Special house, special location: Visitors to the house immediately see how special it is! The location is unbelievable--on a bluff looking over Deep bottom Cove, one of the 'fingers' of Tisbury Great Pond. The house is what the Vineyard used to be: relaxed, uncluttered, unpretentious, well-worn and beloved. The bench on the deck looking over the water is a natural gathering place. The path in front of the house takes you down to the beach in a minute and then you can swim, sail, canoe and kayak. Sail or kayak to South Beach. Nature is all around...osprey, swans, herons, and hummingbirds. Only a few other houses in distant view. Gorgeous sunsets, wonderful stars at night.
The house has four bedrooms, including a separate master bedroom with bathroom. It sleeps seven in beds, plus there’s an extra cot bed and double mattress. Small bathtub and delightful outdoor shower. Large wrap around deck with outdoor seating. Hammock. Fully equipped kitchen, telephone, washer and drier. No TV, dishwasher or microwave. This is a place for a return to simplicity... Gas lights. (We have outlets where you can plug in the electrical items you bring, but for the most part we don’t have any electrical appliances.) Secluded. Low carbon footprint.
Spring and fall: It is particularly nice to visit the house in the spring and fall. The house is on the road that is the winter entrance to the Trustees of the Reservation Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Before June 15 and after September 15 the winter entrance gate to the refuge is open, so you can walk or drive out there in just a few minutes. This gives you easier access to South Beach. The house is beautiful in any weather, and the huckleberry scrub is particularly lovely in spring and fall.
Another house next door: We also have a smaller house next door. Check out the linked listing. (Property # 283355)
I own this house (we call it the "camp") with my brother and sister, as well as a smaller house next door (called the "cabin"). Although we live for most of the year in Columbus, Ohio, Atlanta and Boston respectively, we all and our families yearn for the few weeks during the year when we can be on the island. When we cannot be there, we rent to tenants--most of whom have been coming back for years and years. That's why you are very unlikely to find open time for rental mid-summer, but the shoulder seasons are perhaps even lovelier!
Mia Lewis purchased this house in 1963
There's no two ways about it, this house is special. When our parents bought this house it had no electricity and no running water. Now it has all the important amenities (hot and cold running water, fridge, stove, shower, washer and dryer). But it has retained its old style comfort and ease. A place like this is not for everyone, to be sure! But those who love it love it deeply.
This is a special place to gather with friends and family.
This lovely antique camp is a beautiful gem. It is situated high on the bank of Deep Bottom Cove on Great Tisbury Pond. Our family spent many hours outside on the large deck, from after breakfast until nightfall. We enjoyed nightly cocktails on the deck watching the sunset. We had dinner outside at the table on the deck, we read and napped in the hammock. You will be able to swim right outside the house, and can take kayaks to the private ocean beach if you want the waves. It is very, very quiet. We were able to set up a wireless hotspot using our VZ phones, if you need to check internet.
On arrival, all was clean and tidy. You cannot see the smaller cabin from the larger camp. You will love it if you like simple antique cabins and the outdoors. It reminds me of the Appalachian Mountain Club's Cardigan Lodge. I slept in the separate masterbedroom cabin and the bed was really comfortable. Also, for anyone wondering about bugs at the end of June, we couldn't believe it, we never even opened our bottle of bug repellant.
Plenty of room for kids to wander or ride bikes w/out major roads, yet not so far from Edgartown that you can't spontaneously say, let's go to town for ice cream. We like to go out to lunch or dinner there a few times during the week. I've been coming to the Vineyard for decades and this place is very special, we're returning in 20015.
What a great place! The house is 1.5 miles down a sandy track near the edge of a nature reserve and looks over a lagoon that opens onto the ocean. You can see one other house from the deck, some 1,000ft away behind some trees across the water, but apart from that all you can see is nature. There are several boats at your disposal (kayaks, canoes and sailboats) and you can boat for miles on the Pond and even out to the ocean. The house is clearly a well-loved family cottage - charming, tastefully decorated and exceptionally well-maintained. I'm very particular about cleanliness and was a bit concerned that such an old house might have some corners best not looked into - I've had issued with dirty rentals on the Vineyard before - but the place was professionally cleaned before our arrival and was immaculate. We lit a fire in the living room every evening and had a really cosy time reading from the great selection of books provided. My five year old daughter was enthralled by the whole camp experience and we all felt like we were living in a childrens' adventure story!
This place is heaven - secluded and beautiful. We even love the lack of electricity - you know when it gets dark, which is a nice break from the breakneck pace of regular life, and the candlelight and stargazing are perfect in the dark....
Don't expect a 5-star hotel, even though I gave it the 5-star excellent review this is a place to get away and really remember what makes your life so blessed.
After a day or so you will feel all stresses being lifted from your being as you soak in the sun, hit the nearby beach and feel all the beauty the East Coast has to offer. Let's not forget the daily view from the outdoor shower and happy hours on the expansive back deck facing the pond as local flora and fauna will overtake your soul body and mind.
My family & I have spent a portion of our summer at this vacation property for the past several years. We can't say enough about the absolute ideal setting, it is the essence of what a stay in Martha's Vineyard is all about. The history felt through the walls, the high-quality care of the home & the privacy are some of our favorites about this property.
Picture midnight swims, afternoons lounging on the deck & candlelight dinners at one of the two dinner tables. It's the type of setting were memories are made.
