Gorgeous and Well-Appointed Bali Temple offers 160 degree Ocean Views and a wonderfully relaxing and peaceful Hawaii experience that will leave you fully rejuvenated.
Bali Temple is truly a unique and special place to land in Hawaii, and is known for its dramatic setting, beautiful architecture and luxuriously well-appointed amenities.
Bali Temple is located right on the 1993 lava flow which has created 160 degree expansive Pacific Ocean whitewater views for your enjoyment. There is a private black sand beach a few hundred yards away to enjoy year round sunrises and sunsets and watch the humpback whales breaching during the winter months.
Bali Temple was completely remodeled in 2007 and enjoys a fully equipped modern kitchen, double vanity sinks, 6’ spa bathtub, granite, gorgeous Mahogany wood trim accents, expansive picture windows looking out to the ocean, large mirrors, a covered lanai, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, 100% cotton bedding, and thick bath towels.
There are many spectacular sites to visit during your stay: visit Kehena Beach, a gorgeous black sand beach where you may be lucky to swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins, and your (non) clothing is optional. Snorkel in the tide pools of Kapoho. Check out the numerous Volcano Touring activities such as: Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, Lava Boat Tours, Lava Hikes, and the Geothermal Heated Hot Ponds. Experience an abundance of shopping for the true tastes of Hawaii with its abundant selections of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and unique gift items at either Maku'u Market in Pahoa (Saturday), the Kaimu Market (Wednesday night, and ½ mile away from Bali Temple!) complete with Hawaiian music, and the Hilo Farmer's Market (Wednesday and Saturday). Acquaint yourself with the Island flora with a tour at the Botanical Gardens, sightsee and explore numerous waterfalls, Whale Watch from the lanai, indulge yourself with fine Dining, and dance it all off at Ecstatic Dance on Sundays at Kalani, and then the Drum Circle on Sunday afternoon at Kehena Beach. There are numerous Yoga Classes, Pilates Classes, and massage therapists ready to treat you!
Dining options from Bali Temple are numerous: Right in the neighborhood is an authentic Ava Bar, serving up the local and relaxing Kava beverage, with the Kalapana Village Café is right next door, open til 9pm. Kalani Honua is 4 miles down the Red Road for delicious meals too. 8 miles up the road is Pahoa Town, with numerous options in Italian, Thai, Sushi, Mexican, Kaleo’s Bar and Grill, coffee shops, etc. Hilo is 30 miles for many more choices.
When my visitors depart Bali Temple, they feel refreshed, invigorated, and much more vibrant then when they arrived. The air along our coastline has been measured to be the cleanest in the United States! The lush greenery and scenic coastline areas are inspiring.
I look forward to your visit at Bali Temple…see you soon!
I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city!
I fell in love with this property in ’06 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 200’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean!
I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live, and it shows!
Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Rachaelle purchased this house in 2006
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location!
Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city!
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Bali Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, whose lava flows just 10 or so miles away, is truly invigorating.
Walks along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Bali Temple give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...unihabited, wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night.
At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!
The Bali Temple felt like and was a luxurious getaway. Beautiful view of the ocean across the lava fields from the palatial four poster bed, nice bathroom with fluffy towels and jacuzzi, comfortable sitting and dining areas, and well equipped kitchen. Thoughtfully decorated and stocked without feeling awkwardly lived in, it was a wonderful spot for our last 3 days on The Big Island, from which we explored Puna, Volcano, & Hilo. Hilo Bay Cafe was delicious but make sure to get an outdoor table. Loved the Ahalanui thermal pool in the evening, snorkeling at Kapoho tide pools, and walking to Uncle Robert's Market. Be here for that on Wednesday night! It was a highlight of our trip. Had hoped to see the flowing lava nearby too but it was not a 30-45 min walk from the parking area as the guards told us, but more like a couple hrs. After about 4 miles w/o appropriate sun cover or hydration, we turned back. After nightfall would be better than early morning but expect a significant hike in the dark. We loved the Bali Temple and would love to return someday to do things we didn't get to do in the area like the lava tree park, Champagne pond, hit the galleries and shops in Hilo, the botanic gardens and waterfalls north of Hilo, the black sand beach nearby, and return to Uncle Robert's.
We found the perfect spot to spend a week on the Big Island of Hawaii. We walked to the ocean over the lava and in general learned what it is like to live with a volcano.
We traveled to local beaches, parks, and the friendly community of Pahoa. We also took short trips to the Volcano NP, Mauna Kea with all it's clear skies and religious history, and the shore north of Hilo with botanical gardens and waterfalls.
We cooked ourselves in the complete kitchen, with condiments and other dry goods, or enjoyed the restaurants of Pahoa. Great sleeping with the comfortable bed and the ocean breezes.
Rachaelle is a gracious host and handled any issues, mostly before we noticed them.
There is still some updating to be done , but it did not affect our 50th anniversary celebration.
Expansive views of dramatic oceanfront landscape, solitude, distinctive decor and furnishings; Bali Temple has everything you seek in a vacation rental. Unfortunately, it is also in need of a thorough cleaning and some updating.
Upon our arrival we encountered a number of housekeeping and maintenance issues. The owner, Rachaelle, responded immediately and was able to resolve several issues the very same day but others lingered for the remainder of our two week stay. From reading previous reviews we got the impression that Rachaelle occupied the lower floor of Bali Temple as a permanent resident. This is no longer the case and we can only speculate that the condition of the property was better managed while she lived there.
Also, those that prefer to prepare their own meals like we do may find the assortment of mismatched pots and pans and kitchen utensils lacking.
In terms of location Bali Temple is ideally situated for those that prefer to be off the beaten path and are willing to sacrifice easy access to some of the major tourist attractions and other parts of the island.
All in all a wonderful rental that is just in need of a little TLC.
This beautiful place cannot be accurately described in words. It must be experienced to truly understand the glory of it's surroundings. Upon entering Bali Temple for the first time, it took my breath away. The owner, Rachaelle, who is a beautiful, peaceful soul herself, had the windows open letting the soothing ocean breeze circulate through the home. The views through the multitude of spacious windows welcome you to paradise. The amenities and décor were simple luxury. I knew right away I had made the perfect choice. The location is perfect. Just far away enough to feel secluded and safe, yet close enough in all directions to find whatever it is you're looking for. I adventured out everyday, and am blessed to have experienced places and people I will never forget. This home was the perfect sanctuary to come back to after a long hot day of visiting volcano trails, waterfall trails, glorious beaches, even a visit to a local winery. I assure you. You won't regret making the decision to visit this hidden treasure.
The bali temple was definitely an experience to remember. My wife and I really enjoyed our time here during our honeymoon. It was very clean and neatly decorated. We felt very comfortable staying here. If you are looking to get away from it all and be in a very secluded area, than this is the place for you. It is in the thick of the some forest adjoining the lava flow, so be prepared for some bugs to sneak in at night if you have the lights on.
