lots of room

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this large home in Shelburne Falls. The house is very roomy with seven bedrooms and three full baths. Be aware, there are a lot of stairs to climb!

The owner was lovely and made sure we knew to notify her with any needs. Her housekeeper met us on arrival and showed us around the house.

The downtown is right there and very quaint. The Bridge of Flowers was a highlight. I would recommend this home for a large group.

Functional and moderately comfortable

  • 3 of 5

This house offers a few excellent features. The owner is responsive and accommodating. For example, during our stay, the outside lights stopped working and Susan sent someone to fix them immediately. She also responded quickly to emails, texts, and phone calls. The house is conveniently located within walking distance of Shelburne Falls, where there are restaurants, shops, and other services. The backyard is lovely and big and is a great place to grill and eat when the weather allows. There is a full bathroom on every floor, which is a rarity in old houses.

There are a few issues that travelers should be aware of before booking. The house has a pervasive smell of mold. The furnishings are old and many are in a state of disrepair. The house is clean, but many shelves and closets have personal items (presumably the owner's) stored on or in them. The cookware is old and while there are ample glasses for wine, there are few juice glasses or coffee mugs. WIFI is spotty and difficult to connect to. The rooms on the third floor of the house are hot in summer weather and need additional fans to make occupants comfortable.

Overall, there are few options for large groups in this area and we were grateful to be able to have a place that allowed all twelve of us to stay together. But travelers should be prepared for a functional and only moderately comfortable stay.

Owner's Response: I'm very sorry that Caitlin's experience was only moderately comfortable. As she herself says, I am a very responsive host. I have a housekeeper and handyman minutes away; had she mentioned it they would have set up extra fans, even bought more juice glasses and mugs. No one else was bothered by the few personal items but they would have been removed immediately had she let me know. There is plenty of closet space, all the dressers are nearly empty. Again, more communication would have really helped. Other reviews express a different response to our 19th century home with its well worn antiques. It is not for those who seek the contemporary over the vintage. We are however scrupulously clean. I have had the house checked for mold. There is none. There is sometimes a vegetative dampness outside depending on the weather that can misleadingly give that impression. While no other guests have experienced it, I will nonetheless recheck the matter. I take it very seriously. The comfort and happiness of our many satisfied guests is very important. Again, the house is not contemporary or sleek. It is very well kept up, thoroughly cleaned with personnel on call and offers lots of room and a distinct charm in a lovely village. I like to hear from my guests. I will be buying more fans, glasses and mugs. I expect this review to be balanced by others who really love the place, as have others in the recent past. I might add that we were communicating well, Caitlin told me several times that all was well when I inquired. Communication broke off however when I questioned her about the presence of a dog that I did not recall ever discussing. That might be useful info for her future hosts.

Delightful farmhouse in delightful village

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay in Shelburne Falls in Susan's rambling, comfortable and roomy home. 7 adults had our pick of multiple bedrooms on 3 floors (no one felt short-changed), with bathrooms on each floor. The home was clean and ready for us. The second floor spacious kitchen was where we spent time together, with plenty of room around the large farmhouse table to enjoy coffee and breakfast. It's an easy 5-10 minute walk into Shelburne Falls, which has multiple restaurants, a few small grocery stores, plenty of places to for snacks, drinks and conversation, and excellent candlepin bowling. Our destination for the weekend was the Green River Festival, where we spent our days and some of our evenings. Note: if you want a sleek modern open-plan house, the many charms of Susan's home will be lost on you. We heartily enjoyed the tasteful funky artwork and smaller rooms typical of older houses. Susan and her housekeeper provided excellent and responsive help, and were there to greet us when we arrived and orient us. A 5 star experience. We would DEFINITELY stay again.

Owner's Response: Guests like Fred and his friends make it all worthwhile. I want to say that he was an ideal guest in every way - punctual, positive and obviously appreciative, judging not only by this detailed and glowing review but also by the loving , immaculate way he left the house. Come back, Fred and bring more folks like you. True enough, it may not be for everyone, but those who choose to come to a redone 19th century, "shabby-chic" house, really do have a good time. And the village itself is worth a detour.
