Perfect base camp in Bass Harbor

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay at the Ebb Tide with our pooch was as perfect as the first. Such a perfect location on the water in Bass Harbor. The house is wonderful with awesome views of the sunset from the house, patio with a fire ring, or chairs down at the water. It was so nice to have a quiet place to come back too and unwind after a day of exploring the wonderful hiking trails that Acadia National Park offers. Shelly maintains beautiful gardens around the house and has several bird feeders that attract lots of birds.

The house is equipped with everything you need to make your stay enjoyable and if you do need something Shelly and Larry are eager to assist. We used the gas grill for half our meals, and enjoyed several local establishments in Southwest Harbor the other nights. Highly recommend "Eat a Pita" and the attached "Island Bar" for an awesome meal.

Thurston's Lobster Pound is a 10 minute drive or use the canoe that comes with the house and paddle across the harbor and tie up at their dock to earn those steamers and beer! Many evenings we took a drive along the Seawall with walks at Wonderland Trail, Ship Harbor Nature Trail, and the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. We saw lots of deer each night we did this.

The shower includes a floor to ceiling window that looks out onto the harbor - how many times do you get to enjoy a wonderful sunset while showering! There is a sun room off the master bedroom with a day bed that our pooch enjoyed - he could watch all the critters and keep us safe :) The house is very bright with lots of windows, but also in a very private setting.

The hiking on Acadia is very similar to the terrain in the White Mountains of NH, just shorter peaks but with views of the ocean. Even though there were 2 or 3 cruise ships in Bar Harbor most days, we met very few people on the trails and had many summits to ourselves. Very enjoyable hiking!

For dog lovers - dogs are welcome on most trails, but there is also an off leash dog park over by Seal Harbor where dogs and horses are welcome, but no bikes. It has a 5 mile loop along with other trails and a pond for the pooches to go swimming. Very worth checking it out.

We highly recommend a stay at Ebb Tide - already planning a return trip next year.

a perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful rental property. Quiet side of the island, beautiful views, abundant wildlife and gorgeous plantings. Very welcoming owners. Great place for a couple wanting to spread out and enjoy some adult/quiet time, not recommended for a family, as there is only the one bedroom. My wife and I are moderately active, so while we spent a lot of time on trails or in kayaks, it was always nice to come home and relax into beautiful views and a tranquil private setting. I really can't overstate how important that is to us, vs. a resort setting or a rental with no view. This property delivers that sense of being somewhere unique every minute of the vacation, vs. just during the "highlight" activities.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay at Ebb Tide for 5 days after a very hectic trip to Canada. It was the perfect place to wind down. Close enough to Acadia National Park for lots of beautiful sight seeing, hiking and exploring, yet remote and secluded enough for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful coast of Maine. There also were several good restaurants very close by serving very fresh and delicious local seafood and other great choices.

Watching the tide come and go, and the sunrises and sunsets from inside or out was incredibly beautiful. The house and surrounding gardens were lovely and inviting. The owners, Shelley and Larry, were great! They couldn't have been more helpful and responsive to any of our questions or needs. We highly recommend this beautiful home for a perfect getaway .

Ebb Tide is Perfect, Quiet Get Away

  • 5 of 5

We needed a quiet, relaxing get away from our busy schedules and city life. Ebb Tide was the perfect and serene vacation rental. The location is perfect for cooking, reading, and viewing the water from the adirondack chairs. The pictures don't do it justice.

We were able to bring our dog, Riley, and the rental was extremely dog friendly. He loved the water!

The owners were extremely friendly and helpful whenever we needed anything- from Benadryl for my bee sting to suggestions for hiking.

We had the best vacation possible and highly recommend this vacation rental!

A slice of heaven on earth

Highly recommend. Shelly and Larry were great hosts. The house was well maintained and cared for. Lots of light and great views in house. Kitchen had everything a cook would need...and house had every amenity that you could need.

Great time at Shelley's vacation home.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week at Shelley's vacation home. We had a wonderful time. The home is very clean, nicely decorated, comfortable, secluded and there were lots of flowers outside. We enjoyed staying on the quite side of the island, it was nice to come home to tranquility after doing the park loop. Shelley was close by and very helpful if we had questions, but gave us complete privacy.

A couple points of interest that are close by, we ate 3 times at Thurston's Lobster Pound across the harbor, the locals tell us this is the best place to eat lobster. My wife and I brought kayaks and we put in at Pretty Marsh (Bartlet' Landing). The water was calm as it is protected by Bartlet's Island. While kayaking we saw dolphins, seals and a bald eagle. This landing is interesting at low tide since there are starfish everywhere.

If you are going to Acadia National Park, I recommend staying at Shelley's vacation home.
