This lovely 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartment, rests an historic Oltrano Florentine building on a quiet side street called Via della Chiesa. About jessica houston

I am an artist and an educator. I teach at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and I exhibit my work nationally and internationally. I studied painting in Florence and then lived there for many years. Mi sento a casa in Italia!

jessica houston purchased this apartment in 2001

Why jessica houston chose Historic Center

I am an artist and I studied painting in Florence. It is my home away from home after having lived there for many years. Santo Spirito is my favorite neighborhood in Florence. I love how authentic it is--buying veggies in the local market after popping in to see Masaccio's frescoes at the Brancacci Chapel. Heaven!!

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment has a lovely cross breeze, and you can hear the sounds of the church bells throughout. The sense of spaciousness and light is refreshing. The benefit of renovating an apartment in Italy is that you can choose from the best materials while maintaining the original features. I love the typical wood-beamed ceiling and the terracotta floors. The neighborhood is truly wonderful. Piazza Santo Spirito is steps away, and the artisian shops, cafes, and restaurants are beyond charming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I had a wonderful three plus months in Florence living in a building from about 1300, believe it or not. The flat had all the charm of the past but with modern conveniences like a modern full stocked kitchen and two bathrooms, one with a large tub. The bedrooms in the back of the flat were very quiet which made for peaceful sleeping and the views were the enchanting orange stucco roofs so typical of Tuscany. Everyday a block away, Piazza Santo Spirito had a daily market of fresh veggies and either clothes, antiques, or many other different offerings. The piazza provides many cafes and restaurants where both the locales and tourists enjoy a cappuccino, gelato or a meal. It is a festive, vibrant area that gave me a genuine feel for the Italian way of life, quite different from the often hectic American schedule. I got in shape too by walking up to the third floor to the flat and frequenting Piazza Michaelangelo climbing its many steps. A quick walk to Ponte Vecchio or Ponte Trinita which are both close, brings one to the majestic Duomo within a matter of minutes.

Thank you for this wonderful experience. The only thing I missed from home was my bed!

Sunny Santo Spirito

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was inviting and renovated in a style that retained the historical feel of the building while offering contemporary spaces to enjoy. I loved the large windows to open for the afternoon breeze and the sound of church bells. The Santo Spirito square was a fun place to have morning coffee and watch the market set up or relax in the evening with dinner and the sound of musicians and children playing in the fountain. It was a great neighborhood to explore and so easy to walk to all the places we wanted to see. The four flights of stairs can be a bit tiring but was worth the exercise!

a great place in HIstoric Oltrano

  • 5 of 5

a really great flat in a great neighbourhood. the apartment is an easy place to live with good amenities (2 bathrooms!) open kitchen living area and close to the daily food market in Santo Spirito. the area is fantastic with great bars and restaurants, artisan studios and significant monasteries and churches all just steps away. the only concern for some might be the bar and restaurant on the corner half a block away. The streets fill up with people mingling late into the night, more so on weekends. the atmosphere is generally relaxed but the noise travels easily within these small streets. luckily the bedrooms are at the back of the apartment and they are quiet and comfy. it's all part of the lively neighbourhood which is one of the best in Florence and a real treasure to spend time in. the people and activity are part of the attraction of living in a real Florentine community.

A Dream Apartment in a Dream City

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I spent a beautiful, romantic week here. The apartment is an authentic Florentine treasure, in one of the city's most beautiful neighborhoods. Piazza Santo Spirito is a block away, one of the few (if not the only) tree-lined piazzas in the city; the impression one gets is of gray and green and gold, from the light of the buildings, the trees and the gorgeous yellow facade of the Church of Santo Spirito. There are excellent restaurants and cafes in the piazza, and the stunning Church of San Carmine is nearby, with it's glowing frescoes. The apartment itself is well appointed and tastefully furnished, in harmony with the spirit and feel of the city. The living room windows open onto Via della Chiesa, a lively but not a noisy street; the bedrooms are in the back of the apartment and face quiet courtyards. Sleeping there was a deep pleasure! The kitchen is well equipped and wonderful to cook in. All the rooms are spacious, sunny, and airy. The bathrooms are well done too; the one connected to the master bedroom is quite beautiful, blue & white tiled. The place was spotless! There is good shopping nearby, Italian style, little shops with beautiful wine, cheese, fruits and vegetables, etc. The owners also provided an excellent list of restaurants and attractions; every recommendation was spot on. This part of Florence, the Oltrarno, is quieter and greener than the rest of Florence; the stunning Boboli Gardens are there, the amazing museum at Palazzo Pitti, the beautiful church of San Miniato, from which you get a view overlooking the city that you will never forget. We were very happy here & it was difficult to leave, & I would recommend this property most highly.

Two artist friends stay in December, 2011

  • 4 of 5

My friend and I were quite satisfied with our stay in the apartment. The location was excellent and the apartment was well equipped and comfortable. Each morning we would go out into various parts of the city, exploring the neighborhoods and visiting the many wonderful churches and museums Florence has to offer. By the end of each day we were tired but exhilarated, and looked forward to a home cooked meal in the convenient kitchen, and an evening reflecting on our encounters in the city. The beds were quite comfortable and it was a treat to have 2 bathrooms. The washing machine was essential for helping us travel lightly, and much appreciated. There were only two small aspects that were less than desireable about our stay. From the first day we noticed a stale smell in the apartment, and each day on entering the apartment we would remark on it again. After being in there for only a minute it no longer was a factor. The other problem was that neither one of us realized this apartment was at the end of such a long climb of stairs! We managed just fine, but after being out pounding the stone streets, our tired legs would protest on that last leg of our way "home."

The characteristics of this apartment which made it special, were the furnishings, the numerous books to peruse and the lovely art on the walls. The inclusion of a wireless connection was also much appreciated. The listing of nearby restaurants and shops was convenient. We shopped for our groceries in the neighborhood with great delight, and always enjoyed coming home to Piazza Santo Spirito.

Holiday Vacation on Florence

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this apartment was absolutely the best. We found everything to be perfect for five of us for a 12 day vacation in Florence over the recent holidays. The location is in a quiet neighborhood two blocks from the Piazza Santo Spirito. All that we could ever want was within a few block walking distance including, atm, bakery, with the best contucci and pane, grocery markets, many of the best restaurants we went to were within two or three blocks, fresh fruits and vegetables in the piazza and some of the best shopping we found during our vacation. No problem finding the apartment, taxi drivers knew immediately where and how to get there, which amazing with all the one way streets in Florence. The local contact person Rosemary stayed in constant contact with us, from a few weeks before we arrived and being at the apartment when we arrived to welcome us and show us all the details and operation of the appliances, heat, and provide us with details of the neighborhood. She made sure we know how to reach her if we needed anything at all. The location of this apartment is the best. All of Florence is within easy walking distance. The Mercato Centrale and train station are a 15 minute walk. And everyone walks in Florence. The apartment building was quiet, we briefly saw a few of the other residents and everyone was extremely friendly. The apartment was exactly as described in the listing and photos. It was very clean and well maintained. We would without question stay here and would highly recommend this apartment to our friends and family.

Oltrarno Delight

  • 5 of 5

We always wanted to experience the non-touristy side of Florence--and the Chiesa Apartment was perfect. Large, airy, with high ceilings and lots of windows, it's a deliglht and very large compared to most apartments in the city. The kitchen and baths are modern and the layout worked well for two couples. We had a great dinner at the 4 Leoni nearby, and enjoyed our morning coffee and many gelatos at Cafe Bianchi on the Piazza Santo Spirito. We also enjoyed the little library of books about art, italy and restaurants. You can walk everywhere, and taking the bus (there is a bus map in the apt) is easy and convenient. Karin, who met us with the keys and took care of all our needs, is terrific. Ciao!
