The Turtle house was an amazing place for the purpose of our trip! I had the privilege of guiding 10 teacher candidates to work on the Waianae Schools for the month of January. The house could not have been a more perfect location for our needs. Rita and Bob were the consummate hosts, Heidi responded to our every email and request and worked with us on our billing and Debi was simply incredible and welcoming upon our arrival, all of them providing us with the Aloha Spirit!
During our month of service and learning, we had the opportunity to get to know our neighbors, the community and the surrounding area. We even danced a little to a luau (wedding) happing two doors down, and were even invited to join them! We never once felt unsafe, and marveled at the beautiful surroundings! Hey, what college student wouldn’t want a classroom setting to be in Hawaii’s beautiful surroundings! We made it a point to become a part of the community, and not just a visitor!
We ventured out to various points on the island, and always looked forward to our rest time at the house. How could you not with countless numbers of whales breaching daily, turtles swimming outside the back lawn, and of course the Turtle Bar to play music and unwind after a long day in the schools! We hope to make this our home away from home for many years to come, as we strengthen our relationship with the Waianae Schools and help the district to grow local teachers who will return to the community to teach for a lifetime!
Aloha and Mahalo!
The Turtle House is quite the place! I’d like to acknowledge Rita, Heidi and Debi–they were wonderful to work with! Our group of 11 didn’t want the typical tourist experience and this house delivered on that. Located north of the Ko Olina resorts, Waianae is a mix of vacation rentals and local’s homes. While not all homes are as high-end as the Turtle House, we felt very safe and people were friendly and welcoming. There are plenty of good places to eat within a short drive. We really enjoyed Kahumana Organic Farm & Café.
The real star of the home is the outdoor living space. We spent a lot of time playing cards under the lanai and enjoying the bar and deck area (5/5 stars). The house was well stocked with everything you need, including boogie boards and snorkeling equipment.
We did experience one slight hiccup with the house. The electricity for two bedrooms stopped working. Debi, stopped right over and was able to get it back on, but it went out again and was still not fixed when we departed. It can be difficult to get services to drive out promptly and the issue has since been rectified and shouldn’t be an issue for future guests. Still, it was an inconvenience for those staying it these rooms.
As a previous reviewer indicated, the house has no A/C. With temps around 90 and the expected high humidity, it was quite uncomfortable to sleep some nights. It's been one of their hottest summers on record, so it may not be a factor for future guests. We’d suggest a simple, low cost attic fan to help cool the house quickly when you return in the evenings from dinner. With no bugs, we did find it convenient to open the doors, which created a nice breeze in the living area.
After trying out a few of the beaches in the area, we found a tranquil beach just a few minutes south of the home. Pokai Bay Beach has a protective break and it was calm and perfect for everyone. We rented paddle boards and one in our group surfed at the adjoining Army Beach. Great snorkeling as well. Just a perfect area. We also loved to visit the turtles a short block away at Kidd Beach. In the morning, we often saw dolphins and seals from the back deck.
Overall, we had such a great time and appreciated having a beautiful home where we could gather as a group rather than in separate rooms at a hotel or resort. We sure made use of the unbelievable outdoor area. Based on the electrical issue and no A/C, our group rated the home 4 out of 5 stars – which we consider above average. Mahalo!
My wife and I married at the Turtle house on August 28, 2014. We were so excited to find such a beautiful home, located next to the water, that was willing to accommodate our ceremony and reception. We only had 16 total guests, along with help from the catering team and photographers who flew in from South Korea. Everyone who set foot in the house was super impressed with its beauty, location, views, and overall great feel. We had a painless check-in experience with the wonderful Debi. She was always available to answer any questions, and helped us during our wedding day. The location is further up the west coast of Oahu, but it's not a problem at all. You'll feel so relaxed that you'll be glad you're not around the busy Waikiki. If you do need larger stores or a supermarket, they are located close in Kapolei, just about 25 minutes away. We truly had an incredible time at this house, and we hope that we can return soon! Thank you again to Debi, Rita, and Heidi for all of their help. It was a dream come true to get married in such a beautiful location.
Matt and I had our wedding at the Turtle House on August 9th 2014. I think we made history by successfully executing the wedding of our dreams in between 2 potential hurricanes which I must stress is not a normal occurrence!! But thank goodness our lucky stars and rainbows brought us beautiful Hawaiian weather for the Big Day and nothing but happy memories!! Due to the excellent location on the Westside of the island we had beautiful weather our entire stay and barely even noticed the storm pass through. Booking the home for our 4 night stay and for the wedding was a breeze with the help of Rita, Debi and Heidi. They kept excellent correspondence with us throughout the entire process. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. Rita was flexible and understanding and assisted my family with kindness knowing that we were a little nervous & flustered about the hurricane warnings and helped us to make sure everything went smoothly for our guests. We had about 50 friends and family members attend and the backyard was more then large enough to accommodate this number. Our wedding was beautiful and the Turtle House was just our style for a picturesque yet laid back ceremony/reception. The Turtle Bar was a popular spot during the reception and all of our vendors including DJ, bartenders, sushi bar, caterers, photographers and videographers were very impressed with the venue as well. For anyone looking for additional pictures of the Turtle House as a wedding venue I would be glad to share. Everything was mostly DIY but you don't require much with such a beautiful ocean backdrop! We had several turtle, ray and seal sightings and the full moon against the crashing waves at night was spectacular! Again, we thank Rita and Debi for their hospitality during our stay. We now know the meaning of true Aloha spirit and look forward to many more visits!
My husband and I decided that we wanted to renew our vows in Hawai'i and thought a beach house would be an ideal venue to not only have it but also to spend time with friends and family.
After SCOURING vrbo, I came across the Turtle House in Waianae. The pictures were beautiful ! This was actually my FIRST time on vrbo and I was a bit hesitant because I know pictures may not represent how the property currently looks like but the reviews were so positive that I decided to take a chance. And boy, am I glad I did !
From beginning to end both Rita and Heidi (admin assistant/property manager) were very easy to work with, and they were always prompt in responding to my emails. Debi, who was our hostess for the turtle house was an absolute sweetheart and made us feel completely at home.
First off, the pictures on vrbo are very accurate ! Its exactly as what you see if not better ! I love that we had our own private gated driveway. It made parking very easy and also made us feel safe, not to mention that they also have an alarm for the house. I am VERY picky about the cleanliness of rentals/hotel rooms and I'm happy to say that upon arriving, the turtle house was spotless. The kitchen is well stocked with all the necessities needed, pots, pans, cups etc. I was very happy to see they also had a rice cooker ! (Yay ! ) They also have a washer and dryer to use. The view that the turtle house has from the backyard is absolutely BREATHTAKING !!!! Pictures do not do this view justice. Every morning, and throughout the day the family and I sat outside and ate , enjoying the view and just soaking in all that the turtle house had to offer.
The day of our vow renewals could not be any perfect. There was only a small group of us (25 ppl ) and there was more than enough room for everyone. The tiki bar was GREAT to have. It made serving beverages a lot easier, they have a large Ice cooler inside as well as a small music system where you could plug your ipod into. And the backdrop to our ceremony ( which faced the ocean view ) was just AMAZING !
Just as a heads up, the turtle house does not have central AC, and it can get pretty hot. There are fans in many of the rooms which help alleviate the heat. In all honesty, it didn't bother us as much. Also there are very few places to eat in the area, only fast food spots like taco bell , etc. You'll need to drive about 20 min to get to a Costco or Target.
Thank you for having us ! Our time in Hawai'i couldn't be any more perfect
Our extended family had a wonderful week in west Oahu. The best feature of this property is the amazing huge backyard with views, sunsets & crashing waves. Our concerns began as we approached the neighborhood...a combo of nice but some run down houses with bars on windows & fenced dogs in yards. We were greeted by Debi who didn't have the Aloha Spirit we would have expected & asked her if crime was a problem here. Her answer was "There is crime everywhere".We also were made uncomfortable when we were asked to fill out a report with all damages found in the house so we wouldn't be held responsible. This was very STRESSFUL & felt like we had to be on an egg hunt to find damages. We have communicated this to the owners and they have assured us that they have made changes. We used the alarm & were diligent to spend the 10 min to close & lock all the windows of the house & gate. This is annoying to do even if you leave for a short while. The Turtle Bar in backyard has shutters that open with a crank. Opening & closing is not easy & if you decide to use the bar, you will not want to close every time you go down to the beach. The owners said they just had it serviced but it is still difficult. Fortunately, we did a sweep of the backyard when we left to move iPads, laptops, speakers. We had NO idea that the backyard would be a target of thieves. Evidently the contract tells to lock the turtle bar EVERY time you leave. There was a very old school music system in corner of bar. Our group ignored it as we had our music. We got a phone call as we drove to airport from Debi asking if we had moved stereo system. Apparently, locals were in the yard looking for valuables & all they could find was an outdated music system. The owners feel that it's your responsibility if anything is taken at the house even if you take precautions & will charge you for it. We wouldn't recommend you stay here despite its wonderful yard. We found many items that aren't maintained/broken ice maker, ice trays, toaster, old towels & bedding etc.The $127 replaced a $47 stereo, gas to buy it & light bar. Owners need to secure yard to keep locals from walking up low lava wall. They assured us they have not had any recent thefts but told us they remove hose handles to prevent people coming into yard to use water. New stereo will now be a target unless you do a total lock down. This is a nice property with wonderful view but we felt we needed to share what happened to us.
This home is a great location for your wedding, reception or other special event. Please ask about our wedding/event rates.
The home is also located near Paradise Cove, the best luau on the island and near outlet shopping and the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Ted Robinson at KoOlina.
