About Mitch Goldman

My parents bought this property in the early 60's: They were both teachers and had summer vacation free to live in Maine. As a result I vacationed and summered in the area for my whole childhood life. I held jobs in the blueberry business both raking by-hand and on a farm receiving and transfer station. I grew to appreciate the abundant wildlife and natural beauty that this site and the surrounding area had to offer. I learned that Acadia National Park is the only National Park in the North East. By day, if it wasn't blueberry season yet, I swam in the lake, read (you'll have tv and internet), hiked or biked down the dirt road or just generally communed with nature. The Owls, Loons, Toads and Cicadas are a nightly symphony.

Now I bring the kids back to do the same. They love to wander on the dirt road, swim, kayak, play ping pong, and air-hockey, and have the nightly campfire and s'mores. All on a quiet and private 4-acre lake-front site.

Why Mitch Goldman chose Eastbrook

4-acre lake-front site across dirt road from 100's of acres of Blueberry field.

It is a great location with relatively easy access to Ellsworth, Bangor (I-95), Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and The Schoodic Peninsula. Contact the owner if you have any questions.

I can't even begin to say enough about this amazing home. We had the most wonderful weeklong vacation here. The house is beautiful and there was more than enough space for our family of four. The beds were very comfortable, and I haven't slept as well as I did in a while. Our two boys (8 and 11) chose to share the bed in the loft so that they would have easy access to the TV with DVD player. We spent most of our days at Acadia - the hour drive was well worth the amenities that we had in this home. We ate our dinners either on the enclosed porch or, when we were willing to share the space with the bugs, we ventured out onto the deck. There was also a large washer and dryer, which made doing laundry easy and quick.

Saturday was our relaxing day and we spent the day at the house. Between air hockey and basketball tournaments, playing ball and relaxing on the hammock, and kayaking the beautiful lake, it was a fabulous day.The kids loved feeding the ducks in the water. Sitting out in the evenings on the dock with my husband and a bottle of wine, we could totally believe that we were the only people around.

If this house is available on your dates, I wouldn't even bother looking at any other properties. When we come back to Maine, we will DEFINITELY be staying here again!

Great stay!!

This was a fabulous stay, your right on the lake it just doesn't get much better than that. Location from the National park was a bit of a drive, but would stay again in a heartbeat. The house was very comfortable. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Fantastic vacation spot especially for those with kids

  • 4 of 5

True to/better than the pictures. This place was fantastic and more of a home than a traditional "camp".

Because the HomeAway/VRBO app is the absolute worst, we didn't know we needed a code for the key but Mitch was extremely responsive and helpful.

While the house is close to the road, it had barely any traffic the entire week we were there (probably because there seem to only be a few more camps on this side of the lake that are beyond the rental). Because of the lack of rain, the lake is a little shallow off the dock (so definitely no adult jumping in) but it was great for our dog (and would be great for young kids). We used both the grill and the kitchen and they were fine (we do always bring our own knifes so I can't speak to that component). Enough plates and utensils to have my large, local family over for dinner one night (and fantastic to have a dishwasher for cleaning up) but it would have been great to have an adult-sized table on the screened in porch (in case it's not clear in the picture, the table in the screened in porch is kid-sized). The lake itself is quiet with most of the sound coming from ducks (that loved the dock even when our dog was nearby) and loons. We saw only one kayaker and heard one very small motorboat the entire week. There were a couple warm days so we did turn the air on in the bedroom and then it got cold, so we turned on the heat the last night and both worked fine (although we never did figure out the cast iron stove in the living room, the bedroom one was plenty of warmth for both rooms). The shower had good pressure (in the master bathroom, can't speak for the rest of the bathrooms). Even though our weather was pretty much perfect, the ping pong and air hockey were a great treat for my family as we prepared dinner upstairs. Bug zapper didn't seem to actually work (turned on, but moths seemed to be crawling around on the "zapper" part), but we didn't really experience any bugs anyway (many years I come home covered in bites, this year -- just one). Deer head didn't bother the dog at all (in case you have one that tends to get scared and bark at strange objects).

The only thing that might keep us from renting here again is the bed in the master bedroom. I know it's a rental so you have to sort of lower expectations, but a better bed (especially now that those foam ones you get in the mail are so cheap and pretty decent) would have pushed this place into the 5 star category.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for capturing so many great things about Maine Loon House! I love to get feedback from guests so I appreciate your note. I'll have maintenance be sure to check the zapper. It brings to mind some ways to use the house to its best. With both the French doors to the screen porch both open, it is relatively easy to bring dining table onto the screen porch. I know this may not be feasible for all guests, but that is what I often do. Then you have large kitchen counter for food buffet and both kids and adult table on screen porch. When the night is right weather-wise, the house really shines setup like that. The bed is a funny thing. The last review just received said they got the best sleep in a long time. It's all subjective to what someone likes. The Master BR mattress is a bit on the softer side so if you like firm it may not be what you were expecting. Apologies for that and sorry I lost a star. The different bed rooms each have a different style of bed, 4 types in the house in all actually. You can always Goldilocks it :) The mattress and bedding throughout the house are all of good quality. Clean bedding is placed for every guest. Bedding is replaced frequently, every year as necessary, or more frequently for some items. Glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to having you again.

Great location with ample comfort!

  • 5 of 5

The Loon House of Eastbrook was everything we had hoped! The setting is tranquil with a great spot for swimming and use of the kayaks that were provided. Inside, the house is very comfortable and offers amenities and conveniences (we were far from roughing it!) We headed to family friendly activities in Bar Harbor, Ellsworth, Bucksport, and Bangor, and enjoyed the scenic country roads that took us there. We enjoyed several camp fires, a family of ducks, and some blueberries! This house is a great location to enjoy a quiet lake experience after sightseeing Acadia and dining in Bar Harbor. It is obvious that the house and contents are well maintained by individuals who share my love of all things Maine. This added to my pleasure of being there, as I continue a long personal family tradition and share Maine with my little boys. Thanks to the owners for sharing this great home with us.. quite possibly our best trip to Maine ever!

Great vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay! The property had everything you need for a great vacation. Nice, quiet location. 20 minute drive from the nearest town. The kitchen is well stocked with lots of cookware and utensils. Master bathroom is nice with jet tub. Enjoyed screened porch in the evening. Game room is a bonus. Few suggestions I would have- more spacious fridge and new bedding.

Dickens Farm Rd. is marked at the turn-off with a regulation green street sign.

119 Dickens Farm Rd. becomes a dirt road that goes down between two barns. Our driveway is 1/2 mile down the dirt road, on the right.

Eastbrook is close to Ellsworth, Bangor, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Close enough for easy access even during peak times, or you can remain at 'camp' and avoid the crowds altogether. Depending when you go you may not see any other people, around camp and the lake, all week. There is no better location in New England for outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, sailing, beach-combing, and fall foliage viewing.
