THE CASITA

We know that where you choose to stay is a defining part of your journey. At The Casita del Lago, we strive to make our guests feel as though they've come home. So welcome home - and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime in Abiquiu, New Mexico.

Unsurpassed and extraordinary, The Casita del Lago has Abiquiu views, ammenities and comfort that will leave you breathless in The Land of Enchantment. Whether you are looking for a vacation home base to explore Northern New Mexico, lodging for your classes at nearby Ghost Ranch, the perfect spot to create your art, or a get-away-from-it-all vacation - The Casita del Lago is your destination. Conveniently located and yet very remote, The Casita is located between Santa Fe and Taos (60 miles northwest of Santa Fe and 90 miles southwest of Taos) just outside the historic town of Abiquiú on Abiquiú Lake, across the lake from Ghost Ranch. Located in a gated community that borders undeveloped Ghost Ranch land, the views will take your breath away as you drive towards the lake on private roads to reach The Casita. This IS the Land of Enchantment at its most amazing best.

The Casita del Lago is a modern house on its own 22 acres. You will have total privacy in your remote, luxurious vacation home. As your hosts, we will leave you undisturbed unless you have questions or need help....if you do, we will respond immediately.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - ON ABIQUIU LAKE!

Why stay on Abiquiu Lake? It's quite simple: if you stay anywhere else, you will miss out on some of the most beautiful views in Northern New Mexico! Renting a home on Abiquiu Lake not only gives you lake access, but it provides you with views that will leave you breathless. From our side of the lake you have views of the ancient red rocks, the quiet and beautiful blue waters of Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Cerro Pedernal and Carson National Forest. Best of all, although we are located on lakefront property, we do not have mosquitos or other annoying insects (no more so than anyplace in the state in general). Abiquiu is a wonderful village but there is so much more to see. Outside of town you will find the major attractions - Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, and beautiful Abiquiu Lake - and we are conveniently located near all of them. Oh, and yes - we do have cell phone coverage and cable TV for those moments when you decide to reconnect to reality.

MORE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE HOME

Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.

We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, original artwork by southwestern artists, an indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!

Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.

The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.

Extra care was taken to craft this home. It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized -- the Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.

For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

About Carolyn Calfee

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience.

Carolyn Calfee purchased this house in 2009

Why Carolyn Calfee chose New Mexico

Quite simply, this spot on Abiquiu Lake found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

360 degree panoramic views of paradise in Abiquiu, New Mexico! Luxury adobe Casita on the shores of Abiquiu Lake - it is a house and property like no other. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.

Abiquiu at its best

  • 5 of 5

I still can't believe the view from this comfortable home at the end of the earth. The gaze lingers on Abiquiu Lake, the yellow and red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, the serene landforms as far as the eye can see, the endless blue sky. Behind the home, Georgia O'Keeffe's Pedernal stands timeless and intriguing. It's a 40 or so minute drive to the monastery where wildlife abounds or to Georgia's O'Keefe's Abiquiu home in the other direction, but who needs to leave this place of rare beauty? You will understand why O'Keeffe was drawn to the area. On a practical level, the house is elegant yet in tune with its surroundings. Best of all, the host, Carolyn, is a pure delight. I promise, I am going back.

Inspirational, Restorative, Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5

I lived in this astoundingly beautiful home for two months. I cannot imagine that there is a more perfect place to experience the beauty of New Mexico's high desert. Abiquiu Lake, Cerro Pedernal and Ghost Ranch provide incredibly beautiful landscapes and this home puts you right in the midst of that beauty from every room in the house. If you are like me, you will catch your breath every morning as you get your first view of your surroundings from the floor to ceiling windows. You can sit with a beverage on the portal in the afternoon and watch the light change on the red rocks. You can be enveloped by quiet broken only by the lapping of Abiquiu Lake on the shore below you. You can get lost in the vastness of the sky, day or night. This would be enough if the living quarters were only mediocre. But they are exceptional. Comfortable beds with high quality linens. A well-equipped kitchen. Beautiful carved doors and bath tiles. Hot tub. A ultra-responsive owner who clearly wants your stay to be the best. If you get a chance to go to Abiquiu, stay in this home. You will not be sorry and I expect you will remember your stay there fondly for a very long time.

Beauty everywhere at the Casita del Lago!

  • 5 of 5

Owner - From the beginning, Carolyn was reliable and courteous as a host and promptly provided great local activity information, maps, directions and door code information.

Location/Drive – Please take Carolyn’s advice and arrive during daylight hours. The views of the Abiquiú Lake and surrounding area on our drive to the home were so beautiful! Once off the main road, we drove slowly on the dirt country roads to make sure we followed the instructions carefully. The county roads were marked and were not very elevated until right outside the home which had a downhill slope into the gravel driveway. Carolyn’s directions were spot on!

Privacy - There was one surprise for us which was a home about 200 yards away which does not appear on any of the photos or as part of the description on the rental site. During our stay at the Casita, the couple staying at the home next door traveled with two large dogs and often came out of the home with binoculars during the day and flashlights at night which made us feel a bit vulnerable without any blinds for the front windows.

Interior Home –The home description was accurate. The Casita del Lago was extremely neat, clean and cozy. It was obvious this home is well taken care of with quality furnishings and nice personal touches throughout the home. The kitchen had all the pots/pans/dishes you could ask for with and the pantry had lots of extras left over from previous guests like sugar, cooking spray, coffee filters, and canned goods which came in handy a few times when we forgot a few things from the grocery store. The beds were extremely comfortable with enough linen and blankets to keep us warm at night. The bathrooms had plenty of plush towels and we had no problems with hot water for four showers each night.

Exterior Home - Our family stayed outside mostly during our stay enjoying the beautiful property and fell in love with the amazing natural surroundings. We really appreciated and enjoyed the notable landscape improvements around the home along with the amazing ever-changing colors among the clouds and mountains.

Technical Stuff – The Direct TV and internet worked very well during our stay; we were challenged at times to receive cell phone reception for our AT&T and Verizon cell phones. This wasn’t really a problem, we just had to walk around outside for a few minutes to get solid signal strength.

Thank you, Carolyn, for sharing your amazing home and helping us create many wonderful family memories!

Amazing casita and awe inspiring area

  • 5 of 5

Once again, an indescribable experience. The casita and its views are absolutely wonderful. I got to see the expansive night sky and Milky Way this time, and from the hot tub. That was a real treat. We saw hawks and bald eagles from the living room, almost daily. We made trips to Taos and Chimayo - we even looked at land. ;) And added bonus... it snowed all night before we left - the casita and its breathtaking surroundings were so beautiful in the morning.

Definitely will get you some pics. Also, looking to be vacation home neighbors. :)

Owner's Response: Summer, Thank you for staying with us again - we are so appreciative of our return guests! So glad you had another great stay. The eagles are amazing right now - they seem to have taken a liking to the lake and our home! I'm also glad you were able to visit both Taos and Chimayo on this trip - you just can't see all the sights in one week. And yes, please send pictures!! We love having you as a guest but would also love to have you as a neighbor! The lot right next door to us is for sale - the last lakefront lot: http://www.thecasitadellago.com/lakefronts-at-abiquiu-lot-3.html We hope to welcome you back again soon! Best, Carolyn

Still thinking about this house a month later

  • 5 of 5

The Casita was comfortable for my family of 4 the moment we walked in. The views are quintessential New Mexico - mountains, a canyon, hills, a lake - very inspiring. We cooked all of our meals in the well equipped kitchen. We went on many wonderful day trips to Ghost Ranch, Bandolier, Chimayo, Taos, Ojo Caliente, and while the house is remote (which is what we loved about it), it was the perfect home base for us to explore northern New Mexico. The owners seem like lovely people, and were very helpful. The hot tub was not working, and they tried to fix it for us while we were there. I would love to return someday!
