'Magical'. 'Absolutely Breathtaking.' 'This is THE place to stay in Abiquiu.' 'A truly special place.' - Guest Comments.

Imagine an enclave of a storybook casita set among the dreamy landscape in the Land of Enchantment. That’s The Casita del Lago - a haven of luxury and privacy that embraces the architecture and design of New Mexico and the southwest. It’s a southwestern paradise on 22 Abiquiu Lakefront acres in The Land of Enchantment. The Casita is exquisitely designed space that celebrates the beauty unfolding outside with expansive windows, verandas and patios, creating myriad spots to experience paradise uninterrupted. Ultimate privacy in a luxury custom home.

We know that where you choose to stay is a defining part of your journey. At The Casita del Lago, we strive to make our guests feel as though they've come home. So welcome home - and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime.

Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has views, ammenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

The Casita del Lago is a modern house on its own 22 acres. You will have total privacy in your remote, luxurious vacation home. As your hosts, we will leave you undisturbed unless you have questions or need help....if you do, we will respond immediately.

Our daily price includes all fees and taxes (with the exception of the $125 cleaning fee and additional lodging fee if your party has more than 4 members), free WIFI, free cable TV, charcoal and firewood. See the Rates section of this site for more information. You may also visit our website to view all policies - including cancellation policies, hot tub use, etc.

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting a home on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

You may use the 'Book it Now' button to reserve using e-check (preferred) or credit card ... or you may mail us a check.

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

About Carolyn Calfee

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience.

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this place found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

360 degree panoramic views of paradise! Luxury adobe Casita on the shores of Abiquiu Lake - it is a house and property like no other. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

Perfect Spot for Artists

  • 5 of 5

Three of my friends and I spent a week at the casita painting scenes of the surrounding landscape. This is the perfect spot for artists looking for a secluded get-away with spectacular views.

The home is situated on the side of a hill with views of Abiquiu Lake and the mountains in the background. At night you can see the distant lights of Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe created some of her most famous paintings. Walking up the hill behind the home you can a stunning view of Pedernal mesa, another favorite O'Keeffe subject.

The casita has all the modern conveniences including free internet access and a hot tub. We enjoyed soaking in the tub under the starry sky every night after a day of painting.

During our stay, we painted at a variety of locations including Ghost Ranch, the White Place and El Santuario de Chimayo historic site. We also enjoyed a tour of O'Keeffe's home in Abiquiu. There aren't a lot of restaurants close by but the food at the Abiquiu Inn was excellent. We also had lunch at Ghost Ranch. They have a nice buffet for a reasonable price.

The casita owners were very prompt in answering our questions and made us feel welcome.

We were thrilled with the home and very much enjoyed our time there.

We loved having you stay with us and welcome you back anytime. Thank you for choosing our home for your art vacation - we truly appreciate it. Best, Carolyn

A must see beautiful home & setting!

  • 5 of 5

It's a rare thing when you experience the joy of exceeding your hopes for a fabulous vacation. We drove 4,000 miles round trip with two adult sons in wheelchairs on a bucket list trip to experience the beauty of the Southwest. We were not disappointed! The owner was wonderful from the start with frequent communication and accommodation. The house and surroundings are magnificent. The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking. The solitude is serene. I can't recommend this listing more highly.

Beautiful Casita...Stunning Scenery!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casita del Lago!! The Casita and surrounding area were well described on the website. The scenery is beyond incredible. The large windows in the great room captured 180 degrees of “beautifulness” and upon stepping outside, you were surrounded by 360 degrees of gorgeous multicolored mountains/mesas . We saw double rainbows on several occasions! We have stayed in many VRBO homes over the years; and the owners of this Casita far surpassed our past experiences in terms of the quality & quantity of information provided. They were also very timely in responding to our questions which was so helpful in preparing for our stay. We would highly recommend going on the special tour of the Georgia O’Keeffe home & studio in Abiquiu, as well as taking a narrow gauge railroad day trip from Chama - be sure and splurge to ride in the Parlor Car! We have already recommended the Casita to friends. Thank you for a wonderful vacation!

Amazing vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I can't thank you enough for sharing your beautiful home and property. This is the perfect destination for a relaxing, secluded getaway. We loved exploring the property and hiking the arroyos down to the lake. So many interesting rock formations and things to see. We would have been perfectly content just spending all of our time at the Casita but there are so many interesting attractions and things to do in the Abiquiu area. We planned our activities and outings for each morning through afternoon - Ghost Rhanch, Echo Amphitheater, monastery in the desert, Ra Paulette cave tour. We'd return home each afternoon to relaxing rain showers. So many things to do and see we will definitely have to come back!

The instructions on how to get to the Casita from the highway were easy to follow - we had no problems at all. The road in was fine - was a relaxing drive in and out. The house itself is beautiful and very high end. We especially enjoyed the floor to ceiling windows in the main room. The master bedroom was perfect and very comfortable. All the amenities you could possibly need are there - which was very nice. We ran to town and stopped at Bode's for few extra supplies.

Would love to come back and stay again! Thank you again for sharing your beautiful home!

Owner's Response: Tabor - thank you so much for your kind review! I'm so glad you loved the home. We work hard to make sure it has all the amenities you will need. Yes, the views are just unbelievable and we built the floor-to-ceiling windows to frame our favorite views. We never get tired of the views! We especially love the many humming birds out this year! We do hope you will return again to visit - you are always welcome! Best, Carolyn

A stunning get away with remarkable beauty and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We felt like we stepped into another life at this location. The accommodations were absolutely classy, well maintained, comfortable, and felt like home away from home. The solitude and remote location is the perfect getaway from the city. The sunsets are remarkable, the stars were clear from light pollution, and the privacy was appreciated. We had everything we needed, the home was clean, well maintained and previous guests respected this property that has been shared. Our children and us both appreciated the easy hiking on the property and access to the refreshing lake. If you are not using a boat, bring a raft or noodle if you want to enjoy the water during the warm months. Thank you for sharing this property, we would love to return!
