The Casita del Lago is a custom built, luxury adobe lakefront home that sits on 22 acres on Abiquiu Lake. There are three main reasons why our guests love this home and why so many of them return year after year: the quality home and amenities, the surroundings, and the location. And, of course, our mission to provide exceptional service and ensure you have a perfect vacation in The Land of Enchantment. We are proud to be the only Abiquiu area vacation rental home to win the prestigious TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. THE HOME

We built the adobe home into the shore above Abiquiu Lake. The home has two bedrooms, two baths, a full and modern kitchen, an open concept family room, desk area and dining area, fireplace and laundry facilities. There are floor-to-ceiling windows to capture the amazing views from every direction: Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River, Red Rocks, green fields, Cerro Pedernal, Carson National Forest, Ghost Ranch, and more. Outside, you will find heated patios, amazing spots to sit and take in the views, a BBQ grill, a hot tub built into the rocks, a fire pit overlooking the arroyo, a hiking path to the lake, and 22 acres to explore.

The home is like no other in terms of design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, top rated appliances, indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, air conditioning, modern technology, and furnished outdoor living spaces. The east and west portals are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. We subscribe to cable TV and the fastest Internet in the area - and both are offered to you free of charge. We also include firewood, laundry supplies, BBQ supplies and many spices/seasonings.

SURROUNDINGS

Literally, you will feel as if you have stepped into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! The home is located on 22 acres of private Abiquiu lakefront property in a gated community with lake access. The drive to the home with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! You will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

The location provides an absence of both noise and light pollution. The lakefront property provides guests with lake access for swimming, fishing, hiking - or bring your kayaks or boat to explore the lake. There is a cove at the shore on our property where our kids love to swim.

The 6-person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge Firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for s’mores and your favorite ghost story.

ABIQUIU LOCATION

We have a deep appreciation for the land and its history of this area - from dinosaurs, to Native American pueblos and cliff dwellings, to Spanish explorers, to cattle wrestlers, to ghosts and witches, to Georgia O’Keeffe - all the way to our current age where the past history and culture blends with the artist colony that Abiquiu has become.

The home is conveniently located to Ghostranch, Echo Amphitheater, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Plaza Blanca, Pedernal, and the Carson National Forest. You will also want to explore the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, whitewater rafting down the Chama River, the Ra Paulette Cave Tour, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, Native American pueblos, and other amazing sites. Plan easy day trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, and Bandelier National Monument.

About Carolyn Calfee

Hello! We are Carolyn and Tom Calfee, owners of The Casita del Lago. We are parents to three awesome kids who are now young adults. We are active people - love hiking, skiing, running (well, we don’t love that but we do it), scuba diving, boating, riding Tom's Harley.

We enjoy sharing the beauty and magic of our home in the Land of Enchantment and allowing others to experience this incredible location…if you haven’t seen the sun rise or set over Abiquiu Lake and the red rocks, or, if you haven’t experienced an absence of noise and light pollution - then, well, you’ve missed the best part of Abiquiu.

We have met people from all over the world who have discovered The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake. Honestly, we are frequently surprised by how many people know about the little village of Abiquiu…how a couple in Australia heard about our home or why a guest from Spain would choose our home so he could swim (train) in Abiquiu Lake every morning. Meeting our guests - who quickly become part of our Casita del Lago family - is the best part of this experience. We pride ourselves in setting an example as honest, ethical hosts who want every guest to have a perfect experience. Because of this, we have a high rate of return guests.

Why Carolyn Calfee chose Youngsville

Quite simply, this spot on Abiquiu Lake found us. We found the most beautiful spot on planet earth back in 2009 - we couldn’t believe land surrounded by a lake, a river, million-year-old red rocks, and Pedernal was for sale. We purchased our land that very night. Eventually we built The Casita del Lago on the lakefront property and we absolutely treasure the wide-open spaces, starry night skies, sage green mesas, purple mountains and red rocks. We also deeply appreciate the culture, history of this area and the spiritual energy that makes this the "Land of Enchantment". There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the landscapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.

What makes this house unique

Rare lakefront home on Abiquiu Lake. 360 degree panoramic views of paradise in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways, hand carved wooden doors, unique granite, lit nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace, and authentic furniture and art work. The home also incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the lake. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, eat your meal on the outdoor picnic table overlooking the lake, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor fire pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the eastern Portal and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or, just curl up on the circular oversized chaise and warm up to the afternoon sun. And - those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.

Perfect!

Abiquiu is a great little village with a lot of history. Besides Georgia O'Keeffe, there is wonderful Ghost Ranch and the lake - both are so beautiful. You can hike and recharge here forever. We did NOT want to leave! The house is unbelieveable. When you rent a vacation home, you never know what to expect. Well, believe us - this is paradise. Wonderful high-end home, great furnishings, thick wooden doors, the kitchen has everything (pots, pans, dishes, spices, coffee, waffle maker, blender, etc etc). Bed super comfy. Great linens and towels. And best, a huge hot tub steps away from the house. Sit in there at night and watch the stars and galaxies and shooting stars. Easy and fun hike down to the water. At the water's edge there is a cove where you can fish (and swim if it was warmer). But it's an inlet so it's protected. Fun rocks all around. There is a fire pit near the edge of the land that is super cool; we didn't light a fire because it was too windy but we will definitely do this when we come back. Speaking of coming back, we ARE coming back! Soon! Thanks for a great say!

The only place we stay in Abiquiu

This is our third visit to The Casita del Lago, and we absolutely love this home. It is a beautiful home with quality furnishings. The kitchen has everything you need. The owner has really put a lot of thought and love into this home. The views are better than the reviews even say! Such a great spot. The lake, the hot tub, the quiet, the wind...we will be back. And the owners are incredibly responsive.

Peace, Serenity, Perfection.

Back for a third time - this time on our way home so The Casita del Lago was the last stop. As always, a wonderful experience where you can totally escape from the stresses of everyday life. This is an amazing home built into the shore above Abiquiu Lake. You can hike down to the lake where they have a cove at the water's edge. It's more beautiful than the pictures show, if you can believe that. New kitchen is awesome! We love the hot tub and the fire pit over the arroyo. Wish we could live here instead of Chicago :-(.

Perfect lakefront house

A wonderful house! Everything we needed, we had. The location is great, the hot tub was perfect, and the weather was a perfect mix of warm, then snow (perfect for the fireplace too).

2nd Stay in Paradise

We loved it so much the first time, we came back a second time. And, if possible, it was even better this time! The owners had the kitchen remodeled and it just looks and feels so Santa Fe/Taos in spirit! New appliances. Makes a perfect place even more perfect, if possible. We love this home and the owners make us feel so welcome. We feel blessed to be able to share this little piece of paradise. You definitely should stay here. The home is very high end (solid wood, hand scraped doors, granite counters, high end appliances, beautiful artwork, traditional furniture, etc.). The views are too pretty to describe in words. We woke up every morning and had coffee outside at the picnic table, staring at the lake and red rocks. There is total silence except for the wind. Heaven. Thank you Carolyn and Tom.

We will refund the security deposit within seven days after you check out provided: you check out on time; there is no damage to the home, property or the home's contents; furniture is in its original location; and there are no missing items. Sorry, no smoking and no pets. Use "Book Now" functionality to use e-check (preferred) or credit card. We generally require a minimum of a two night stay, but there are times where we can accept a single night - reach out to us to inquire.
