About Shawn Smith

I grew up near Detroit and made a temporary move to the Spider Lake/Traverse City area to take some classes at Northwestern Michigan College in the winter of 1991. Upon waking, my second morning in February, I was lying in bed on the second floor looking out the window half asleep. All was white when a black squirrel was spotted down and about thirty feet away bounding across a split rail fence. The fence had about six inches of fresh snow and each time the squirrel would jump it would knock some snow off the fence to the ground. The morning was still except for this black squirrel on a pure white landscape. It was like a living painting. I watched this for about thirty seconds and realized at this moment that this is where I belonged. And, here I am today sharing my good fortune with others looking for that special getaway.

Shawn Smith purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Shawn Smith chose Traverse City

Why this Property? Because you get a cabin at an affordable price, on a very nice piece of property with great views not to far from Traverse City, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries, casinos, small towns, shopping and so much more. Plus, and maybe the most important thing to me is the sandy lake bottom and you can swim right out front!!

There are Beautiful and breathtaking views.

Construction began on this set of three cabins in the late 40s beginning with cabin #2 and continues today. They are all two bedroom, a bit rustic and situated on a 'wow' piece of property on Spider Lake; very much requested. Great for family get-togethers sleeping up to sixteen and offering six bedrooms, three bathrooms, three kitchens, sofabeds and privacy from others because you have your own cabin. Nice touch for the hermit that travels with family or friends but now and then likes that time alone.

I like the change of seasons and the innumerable places to go and visit within a short drive. I will say this, I think the best place is Spider Lake.

We loved this Place

  • 5 of 5

It's like stepping back in time, the cabin we stayed at felt very old school and I think that's why we loved it so.The owner Shawn took the time to sit with us, explain the attractions of Traverse City and all nearby things. He was so professional, helpful and obliging. For the money this place is worth it's weight in gold and then some. My Husband and I plan on coming back every year. Just a great hidden gem. Happy to have found it and stayed there.

Great getaway with family and friends

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay. We rented all 3 cabins with plenty of room for everyone (3 families). The lake was beautiful and fun to kayak and relax. Enjoyed sitting out by the fire pit and spending time with family. Shawn was very hospitable and we hope to be able to go again next year!

Affordable and Unforgettable!!!

  • 4 of 5

Shawn has the perfect space for a family getaway. Plenty of swimming, fishing, and sitting by a campfire. Spider Lake is truly one of Michigan's prettiest inland lakes. We plan on visiting again next summer, and that says a lot since most of my family will be traveling all the way from Texas! Shawn's a great host who is readily available. His cabins and pontoon boats are generously priced. Which promises an affordable but unforgettable experience.

Owner's Response: Crystal: Thanks for the review. It was nice to meet you and the family. I'm glad you like Spider Lake as much as I do and that you plan on coming back next summer. I'll be putting my schedule together in January so if you don't hear from me by then please call or email me so we can get you on the schedule. Hopefully you can have a longer stay; there is so much to do on site and off, even if it is just resting. Thanks again and I look forward to meeting you all again soon, Shawn

My wife and I stayed in the Jergen's cabin and it was fantastic. The lake was perfect. In the morning the water was crystal clear perfect for a hot cup of coffee. In the evening the moonlight lit up the lake and the water looked like glass. Spider lake was wonderful. The cabins are so close to an island (#3) that the locals call party island. There we hung out and got to know the locals and they were awesome. The cabin has everything you need to cook and is close to local produce and grocery stores. Additionally, the lake is close to sleeping bear dunes and Traverse City. I will rent from Shawn again. I hope everyone has the privilege to stay there.

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My four family rented the Buckles Cabin after Labor Day weekend. The lake was still warm and very quiet. We loved the 50's cabin, just the right size, cozy and clean. One of the best spots on the lake for sure with southern exposure and a quick swim or paddle out to a sandy island. We will be back!
