ULTIMATE PRIVACY

Imagine an enclave of a storybook casita set among the dreamy landscape in the Land of Enchantment. That’s The Casita del Lago - a haven of luxury and privacy that embraces the architecture and design of New Mexico and the southwest. It’s a southwestern paradise on 22 Abiquiu Lakefront acres in The Land of Enchantment. The Casita is exquisitely designed space that celebrates the beauty unfolding outside with expansive windows, verandas and patios, creating myriad spots to experience paradise uninterrupted.

THE CASITA

We know that where you choose to stay is a defining part of your journey. At The Casita del Lago, we strive to make our guests feel as though they've come home. So welcome home - and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime.

Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has views, ammenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

The Casita del Lago is a modern house on its own 22 acres. You will have total privacy in your remote, luxurious vacation home. As your hosts, we will leave you undisturbed unless you have questions or need help....if you do, we will respond immediately.

RATES

Our daily price includes all fees and taxes (with the exception of the $125 cleaning fee and additional lodging fee if your party has more than 4 members), free WIFI, free cable TV, charcoal and firewood. See the Rates section of this site for more information. You may also visit our website to view all policies - including cancellation policies, hot tub use, etc.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - ON ABIQUIU LAKE!

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting a home on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

RESERVATIONS

You may use the 'Book it Now' button to reserve using e-check (preferred) or credit card ... or you may mail us a check.

MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE HOME

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

About Carolyn Calfee

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience.

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this place found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

360 degree panoramic views of paradise! Luxury adobe Casita on the shores of Abiquiu Lake - it is a house and property like no other. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

A Wonderful place to relax

Our annual girls trip was made even more special with the beautiful vistas and lovely atmosphere of Casita del Lago in Abiquiui. We were blown away by the way scenery changed every hour. The home was the icing on the cake...an absolutely beautiful place. We will be back.

Lovely Home in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough about the Casita del Lago. The house is very well

designed and maintained and quite comfortable. The huge glass windows allow an unobstructed view of the gorgeous surroundings. We loved star gazing from the outdoor hot tub. There are good walks right from the house. Ghost Ranch is only 19 miles away(Don't miss it). The long gravel road leading to the Casita can be a challenge, but is well worth it. Thanks for making your home available to us. It was a treat to spend time here.

Owner's Response: Don and Mary, Thank you so much for choosing The Casita del Lago for your vacation - we are so glad you stayed with us and experienced the Land of Enchantment from Abiquiu Lake. We designed the house with the floor to ceiling windows so we could capture every view; the windows are like a picture frame for the most amazing vistas. Thank you also for leaving us such a wonderful review and we do hope to welcome you back again in the future. Best, Carolyn

Quiet and Beautiful!!

  • 5 of 5

This property is great! My wife and I stayed here the first week of April and were just mesmerized. Gorgeous scenery and unbelievable silence! The home is perfect as well! There is another home down the hill a short distance away, but we never even saw the guests. Still felt very secluded and private. Carolyn was more than accommodating and has the property set up with all the information you will need to enjoy and explore the area. Would definitely recommend to anyone going to the area!

Owner's Response: Hi Richard, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review for The Casita del Lago. We appreciate your kind words - and we are so glad you were able to experience this beautiful spot on planet earth. The views certainly are mesmerizing and the silence is a gift. It's amazing how much noise surrounds us every day; you don't realize it until you are blessed to unwind in a location without noise and light pollution! You were a pleasure to work with and I enjoyed our communications. We welcome you back any time and hope your travels bring you back to Abiquiu some time soon. Best, Carolyn

Spectacular Home & Views!!

  • 5 of 5

My family spent one week in this beautiful, modern, adobe home. The home is just as it is advertised. The home is wonderful and has all the amenities you need - you just need to bring your food. We loved the traditional southwestern furnishings and furniture, loved the stone fireplace and the floor to ceiling windows. Our kids loved the free wifi and TVs - so everyone was happy. There are so many great things about staying here but the view has to be on the top of the list. The house is on Abiquiu Lake and you will miss these views if you stay in town because this area is in a gated community right on the lake. We actually were shocked at the beauty…we just hadn’t seen this side of Abiquiu before. The lake is between beautiful ancient red rocks and mountains on one side and Pedernal on the other. It is peaceful and stunning. The hot tub is located amongst the rocks overlooking the lake. It is remote, private, quiet - an amazing time. We visited all the local sites including Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Ra Paulette cave and Plaza Blanca. And we loved coming home to The Casita every night. The hosts, Carolyn and Tom, were fabulous - they respond quickly and instantly if you text them. Honestly, you will miss out if you stay anywhere else. We will be back! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Heaven

  • 5 of 5

WOW! The views here are so beautiful. And the house is just perfect. This is our second stay at The Casita del Lago and we were in awe this time like we were the first time. First the views. The house sits on Abiquiu Lake with the red rocks across the lake. With the snow, it was just an amazing view and we found ourselves awed by the beauty. It is so peaceful and beautiful - we never wanted to leave the property. Everyone talks about the hot tub and it was fantastic. So many stars at night. It's quiet, peaceful and relaxing here. No traffic, street lights, noise. Heaven. Then there is the house. They call it a casita but it is a full house furnished with wonderful traditional furniture. It is comfortable and has everything you need and was spotless. The master bedroom was so comfortable, water pressure strong, kitchen fully furnished, lots of spices and condiments in the kitchen, new pots and pans. The home has two TVs and free WIFI. Outdoor porches. Outdoor fire pit. We were just two people but the home could easily accommodate six. The property is beautiful and you can hike up the mesa tops or down to the lake. We loved the fact that the area is gated. The owners were fantastic (incredibly responsive) and Ramey (property manager) was delightful. We also enjoyed our privacy - the house is yours and there is no other house attached or people around. Very private. We absolutely loved our time here and will be back.
