Growing up on the Gulf Coast and marrying my college sweetheart from NC where we reside this part of the Lowcountry has always sang to my soul and provided an idyllic retreat from the rest of the world. We come to escape the fast paced life and know you will too as you enjoy your stay as much as we do.
Cummins purchased this cottage in 2005
Beautiful, peaceful and not over developed. An island unto its own. Without cars and fast food chains you decompress from the point you get on the boat headed to Daufuskie and achieve an ever deeper point of relaxation with each day on the Island. Our beach looks back to Hilton Head's Harbour Town to the North and across the sound to Tybee Island in Georgia as Daufuskie is the last barrier island in SC.
The tranquil boat ride from either Hilton Head or Savannah makes one forget the stress of our hustle and bustle world. You will see Dolphins, Pelicans, Ospreys and a myriad of other flora and fauna along the rivers that most Lowcountry tourists never get the opportunity to experience. Come, relax, and stay a few days or for a while; our retreat is yours.
We just returned from a week's stay in this lovely cottage, and can't wait to go back. Cummins provided ample information about the island, especially logistics on how to get to and from the island. We found the cottage spotless, charmingly decorated, and well-stocked with beach chairs and toys, dishes and cookware, linens, and essential items. Water pressure is great. There was a family in the unit next door, and we never heard a peep. Cummins provided her number and we texted back and forth when we had questions; she was very responsive. It is a very comfortable space for a family to relax in; we ate breakfast on the screened porch and watched the birds and lizards and frogs, and we ate dinner and played games inside on the dining room table.
If you're new to staying on the island, make sure you bring enough groceries/fresh foods to last you the week. It makes for a bulky and awkward arrival by boat, but you won't be able to find it on the island. We stayed a week and also brought extra paper goods, TP, coffee, laundry detergent, shampoo, etc. We rented a couple of golf carts at Bloody Point; it was far too hot to bike, but there were a couple under the house available to us if we chose. The cottage location is terrific. The water's edge is just a couple of minutes' walk. We swam with shrimp, rescued some loggerheads, found sand dollars and hermit crabs, saw a couple of dolphins and some shooting stars, all from the beach in front of the house. There's a hose on the house between the two front porches to wash off sand. On the days we went to the pool, we found it a short quarter-mile walk to the playground and beach club.
We ate in each of the restaurants and found them all delightfully different. Bloody Point and the Beach Club were clubby upscale, and Marshside Mama's and the Old Daufuskie Crab Company more rustic. Of all, we enjoyed the food best at Marshside Mama's and the sunset view (and the scrap iron!) at the Crab Company.
The only (tiny!) difficulties we faced were with the AC and the porch lights. It was tricky to get the temperature sorted in the green bed/bathroom, which stayed much chillier than the rest of the house. For folks sleeping in there, bring some socks or a light coverup and grab the extra blanket. The porch light kicked on at dusk and disturbed our sleep in the green bedroom. We had to climb up and loosen the bulbs to turn them off. (Only, do better than we did and put them back to rights again when you leave!)
This was one of the best vacations we have gone on in a long time due to the relaxation mind set that Daufuskie has every day! The Owners were extremely helpful and friendly. The accommodations were exceptional. And the location was perfect. We could not have asked for a better time!!!
The cottage is lovely, well maintained and had everything to be our home away from home for the week. It's a very short walk from the Melrose pool and restaurant, the beach is across the street and marsh behind it. The owner was very helpful with information to plan logistics, which was extremely helpful since we flew in from Texas. Our visit was the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we've had in a long time!
This house was exactly what we wanted. The location was across the street from the beach and a few hundred feet from the pool/clubhouse. It was well maintained, clean, and had plenty of room for my wife and I, our two small children and my parents. Although it was duplex style, we couldn't hear our neighbors or any activity outside. The owners provided us information to include helpful tips before our arrival and were available to answer any questions we had. We enjoyed our unique island adventure and would definitely stay in this house again. Thank you!
We had a wonderful time on Daufuskie Island. The beaches on the island are beautiful. The cottage was comfortable and clean and only a short walk to the ocean. You can tell the owners take good care of the cottage and we felt at home there. I especially enjoyed the back porch facing the golf course and marsh. The grounds at Melrose on the Beach are amazing. Lots of birds and even a few alligators that are great fun to watch from a distance :) The beach was never crowded and we even had it all to ourselves a few times which was a treat. The kids said it was there favorite beach trip ever. At low tide they explored the sand bar and found hermit crabs, star fish, and even a shrimp. The Beach Club restaurant serves an excellent dinner and while the pool was not open for swimming it was a nice one. We would definitely go back again!
We truly enjoyed our stay. This island is not as developed as some others that we have visited and that was part of it's charm. The house was clean and in great shape upon our arrival. Short walk to the one of the beaches and about one block to the Melrose Beach Club which provided a great pool and food service. Owner's were helpful to provide data in advance about a private boat service to get us on and off the island on our schedule, golf cart options (absolutely necessary), and information on the few restaurants that are available. It was a good place for our family to slow down and spend time together, read books, and reconnect.
