reef Bay Trail, etc. Maps and Info for self-guided hikes and events.

House 5-10 minutes from most trailheads.

Nat'l Pk and private boat tours and rentals in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay for sight-seeing, snorkeling, diving, includes sunset tours, etc.

Ferry from Cruz Bay to BVIs, bring passport. Ferry from Cruz Bay to St. Thomas (Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie for shopping, many water sports, Coral World-aquarium and sealife feeding, etc.
