Our family purchased this home 14 years ago. We have enjoyed many fun-filled summers. It has been the perfect setting for visiting with grandparents, cousins and friends we don't see as often as we wish. Shelter Harbor is a wonderful community and our neighbors are terrific. There are many community activities to enjoy the 4th of July Parade, Fun Run,Sand Sculpture contest, Kayak Races,Golf Tournament,Tennis and August Beach Party.
Beyond the enjoyment of our home and the Shelter Harbor beach, it is a great location in terms of convenience... Stop and Shop,Sandy's Fine Food Emporium and Dunn's Corner Market are just minutes away.
The Owner purchased this estate in 2000
We had a great time. Loved the area. The house worked wonderfully for the 10 of us. Our favorite moments were enjoying morning coffee by the pool with hydrangeas in full bloom surrounding us. The beach was lovely. We hope to return for another visit.
This is a "grand" house! It is very spacious and offered plenty of space for our larger group...both inside and out. But it is also an historic gem..updated to suit our modern day needs. we swam in the pool and lounged in the back yard. Everything is nearby...the beach, shopping, kayaking, golf etc.. The pictures do not do it justice. It is impeccably clean and features a large, well equipped kitchen. Just can't say enough about this perfect East Coast Experience.
Walhalla is the perfect place to renew old friendships and to create new memories. Six of our roommates from UW-Oshkosh and our former boyfriends, now husbands stayed five wonderful days in Shelter Harbor. We came from Colorado, Indiana, Wisconsin and Connecticut. Our adventure began sitting the lovely backyard in the most comfortable Adirondack chairs ever. After catching up on the kids, etc. We drove the 3 miles to the Shelter Harbor private beach and enjoyed the surf and sunset. This beach rivals the best on the east coast. We grilled fresh tuna and swordfish steaks from the Fishery located 2 miles from the house and settled down to the comfort of our beds and rooms. We rose early the next morning to play 18 at the Richmond Country Club. We picked up steaks at Dunn's Corner Market on the way back home and enjoyed another feast at the long dining room table in a beautifully appointed dining room. The porch and great room are better than pictured, with room for dancing. The next day we drove to Newport, 40 minutes, and enjoyed the Mansions. They are worth the trip. At 5:30 we sailed on the Aquidneck for two hours on the Narrangansett Bay for the sunset (champagne included). On the way back to Shelter Harbor we stopped at the Matunuck Oyster Bar for great chowder and more great seafood. We settled down for the weekend enjoying the salt water pool at the house, chatting and swimming at the beach again, cocktails at the Ocean House in Watch Hill and more good steaks from the Market. Our last day was mainly beach and conversation topped off with a good bye dinner at the Shelter Harbor Inn, close and wonderful. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the house, our activities and our friendship. We will be back again!
Our stay at Walhalla was wonderful!! We rented the house as Christmas gift for our adult children so that our whole family could be together for a mini-vacation prior to my nephew's wedding at the Ocean House in Watch Hill. The house was immaculate, the rooms were spacious and breezy, and the yard was AMAZING!! It accommodated all 12 of us with NO problem at all! My 5 children range in age from 21 to 28 and every one of them said it was the best vacation they've ever had and my 2 granddaughters didn't want to leave! The owner Margaret was incredible. She is warm and kind and immediately helpful with anything we needed. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this property and I have a feeling we will be returning as well!
You look at the web site and say WOW, its so beautiful but once your there you can feel the bones of the house and you just fall in love with it. The grounds and the house are just amazing, everytime I visit I never want to leave. The house was very accomadating for 11 ladies who had a fantastic weekend, having cocktails under the sprawling tree, dinner in the dinning room, morning coffee in the ktichen and screen room, after hours in the screen room with lots of laughing had by all, walks to the pond, the Shelter Harbor Inn and around the neighborhood. We had a great breakfast at the Cooked Goose, wonderful dinner at the Oyster House, cocktails at the Ocean House with the a great view even in the rain, a walk along the cliffs in Newport, and a walk around the town of Mystic. If you don't want to eat out you can have a catered dinner or shop at specility markets, the fishery or the grocery store, all close by. Margaret the owner, is the most accomadating and approacable person, she'll fill you in on alll the best places to go. I would recommed this house to friends and relatives, the house and grounds are clean and well maintained, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything you needed to cook with, the bathroom stocked with toiletries....its just a great place to be!
Great home for a large group such as ours. Loved the screen porch and dining room for our late night meals and endless chatter! Bathrooms and bedrooms very comfortable. The grounds were fabulous and we really enjoyed walks in the morning. Overall a great rental for a large group!
