About Jan Stevens

Jan Stevens was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She studied art and Interior Design at the University of Washington. In 1982 she moved to Henderson, Nevada where she designed one-of-a-kind interiors for hundreds of clients. Over 21 years ago, when her son was an infant, she established Jan Stevens Design and began her successful design business while working out of her house and being “Mom” at the same time. Jan has designed stylish, comfortable and gorgeous interiors for over 39 years. Jan’s creativity and organizational skills has lead her to other entrepreneurial endeavors such as fundraising, graphic design, writing, and photography, as well as managing the Lazy Bowen Hideaway as a vacation rental. Over the last 10 years, following her passion for Bowen’s natural beauty, Jan began photographing the island sunsets, landscapes, and flora. Starting as a hobby the photographs were given as gifts to friends and neighbors as calendars and note cards. With the encouragement of a good friend, Jan has just recently signed, framed and displayed some of her best work at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. All of Jan’s Bowen Island photography is available for sale. With all of Jan’s relatives being Canadian and living in the Vancouver area Jan’s frequent visits to her Bowen Island home makes staying in touch with family easy. The goal in the near future is to spend equal time between the sunny Southwest and the temperate rain forest of Bowen Island. This would be the best of both worlds.

UPDATE AS OF FEBRUARY 2013 ~ I am proud to say that I am now a dual citizen, US and Canadian, retroactive back to my date of birth in 1955.

Jan Stevens purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Jan Stevens chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

Our Bowen Island cabin has been in the Stevens family since 1954. When our Aunt passed we became the 2nd generation to own and care for this beautiful waterfront property. We have over 50 years of irreplaceable childhood memories of family time at the cabin: playing cards, board games, and swimming all day and night. It only makes sense to share this special property with other families that will appreciate the many special qualities of Bowen Island: slow pace, safe environment, and spectacular waterfront setting among a few. We are thrilled to be creating new family memories for our son and hope the Lazy Bowen Hideaway can be a part of your family history too.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the comfort of our home while we sit and enjoy the view from all angles of the property. Nature surrounds us and changes with the seasons from vivid yellow Laburnum and forsythia to the rich evergreen of the fir and cedar trees. While we enjoy cruise ships and ferries sailing by as we view them through the ancient and protected Arbutus trees on the property. but my favorite is catching the Island Deer grazing on the berries and salal below the deck.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Loved the cozy comfort of the Lazy Bowen Hideaway! Enjoyed fresh halibut from Ruddy's, picniced on Killarney Lake and read on the deck enjoying the view...breathtaking! We could hear the Canucks win from the deck.

Loved it...loved it....loved it!!!

Mom says, "Years of video games and drag racing could not prepare us for the road down. Thankfully we have hooves. Ha ha"

Beautiful Setting For A Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a house!

We enjoyed a lovely two days away from the mainland in this gorgeous home. The beach is a very short walk downhill and our kids could have tossed rocks in the ocean for hours - good rock-hounding! The house is beautifully appointed with a pretty view and has everything you need! We have stayed in many rentals and the toughest part is knowing what to bring and what to leave home. I assure you, all you need is the food you wish to cook. The kitchen has all the gadgets you might require, even seasonings. They provide kleenex, paper towels, TP, garbage bags, ALL the incidentals. You can find scissors and tape, foil and cling-wrap. There are books, games and movies (the player is VHS and DVD compatible - not Blu-ray) to watch and if you never want to leave you could be perfectly entertained on site.

Not a complaint, but a point of note: While the owner does specify that it is a 5 minute walk if you don't have a vehicle capable of the drive, the walk is down a fairly steep mostly-dirt road. People with infants should anticipate using a carrier v. stroller and disabled or elderly visitors might have a difficult time negotiating the incline. It's good cardio though! Phew!

We will definitely recommend to our friends and family in future.

Beautiful and elegant, yet comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED our stay at the hideaway! The multiple decks and windows allowed for stunning views of the water and bald eagles. The kitchen was very modern and had everything we could possibly need (and then some). The hideaway was very tastefully decorated; a balance of antique, natural and modern. It was apparent that Jan has a background in interior design! We thoroughly enjoyed minute of our vacation!

Owner's Response: Katherine, thank you so much for your kind words. I am so happy that you enjoyed the Lazy Bowen Hideaway views and that Eagle that has staked his territory in our trees. It is always thrilling to see them fly so close to the house. I am an interior designer by profession, since 1978…….nearly 40 years now. Even though I am semi-retired from Jan Stevens Design the creativity is always there. When I inherited the Hideaway in 2004 it came with my Aunt Jerry’s 1970’s furnishings and yard sales finds. I loved working with the olive greens and gold…….then updating the colour palette and juxtaposing the old with the new……..I think the eclectic feel is “so cabin” and adds character to any décor. As we have added new sofas and chairs here and there we not only focused on classic style but comfort…..comfort is of utmost importance in your home away from home. The new open concept kitchen has really opened up the living space. The new appliances, filtered water, bright LED lighting and lots of counter space has been a much loved improvement. We love that a guest’s first step into the Hideaway leaves them in awe as they look through the new kitchen, overtop of the well-furnished living room and out to the gorgeous panoramic water views. We are so glad you appreciated the interiors and the exteriors…… to have you return again, rain or shine. Your host, Jan.

A Gorgeous Rainy Escape

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I chose to honeymoon in Vancouver & Bowen specifically for the rain. We're from Southern California where the rain has been elusive for years. We spent four nights here in the hideaway and just did not want to leave. The view was spectacular. The cabin was warm and cozy. The VHS collection was great (especially if you're a Jane Austen fan). We especially enjoyed playing the Trivial Pursuit that was published 2 years after we were born. (That was a looong game!) We hiked to town daily (45 min. one-way) and took the shuttle back at night.

For those who want to fly in and not take a car to visit the hideaway, it's totally doable if you're even partially familiar with transit. From YVR, buy an all-day transit pass (~$9.50CDN) and take the blue line to City Centre. Exit the underground station and make your way to street level. From there, walk to the bus stop at West Georgia & Seymour. The sign should show service on the 257 and 257 express to Horseshoe Bay. The 257 takes a beautiful route through West Vancouver but the express takes the highway and only takes half the time. The route terminates at the ferry. Take the ferry to Bowen Island (you pay for your trip over, but not back). Once docked, you walk off the ferry and follow the rest of the crowd. You'll come across a library and in front of that library is a bench and a bus stop for the Bowen Island shuttle. Use that all-day transit pass you purchased to jump on the C11 shuttle toward Eaglecliff and let the driver know that you need to get to Cleator Road. Once at Cleator, walk down the steep switchback (a hike on its own!) to get to the Hideaway.

Owner's Response: Ramon, I am so glad that you loved the Lazy Bowen Hideaway and all the refreshing British Columbia rain. The Hideaway is a comfortable retreat even when it is raining outside: the cozy fireplace, the video library and the games. Plus throws and comfortable sofas and beds. So glad you had a memorable honeymoon and hope you will return to anniversary your romantic memories soon.

Beautiful place for a weekend getaway. Treacherous driveway but it sounds like improvements are to be made soon! We will definitely be coming back. A word of advice - bring your own music player as there are no hook-ups for devices here. Also bring your bathing suits for the super close dock (it has a diving board!) 100% recommend this place for a couples getaway.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Kaylee for taking your time to leave us a GREAT review. Glad to have your return. Yes never forget your swim suit especially with the beach and our swimming dock just being a minute down the trail. We agree, our driveway is a challenge and not for the faint of heart. Good to repeat that an All-Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel drive is required to drive down to the Hideaway. Or park at the top of the driveway and make the 5 minute walk down to the house........once there the VIEW IS BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks for the suggestion re the music hook ups. We will look into it.

What a Beautiful Rental!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway for two nights as part of a longer trip to the Pacific Northwest. It was everything that we'd hoped it would be! The rental is located in a peaceful area of the island and has a large deck overlooking the water. It is just a short walk down to a dock where my kids (ages 10 & 11) were able to do a little swimming. We enjoyed spending mornings on the deck sipping warm drinks and watching for bald eagles through the binoculars (we saw two!). The rental itself was very clean and comfortable. My favorite part was the kitchen! It was well-stocked and seemed newly-renovated. As others have noted it is a steep walk/drive from the main road to the property. We'd planned to get an SUV then at the last minute opted for a sedan and just parked on the road. This was not a problem at all. Transporting luggage took a little extra effort but not a big deal for a reasonably fit person. Big "thank you" to Jan for being a wonderful host! She gave us all of the information that we needed in a timely manner and provided everything we might want in the rental.

Owner's Response: So glad that we could share our island paradise with Arizona natives. The contrast of the temperate rain forest to the desert is a real treat. You are exactly right, it is a newly renovated kitchen as of December 2014. The open concept, large granite counter dining and prep space plus the addition of the dishwasher is of great benefit to all of our guests. You should have seen the 38 year old kitchen...this is way better. The new decks just above the beach are ideal for enjoying coffee, or wine and letting the ships sail by. Loved having you and hope you will be our guests again soon. Glad to hear that the walk down to the house was easy for is a GREAT exercise opportunity and only reserved for healthy active guests like yourselves. Thank you so much for taking your time to leave us a review......our futures guests will certainly appreciate your feedback.

You might like to know.................
We start our base rate at double occupancy because 60% of our guests are couples. We want couples to pay a fair nightly rate for their stay. We then add for additional guests to compensate for the additional amenity, water, power, and cleaning required.

You might like to know..............
Our additional guest rate includes adults and children. With the exception of infants that are not yet walking, we do charge for all guests including children. Unlike hotel rooms we have many nooks and crannies, glass, and objects that require deep cleaning like a real home. Our house keepers do an excellent job of cleaning after each turnover and this all takes additional time with additional guests. Plus all guests use bedding, water, towels, and other amenities.
