About Andrew and Kaitlin
My husband Andrew and I are happy to host you. We enjoy hikes and camping. Waterfalls and biking. Beachcombing and kayaking. Photography, painting, and laughing are daily recurring events. Andrew loves bird-watching, and Kaitlin loves cooking. The salt water on our skin, the sun rays that warm you and give you a healthy glow, the refreshing cool down afterwards at the waterfall, the birds that sing, the fresh fruits, the goodies from the local organic market, the friendly locals, and the comfort of our home definitely makes us feel like we are in paradise. Every day we still learn new things from the locals. About plants.. which ones are good for you, and which to look out for. Same with the fauna, we get excited whenever we find a new species of insect or animal in our neighborhood. Trying all the local fruits, the ‘Tico’ cuisine, their customs. Their language. The Pura Vida life! And then to share the newfound knowledge and excitement with our guests. Star gazing is another hobby of ours. And the beauty is, all we have to do is pull our chairs out to the lawn and look up. Paired with a glass of wine and a tiki torch makes for a relaxing evening. What makes us happy, is making people happy. We love exploring, and have many more destinations on our travel bucket list. Hikes to Macchu Pichu, The Appalachian Trail, and Santiago de Compostela are on top. But for now we indulge in Costa Rica. The Costa Ballena in particular. And we love it, and love to share it! To help our guests understand our beautiful area that we are in, we have created a booking and info service named Costa Concierge. On our site you’ll find all there is to do, see, and eat in the Costa Ballena. To really feel at home can make memories that stay with you for a long time. We hope you feel at home at our place! We do what we love... and we love what we do!
Andrew and Kaitlin purchased this Villa in 2015
Why Andrew and Kaitlin chose Lagunas de Baru
Sunsets, ocean and mountain views, and 15 acres of jungle paradise! Lagunas de Baru is an exclusive community in Costa Ballena, overlooking Dominical. Just minutes away from a beach known for surfing, dining and nightlife. The beauty of the villa's location is it's elevation, allowing cool breezes and ocean views, without the heat of the lower beach towns. The pleasant town of Dominical is relatively small but offers the beach-lover a wide variety of nearby beaches to choose from. Playa Dominicalito is just south of Dominical and is a great spot for beginner surfers and swimmers. At Punta Dominical, on the southern end of Playa Dominicalito, you'll see the lush green land merge with the rich blue Ocean. It is a great spot to watch the ocean's waves crash onto the rocky shore below and see a near perfect sunset almost year round. Other activities include treks to nearby waterfalls including the Nauyaca Waterfalls (7.5 mi from Dominical on Hwy 243), canopy tours, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, sea kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling. * 4x4 vehicle is necessary to reach the villa

Amazing jungle escape
Our hosts provided very good directions. We were a little surprised initially at the rough road to get to Tres Colinas, but soon realised it was worth it. (Even though we had a 4 x 4 car, which got us up and down the road, I would recommend hiring a jeep). You really feel quite remote and close with jungle nature. The house is very well equipped and comfortable, including very handy extras such as beach towels, washing detergents etc. A good sized pool. We enjoyed spending time on the hammock seats and using the BBQ. We were early to bed every evening, in order to enjoy the early rising wildlife, of which there was plenty on the doorstep. Our hosts recommendations for trips out, including ATV trip, cano island snorkelling and a guide at Hacienda Baru were thoroughly enjoyed. Can definitely recommend this place for a once in a life time jungle experience.
Thank you for your stay Julie. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your stay at Villa Tres Colinas. It truly is a special place, and it was our pleasure to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. Please do come back and see us again. The jungle wildlife and peaceful days will be waiting for you. Until next time.... Pura Vida!
This is a gorgeous property! Very private setting among serene, natural beauty. We saw animals, birds an butterflies at the property every day. The pool was a delight. The house and guest house are comfortable and have everything you will need. The photos do not do this place justice. It was a simply awesome experience to stay here.
The only minor cons are that there is no comfortable seating for watching movies, but we never had time for that anyways. There a couple screens on the house that need repair to reduce bugs. And, there is air conditioning in the master bedroom in the house and also in the guest house, but not in the second and third bedrooms in the house. These are nice bedrooms with nice beds, but these rooms do get hot without the air conditioning. But these are minor details in the big picture as this is truly a stunning property. We highly recommend staying here.
Hola Kathryn, Thank you for your visit and review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed Villa Tres Colinas and the Costa Ballena area. It truly is a special place, and it was our pleasure to share it with you, and help make your stay as comfortable as possible. And thank you for letting us know about those screens, we will have them repaired. Please do come back and see us again. The ocean views, jungle critters, butterflies and birds will be waiting for you!
Until next time.... Pura Vida! :-)
Second visit and it is still a slice of heaven.
Tres Colinas offers privacy and comfort. We were there with 6 people and were very comfortable. The newly added AC is appreciated. There is a sense of tranquility and wonder that comes with the home, and the view is incredible. The kitchen is well stocked and the home lacked for nothing. MIguel, the on site groundskeeper, kept the property in great shape. The vases of flowers in all the rooms made me happy...thanks Kaitlin. WE played daily volleyball matches in the pool. I would highly recommend this property.
Thank you for your stay Anita. We are so happy you decided to come back to visit the Southern Zone, and stay at Tres Colinas a 2nd time! It was wonderful to meet you and your family. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed Villa Tres Colinas again! :-) It really is a special place. And it was our pleasure to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. Please come back and see us again. The tranquil days, and beautiful views will be waiting for you! Until next time... Pura Vida!
I really can't say enough about this place except we are planning a whole month here next year!! We have four kids and the beautiful pool with amazing views was just perfect. The house itself was just what I'd hoped it would be. The Cabana was the perfect place for morning yoga and our homeschooling! So serene and even better views than the house and pool. We had to drag ourselves away to go do things, but the activities in the area are also superb. Andrew and Kaitlin we're wonderfully helpful and booked us all sorts of tours. Having to just send off an email to Andrew and have it all set up for us, made everything simple and was greatly appreciated!!! Pura Vida!! Many thanks Andrew and Kaitlin!
Thank you so much for your stay Kim! It was wonderful to meet you, Todd, and your children. Thank you for taking such great care of the home. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Tres Colinas, and the Costa Ballena area. It was our pleasure to help make it as relaxing and stress free as possible. It really is a wonderful place, and we hope you do come back down for a month to stay with us. But please be aware... if you stay for a full month, you may never leave! :-) But that's not such a bad thing! Ha... Please keep in touch, and let us know when you are ready for the next adventure. Pura Vida will be waiting for you!
Outstanding Ocean View While Surrounded by Nature - Best place to be in the Costa Rica
Last summer my family and I traveled around Costa Rica, staying in seven different places. This was where we stayed the longest (one week) and was hands-down the best. The ocean view is unbelievable, and the setting is totally secluded. We saw the sloth by the pool on three different days, and daily had toucans and parrots in the trees right by the house, and many other birds. We saw the closest neighbor on the road, and he said he often sees monkeys. From the deep wrap-around porch, upstairs or down, day or night, you see only nature - there are no other houses or other development in sight - not even on the view of beach.
The house is very well built and well maintained. You can tell it was built as a home – definitely not built on the cheap to try to make money as a rental. We were there in a heavy storm, and felt completely secure.
Although the house is very secluded, you don’t feel isolated. The closest town, Dominical, is a just a short drive down the mountain. Unlike the east coast, most people here speak English. Although Dominical is a very small town, we never found a reason to go anywhere else. There is a grocery store there with a great selection of everything you need, as well as a great bakery, several restaurants, bars, gift shops, a large beach market, surf board rentals, adventure guide services… even a spa.
The location is near several beautiful beaches. There’s also a great pair of waterfalls just a bit farther up the highway from the house. It’s called Nauyaca Waterfalls. You can hire a service to do a horseback ride to the waterfalls, or just pay a small fee and hike in. The waterfall is spectacular, and there is a good swimming area at the base. There’s a restaurant along the trail (surprising, because you’re on a trail in the middle of jungle) about half-way in. Just another couple of miles up the road is a reptile sanctuary that is also worth a visit. No credit cards accepted there – so bring some cash.
It had been almost 20 years since I’d been to Costa Rica. The infrastructure has developed tremendously in that amount of time. We flew into San Jose, and the highway is great all the way to Dominical. The only unpaved road is the one going up to the house. It’s in good condition – a bit steep in places, but I’ve seen worse public roads in Missouri.
Costa Rica is a lot like Hawaii, with a much shorter and cheaper flight. I recommend going there – and staying here, for either rel axation or adventure – whichever you choose.
Do your self a favor and go!
I can not speak highly enough of the accommodations , views, area and hosts. It is where you are going to want to stay-- I'm sure of it. The area is peaceful and wild yet amenities and social scene are 15 minutes away. Architecture is airy and classy. Hosts are accommodating and knowledgeable of the area. Home is spotless and built with care. Also it's great place to cook . . .pick citrus fruit in season from the orchard on site and enjoy with fresh seseafood and local goods from the farmer's market. We stayed in several places in Costa Rica and none compared to this one. It's a hidden gem. I honestly feel comfortable in saying I'm so sure you'll love it that the long search for just the right place is finally over. You've just found it.
The house is located approximately 10 - 15 minutes up a gravel/dirt mountain road. A 4x4 vehicle is necessary to access this property.
We are very close to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. Only 10min to the famous Nauyaca Waterfalls. Lots of great trails to do jungle hikes. Plenty of whitewater rafting, zip lining, surfing, horseback riding, whale watching, sports fishing, and much more!!
