|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
Terlingua House is located in the heart of the desert mountain country of West Texas. For the price of a nice single hotel room, this unique guesthouse is like having your own personal lodge for your trip. It is a three-bedroom, two-bath, adobe-style property with full kitchen; each located in a separate building. This unique layout enables you to socialize and dine together and retreat to the privacy of your own separate rooms for some solitude. It's almost like renting a small resort rather than just a vacation home or hotel room.
Although most come here to get away from it all, Terlingua House has all the comforts of home:
* Fully stocked kitchen with full sized fridge, stove/oven (apartment sized), microwave, dishwasher and all the dishes, utensils and cooking requirements one would need.
* Washers/dryers - exploring and adventure means you may need to do laundry
* Wireless Internet, cable TV (including big screen TV) - when you want to plug back in to the real world
* An upper level deck for mountain viewing and star gazing
* A beautiful, covered lower courtyard connecting two buildings; complete with 2 grills for cooking and dining outside
* An outdoor sitting area with fire pit (bring your own wood).
Stroll up the hill on the property and view the changing colors of the Chisos Mountains during the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Big Bend Room - Queen and Futon with its own bathroom
Fairfax Room - Queen and two full beds
Studio - Two Full Beds
Fairfax and Studio share a bathroom
We find this property most comfortable for 6 people - 3 bedrooms, 3 couples. We have arranged the bedding so that we can accommodate up to 12 in beds and 16 if you count the futon and day beds in the kitchen. Note that there is a price increase beginning at 7 or more guests age 10 or over.
Value - For two guests this entire property is about the price of a nice hotel room in the city, if you are not on a strictly tight budget, you will be happy you are here. Dining out is expensive in the area, If you make use of the kitchen at all, you will likely find this makes up the difference. For four or more people you will find this is by far the best value in the area. You are on 15 acres, great views, TV, Internet, fire pit, great upstairs deck, city water, direct access to TX 170 highway. You are NOT confined between the tents, trailers or pre-fab "cabins" that have popped up in the years since we began this project. As they say, location is everything - we have a great location, all the amenities and reasonable pricing.
Terlingua House is located two miles west of Terlingua, Texas between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. This safe and secure 15 acre, semi-secluded property with easy access, has a grand view of the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park while still being only minutes away from restaurants and local river rafting, hiking, biking and jeep tour outfitters. Terlingua Ghost town is a couple minutes drive down the road. There's even a pizza place at the bottom of the road - an easy walk for dinner and drinks.
If you like Big Bend I am confident you will like Terlingua House. We strive to keep it cool, fun, functional and clean. After 13+ years we have many repeat customers, many recommendations and about once a year - a whiner! If you have never been to Big Bend, it is truly one of the most unique and fascinating areas in Texas and the country for that matter - hence the national and state parks. It is also one of the most vast and remote areas in the country. It is - an adventure. Whether you stay with us or one of the other lodging accommodations in the area, go with the understanding that you will be, and we are working in, an area that teeters between the 21st century and the 19th century. This is part of the fun, part of the adventure - part of the allure of Big Bend.

Thank you for considering Terlingua House for your Big Bend trip.
Bud Johnson and Friends are the owners of Terlingua House.
Bud lives on a ranch just outside of Bronte, Texas (between San Angelo and Abilene). He is a geologist by trade and also dabbles as an entrepreneur.
Cara or Bud purchased this house in 2003
I fell in love with the area and then the property back in the 80's and it has been a labor of love to get it to the high standard that it is today. There's something almost magical or spiritual when you watch the sunrise and sunset from here - not to mention the star gazing on a clear night. There's nothing like it. Terlingua House is a deluxe property on 15 acres with spectacular views, easy access, all the amenities and plenty of water. Both water and access can be an issue in the area. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and experience an amazing part of Texas that many don't even know exist. It's just minutes from shopping, dining and tour outfitters and easy access for day trips. Plus, you're fully connected to the outside world here with Internet and satellite TV.
Unique, lodge-like adobe style buildings house 3 separate sleeping quarters and kitchen/dining area. It's like renting a lodge or small resort for the same price as a decent hotel room. This allows you to socialize, dine and entertain as a group with the added benefit of retreating to your own space for some quiet time. Just minutes from shopping and dining, it's a perfect place to get away from it all but still be connected with wireless Internet, satellite TV other comforts of home. The sunsets/sunrises and star gazing are spectacular from this property.
We had all we needed, maybe a few more bugs than necessary but we lived with them. First trip to Big Bend Park area and hope to return soon. Watched a family of sheep on bluff above upper deck; 8 hour float trip through Santa Elena canyon WOW!! Big Bend River Tours 1-800-545-4240 James and Andy were great, they know the river, the plants and the wildlife. Hwy 170 Lajitas to Presidio was more beautiful on return(west to east). Had a wonderful lunch at a small dive The Bean in Presidio. All restaurants were small, casual and the food was good. I will make every effort to book Terlingua House for future visits. Lots of linens, beds were comfortable, kitchen was rustic but every thing necessary was there. FYI we never located a hairdryer
We stayed for 4 nights in early June and had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful, all of the beds are very comfortable and the a/c worked great! The views from the house are amazing, sunrise and sunsets as well as a breathtaking view of the night sky! The house was clean, comfortable and perfect for our family. We traveled with 3 kids, grandma, myself and hubby. The location is perfect to hike Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
We stayed for four days in August and had a great time. The house is exactly as described and has lots of room - for us four it was hard to decide where to sleep first :-)
The little town of Terlingua has much more to offer than we first expected - no need to bring a lot of supplies unless you want to save money: the local grocery store is of course a bit more expensive than a big city supermarket.
This is the perfect spot to be close to Big Bend National Park. Nice area to explore. The house is well stocked for all you need to make for a comfortable stay. Unfortunately we had a couple of bad storms that swept through, the first knocked out the power grid in Ft. Stockton which put us in darkness from 7:00PM until 4:00AM in the morning. The second storm came the following day which brought marble sized hail hitting vehicles and windows, freaked us all out worrying about the damage to vehicles but appears we had no damage. Overall the stay was great. The house needs some attention, we couldn't get the main washer in kitchen to work, it cuts on but only goes for 3 minutes and then cuts off. Light bulbs were out in most of the lamps and ceiling fans. If there would have been bulbs available we would have changed them but known were to be found. The place needs candles in the event storms hit the area and knock out power. we used our flashlights we brought from home. The bathroom between bedrooms is completely HOT during our stay and only a fan to keep it cool. We ran out of toilet paper on our last day and had to resort to paper towels. Other than those basic lack of supplies available we did have plenty towels and linens. Kitchen was well equipped and roomy. We enjoyed our stay despite the little obstacles and would stay here again.
Two years ago, in late January, we stayed at Terlingua House to celebrate my 50th birthday. We fell in love with Terlingua House and its rustic charm. We still dream about going back to visit! Terlingua House is perfectly situated for day trips to Terlingua, the Ghost Town, Big Bend National Park, Big Bend State Park, and Lajitas.
The sunrises at Terlingua House are amazing to behold. To sit with a warm cup of coffee and enjoy the beauty of nature in the morning is unforgettable. Then, to close out the day with an amazing sunset is the icing on the cake.
My son and husband climbed the cliff behind the house to check out the caves. They loved it!
Terlingua House is not like being at home. It's truly an adventure! We loved the little keys hanging in the kitchen to access each of the bedrooms, the roof top deck, and the delicious artisan pizza place with live music right next door. The little lounging area in the kitchen was perfect for the kids while we prepared meals and the bedrooms were spread out enough we didn't feel like we were on top of one another while there. Everyone had space to roam and play and explore. We enjoyed evenings by the fire pit, too.
Dreaming of coming back and cannot wait!
We stayed here over Spring Break with my parents and two boys. The house is located in a GREAT place in relation to the parks! One thing to note is that while it sits up on a hill, it is right on the highway. It was probably our misconception, but we thought it would be further off the highway. The house is divided into two areas, one has a bedroom and kitchen/gathering area divided by a courtyard area, the other building has two bedrooms with a bathroom, joined by a courtyard area. You should note that you do not have access to the second bathroom from the bedrooms, you have to walk outside onto the uncovered patio. This is not really a big deal unless it is raining...there is no cover at all. This style of house is very common in the area and we thought it was kind of fun, even though it was not what we had expected at all. For those with kids, you should also know that we did not feel comfortable letting our boys (age 7 and 11) sleep in the third bedroom (2 double beds) by themselves. There are two doors, one of which opens to the shared courtyard and one which leads out to an area with rocky terrain and a pretty steep drop off. We were worried they would wake up in the middle of the night, get confused, use the wrong door and have an accident. We were probably just being overly cautious, but we weren't comfortable with our original plan of letting them have that bedroom to themselves. It was not a problem, we chose to split up, but they could have also slept in the two twin beds in the second bedroom....lots of room! I would not recommend this property for families with small children! it was however great for our boys, they loved exploring the land behind the house. The outdoor patio/ firepit/ picnic table was awesome. We really enjoyed that in the evening after a day of exploring. We all agreed that this is a good property with a lot of potential. A few updates and a really good cleaning could make it GREAT! Things like a leaky toilet which made for a stinky bathroom, posters falling off the walls, pots/pans/kitchen items that weren't "quite" clean, missing blue glass tile out of the pretty window you see in the pictures, dirty blankets in the closets, among other petty things.....these were all little things that did not affect the enjoyment of our stay. If addressed, the property would be even better! Know that when you come to this area and this house, you should expect comfortable, but rustic, not the Ritz! :)
