Sometimes a house captures and expresses the spirit of a place so perfectly that it seems to be part of the natural landscape. Pitons Stargroves, perhaps the most unique villa in the Caribbean, is one such home. Located on a gently rolling hill near the tiny village of Morne La Croix, just a few miles from the sleepy port of Soufrière on the southwest side of St. Lucia - a region of small fishing villages, mountains and valleys, carpeted in rain forest.
Built from native materials - Greenheart wood from the St. Lucia rain forest and volcanic rock. The villa makes full advantage of its natural surroundings. The west side of the house is an 'open wall,' inviting one of the world's most breathtaking views into every room. It's also open (literally) to the fresh sea breezes of the Pitons valley and so well ventilated naturally that there's no need for air-conditioning.
About the House: Step out onto the villa's multiple decks and take in the panorama of the western cliff of the Gros Piton and the majestic Petit Piton - symbols of St. Lucia and a World Heritage Site - against the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea.
The villa has a spacious living room with a volcanic waterfall as its central theme and a full-size dining room that seats eight in complete comfort. There's a master bedroom suite, with a king-size bed, private sitting deck and full bathroom. Two guest bedrooms (one with a king-size bed, the other with twin beds) share an adjoining bathroom. The bathrooms are uniquely designed with shower stalls (but not tubs) cut into the volcanic rock. A third-story tower serves as a private sitting room or sleeping area. Because of the open design, expect to see small visitors now and then - innocent little lizards and frogs that come and go, happy to be left to their harmless ways, as you relax in the safe and cozy calm under the netting of your four-poster bed.
Pool and Staff: Pitons Stargroves was built for seclusion and intimacy and it's a tradition we seek to preserve. The villa has no television, telephone or internet connection. You'll need a cell phone to access the outside world and the staff. But our guests prefer it that way. Some never leave the villa grounds at all during their stay…with its inexhaustible scenery and setting, the villa is a real world unto itself. Enjoy your own scenic swimming pool fed by a small stone waterfall, for a private, refreshing dip just outside your door.
Comfort and privacy are guaranteed by the villa's 24-hour staff of two, Mary and Pious, who are available to clean, arrange sightseeing tours or to be your personal guides on island adventures. Mary, who serves as housekeeper, will be glad to cook for you as well in exchange of a fee. Please note that the guests are also responsible for buying groceries and drinks.
Activities and Notes: While there are no resort services or activities directly around the villa, the Jalousie Plantation Hotel and a superb public beach are only five minutes by car. The award-winning Dasheene Restaurant at the world famous Ladera Resort is also just a short drive away. For hiking enthusiasts, the Gros Piton Nature Trail sits right in the villa's backyard. For travel from the villa, you can arrange for a car rental, or use the services of Ben, our dedicated taxi driver (taxi fares extra).
Please note: This property is not suitable for young children because of the tower in the house and the open stairway to the pool.
Pitons Stargroves Villa is amazing! My family and I were very impressed with every aspect. The big spacious house with a unique design has incredible views, all the modern conveniences and is kept in outstanding condition. It exceeded all of our expectations and created a truly memorable experience.
We found the Stargroves Villa to be a wonderful place to spend our vacation on St Lucia. The house is built onto the side of the hill with an amazing view! The house had everything we needed and is in great shape. The staff made our stay in the villa and on the island an even more pleasurable experience. They were so friendly and helpful in every way.
We went to chill for a week and we got that is spades. We spent three of our days doing yoga, reading, talking. The other days we explored St Lucia in a rented car and ate out every night. Great restaurants in the area, There is wonderful staff that have been connected with this property for many years and you can have them there as little or as much as you want. They stay away while your in the house to afford you privacy and quiet. It is quite different with one side of the house open to the outside, but we found it glorious.
Mary and Pius do all they can to make your stay relaxing and memorable. From the coolness of the pool to the views of the Pitons it was all round tranquility. It was a clean and homely property. Driving was an experience as the roads are often in poor condition but that just adds to the charm and excitement. There are not many attractions on the island, worth experiencing are the Rain Forest Experience where the guides are so knowledgeable. You travel right to the top of the forest in ski chair like gondolas and the walks are magical,. Well worth our 2 week stay.
Our family of five (children 18, 20, 21yo) were stunned with the incredible architecture and resulting views upon arriving at this vacation home. Open-air, three-sided, and beautifully maintained, the home straddles the line between luxury and homey comfort. With daily cloudburst tropical rain and wind we were surprisingly never wet, and enjoyed a morning rainbow every day. With the pitons framing the vista to the Caribbean Sea, my wife and I could finally forget the busyness of New York life.
We took the advantage of hiring the manager, Pius, as our driver for touring and food shopping. Do not pass this up, he is well known throughout the Soufriere region, took us to the fishing marina to buy the morning's catch and he also arranged an impromtu tour of the World's Finest Chocolate cocoa plantation which is less than 1/2 mile away. He also acted as our vacation manager, suggesting which scuba guide, which water taxi, which grocery, which restaurant to use. The home's available cell phone meant he could drop us at the beach, volcano, or restaurant and he was always a phone call away.
His mother, Mary, is the home's cook and in-house concierge. She was present for meals upon request and provided laundry if you ask. Her cocoa tea was fabulous, and the jerk chicken and charcoal-grilled tuna dishes were authentic. The two, mother and son, were a highlight and deserved a generous tip.
Go to Sugar Beach. Climb the Gros Piton. Soak in the black-mud sulfur springs. Tour the botanical gardens. Fly down the zip lines. Sleep with the lulling winds and rest, you will want to return. We will.
Staying at this property was like living in a luxury tree house nestled in a gorgeous rain forest with views of the ocean. They picked us up from the airport, took us shopping for groceries, and dropped us at the rental, it couldn't have been easier to get there. The property has amazing views, is very private, spacious, clean and comfortable. The housekeepers were super friendly and granted our every wish (as did all the locals). Just a short drive down the hill and you're at the most beautiful bay and resort. Having a pool was a big plus for cooling off in the afternoon and I loved the built-in stone showers. The kitchen was stocked with every appliance and tools you could need for cooking, we even cooked a leg of lamb. After dinner we would watch the sunset from the observation platform and wait for the stars to appear, a stunning show every night. So much to do in St. Lucia, we visited the Sulphur Springs and botanical gardens, snorkeled at Anse Chastanet, hiked a rain forest trail, had a gourmet meal at the beautiful Dasheene restaurant at Ladera Resort (built by the same architect as Piton Stargroves we discovered) and took a water taxi to Castries, where we walked around the artists market. It was fun seeing all the cows, goats, tree frogs and bats too. Renting this property was less expensive than staying at an all-inclusive resort and you get it all to yourself. I highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to visit St. Lucia and I plan to stay there again.
