CREATE YOUR PERFECT DAY. EVERY DAY!

Imagine an enclave of a storybook casita set among the dreamy landscape in the Land of Enchantment. That’s The Casita del Lago - a haven of luxury and privacy that embraces the architecture and design of New Mexico and the southwest. It’s a southwestern paradise on 22 Abiquiu Lakefront acres in The Land of Enchantment. The Casita is exquisitely designed space that celebrates the beauty unfolding outside with expansive windows, verandas and patios, creating myriad spots to experience paradise uninterrupted. Ultimate privacy in a luxury custom home.

THE CASITA

We know that where you choose to stay is a defining part of your journey. At The Casita del Lago, we strive to make our guests feel as though they've come home. So welcome home - and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime.

Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has views, ammenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

The Casita del Lago is a modern house on its own 22 acres. You will have total privacy in your remote, luxurious vacation home. As your hosts, we will leave you undisturbed unless you have questions or need help....if you do, we will respond immediately.

RATES

Our daily price includes all fees and taxes (with the exception of the $125 cleaning fee and additional lodging fee if your party has more than 4 members), free WIFI, free cable TV, charcoal and firewood. See the Rates section of this site for more information. You may also visit our website to view all policies - including cancellation policies, hot tub use, etc.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - ON ABIQUIU LAKE!

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting a home on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

RESERVATIONS

MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE HOME

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

About Carolyn Calfee

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience.

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this place found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

360 degree panoramic views of paradise! Luxury adobe Casita on the shores of Abiquiu Lake - it is a house and property like no other. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

Beautiful Oasis

  • 5 of 5

This property is extraordinary. The home is comfortable, clean, and has everything needed. It is quiet and remote but has all the creature comforts at your disposal. The wifi worked well, all appliances are high quality and in great working order. There is ample privacy as the bedrooms are separated. It was very easy to live there.

The views are beyond spectacular. The land around the home is teaming with nature. We saw elk, groundhogs, rabbits, lizards, etc. We fished and swam in the lake. We took walks around the area and felt very safe. It is a short hike to the lake that is hilly, but not difficult. We brought our telescope and star gazed every night. We were able to see Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, many constellations, and much more. The only light contamination we had was from the beautiful full moon. We stayed with our 8 and 12 year old children and they had a great time.

The property is remote and we recommend a 4WD vehicle to get there. The unpaved road makes for slow travel to the home, but very doable and more than worth the trip. We purchased our food in Santa Fe, because it had the most options for groceries and we were staying there prior to our trip to Abiquiu. Supplies can be purchased in Espanola as well, but fewer grocery options. There is also Bode's in Abiquiu which is wonderful but more of a market with limited options. We were sad to leave and will definitely be back.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week for the 4th of July holiday, to say we're satisfied would be a huge understatement. The only questions I had were during the booking process. The information provided by the owners from then on covered everything, right down to directions by the tenth of a mile after you get off the main road, incredibly helpful. Our damage deposit (which was optional) refund was initiated less than 48 hours after checkout.

The views were nothing short of amazing. I’ve never seen such colorful sunsets. I would definitely suggest stargazing from the hot tub, seeing the Milky Way for the first time was an indescribable experience.

The home itself is immaculately maintained but doesn’t give you that institutional/hotel feel. It’s warm, welcoming and feels like home. The photos don't do it justice. Everything you need is provided other than clothes and your food. The owners thought of everything, extra phone chargers and all.

I would recommend, 10/10. We were already planning our next visit before we left.

Wonderful home in a magical landscape!

  • 5 of 5

The Casita del Lago is a treasure beyond compare. Beautifully built and maintained with absolute care, the Casita invites you into a world of rare natural beauty, silence, and creative explorations. This has been our third stay at the Casita in two years, and memories of those times keep nourishing our everyday. Thank you so much for making this piece of heaven! Cannot wait to return!

Stunning Mountain Views from an Amazing Property

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and one other couple stayed in this beautiful house for five utterly, relaxing nights. As someone who stays in around 20 rental properties per year, I can say without hesitation that the Casita stands a cut above the rest. The house is well furnished with a fully stocked spice drawer and everything you need to make a good meal. After doing groceries in Espanola, we cooked and grilled out every night of our stay. The master room has one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in, including hotel quality sheets. I slept like a baby each night.

The views from the house are so gorgeous you feel as though you're sitting in the middle of an epic, Western movie set. I could have happily stayed there all summer. If you're looking for peace and quiet in one of the most relaxing places in the U.S., I highly recommend this property. We especially enjoyed getting in the hot tub and walking down to jump in the lake. During our stay, I was training for a half-marathon, and I was able to run on the roads surrounding the property without problem, not to mention that the views on my runs were spectacular!

There are a number of attractions within 30 minutes to an hour from the Casita that we really enjoyed visiting: the Echo Amphitheater, the Abiquiu Inn and O'Keeffe house, the Monastery of Christ in the Desert (beautiful drive to one of the most secluded monasteries in the U.S.), and of course, all of downtown Santa Fe.

Carol is extremely responsive and friendly. She and her husband obviously take pride in their listing and genuinely care that you had a good stay. I can't wait to book from them again. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Hi Jocelyn, Thank you for your kind words - we are so glad you were able to experience Abiquiu from The Casita del Lago and we knew you would have a wonderful time exploring. It is such a treasure to be able to walk down to the lake for swimming or fishing. There have been so many movies filmed in Abiquiu - so the movie producers must agree with you about feeling like you are on a western set - including Cowboys and Aliens, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, 3:10 to Yuma, Wyatt Earp, Silverado, The Missing...and more!! Thanks again, Jocelyn - we hope you have the opportunity to visit Abiquiu again and we welcome you back any time! Carol

There Should Really Be a Sixth Star!!!

  • 5 of 5

When we first saw the Casita we thought it might be smaller than we had imagined....then we stepped inside and were transported to this heavenly oasis. Tall windows, plush couches and an open floor plan instantly left us awestruck. Our family of five settled in quite comfortably as we watched sunsets and the animal life sprang into action. With three kids under 9 we worried about the usual "I'm bored" mantra. We never heard those words. A wonderfully equipped kitchen allowed for family meals and "us" time. The information book contained so many adventures we will have to return to accomplish them all. The owners are meticulous and thoughtful with every piece of decor, we couldn't have asked for a better trip. Thank you to the generous family that allows visitors in their beautiful Casita.

Owner's Response: Hi Michael, Wow - thank you so much for your kind words. Your review means so much to us - we thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are very happy that you enjoyed our home and the paradise surrounding it. We frequently hear about how much families and kids love the home - the hiking, fishing, exploring, the lake, the wild life - what's not to love!! Again, thank you. We welcome you back any time...it's a nice drive from Dallas! Until next time.... Carolyn and Tom
