High school sweethearts, we met at El Dorado High School in Placerville. We purchased the Deck House from my parents who built the home in 1970 and remodeled it for a vacation rental. Always a favorite for the extended family, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandchildren, everyone loves coming to Gold Country Deck House.
Connie Stephens purchased this house in 1998
My Dad loves to tell the story of finding a contractor to build this house at the price he could afford. Dad hauled in the rocks for the fireplace and stone walls from a nearby quarry. The large rocks with the manzanita tree were hauled in Dad's pickup truck and the truck skimmed the roadway with its overweight load. Dad makes sure everyone knows how he situated the home on the property to take advantage of the shade of the oak trees in summertime, morning sun and the views year round. The Deck House includes family history.
We love sunsets at Gold Country Deck House. We love the proximity to historic downtown Placerville and its shops, antique stores, art galleries and cafes. We love the country ambiance, the secluded natural setting. In summertime, we drive to the American River to swim, have BBQ's, drive to Coloma to Marshall Gold Discovery Park. September begins Apple Hill season and visits to orchards, wineries and farms. November finds us visiting the Christmas Tree Farms. December we love wood fires and proximity to cross country skiing and Lake Tahoe downhill skiing. In spring, Daffodil Hill makes a spectacular display. Always there are farms and vendors of locally grown fruits and vegetables.
We absolutely loved your home. Thank you! Loved learning about the Veirs. Sounded like incredible people.
We have been consistently renting the Deckhouse for the last several years on our Summer stays in the Gold Country. It is truly a home-type property where, after a long day, you look forward to coming home to the most incredible sunset viewing you will find anywhere in the area. The house is like a time capsule right from 1971 and everything works and all you could ever need or want is at your fingertips. The location is ideal - not too far from Placerville and Hwy 50. The inside of the home is warm and inviting with a true Tahoe-style architecture - soaring beam and wood ceiling, stone fireplace and a huge deck that spans the width of the house with views going on forever to the West. Connie and Bill are very helpful and prompt with all communication, as well as always being available if you ever need anything. We always look forward to returning every year we come back to the area.
A strict NO smoking and NO pets policy is why we stay here. If that was different, we wouldn't consider it. Anyone that allows pets is asking for problems and once any fleas are in the home or pets have accidents on the carpet, you never get things back to the way it was before. Everything has always been clean and fully stocked with any supplies needed. The washer and dryer are also a big plus as well as a full kitchen.
There is a fold-out futon bed in the living room that has a privacy wall that folds out to create a mini temporary room. Our two kids who are 11 and 16 love to sleep on it and never have any complaints as the pads are without any hard metal frame or springs. There are instructions on how to use the fold out feature, right there with the couch.
In the morning and evening, you will see deer and turkey walking just below you on the deck. The whole ambiance of the backyard is one of feeling you are miles out in the country
My husband, Mother-In-Law, and myself spent 10 days at the Deck House. It felt just like walking in to our own home. It had everything we needed and more. The views were wonderful and all the wildlife around was great as well. We highly recommend this house for extended stays.
Gold Country Deck House is located in a nice, conveniently located neighborhood. It has an amazing view. Though dated, the house was immaculate and was the "best supplied VRBO" we have ever stayed in. Our party consisted of 4 adults and 2 children. The standard rental price is for 1 bedroom, including additional "sleeping arrangements" in the living room--a sleeper sofa we could not open and an uncomfortable futon . It was disappointing to have to pay extra to use the 2nd bedroom and bathroom which were downstairs. It is a nice place for 2 people......
All of us were very pleased with everything. The view is spectacular, unfortunately we were not there for the sunsets as we were at a seminar and the days were full from sun up to sundown. All needs were supplied and all slept well. Great to have internet! If we ever need to stay in the Placerville area again we will definitely return to the Gold Country Deck House.
From the moment my husband and I walked into the home until the time we unfortunately had to leave, we enjoyed every amenity and detail of the house. The owners have thought of everything! The place is so comfortable and quiet. We really enjoyed learning about the owner's family in reading the newspaper articles and looking at family photos, etc. We had fun playing ping-pong in the downstairs recreation room while taking a break from sitting on the deck watching amazing sunsets. And if you're into mid-century modern, this place has it all. Mercifully, the original touches and accents are mostly still there and meticulously maintained. What a great weekend we had! Hope to be back in the future.
We enjoyed over three months at the Gold Country Deckhouse and it was a great place to stay. There were many extra amenities that were included and the owners were very open and friendly. We had a beautiful view of the foothills and the sunsets were unbelievably gorgeous. We spent the winter months there and would love to return to enjoy the other four seasons. We would highly recommend it.
