Built circa 1900, this beautiful Queen Anne house was first home to the prominent Jim Stephens and his family. Fifty five years later, it entered ours. The story goes...Ralf Carter Sr. purchased the home in a 'cash only' auction for several thousand dollars. It was here that he lived with his wife Ruth till their mid-nineties. Ralf Sr.'s hope was that his only son Ralf Jr. would retire to the Murphys home with his own wife, Evelyn. In the years following the former Carter's passing, Ralf and Evelyn lovingly restored the home to its former beauty. Until retirement day comes, the Queen Anne on 558 Main Street is now a beautiful home-away-from home for all those needing a place to stay in the charming town of Murphys, CA..
As it goes with old homes, the Queen Anne began to show its age following the elder Carter's passing. It took a year and a half to restore the home to its former beauty and no detail was overlooked. Much remains original, except for the windows. Showcasing 10' ceilings, the salon of this house was a popular place to be after the turn of the 20th century, with the parlor adjoining the living room. From the intricate woodwork details, original hardwood floors throughout, a stunning staircase, large eat-in kitchen and windows everywhere, nothings has been spared in making this house a true home. You wouldn't even know that it had no bathrooms when it was first built! The 'outhouse' has since been moved inside and made much more comfortable and modern. In fact, there are even two!

My family and I live in the quiet hills of Oakland. It is very tranquil living among nature. The Queen Anne House offers us similar feeling of peace and quiet. Even though Main Street is often busy with traffic, sitting in the backyard gives us the feeling of being away from it all. My family and I love Murphys. While retirement is not feasible yet, we decided to share our home to folks like us who like to stay in quiet places and relax.
Evelyn Carter purchased this house in 1955
Less than a five-minute walk into 'downtown', the Queen Anne is perfect for private functions or family gatherings. (please inquire for more info on this) Sitting on an over-sized, completely fenced-in compound on a prime location on Main Street, it's the ideal place for hosting a large barbecue, (with added fee)sipping coffee at twilight or playing badminton on the lawn. And with flowers, fruits, and vegetables growing abundantly around the house, you'll find everything at your disposal.
Other things of interest include:
* a farmer's market in the summer every Friday, just around the corner from the house.
* Mercer Caverns is about a mile away.
* more than twenty five wine tasting venues and vineyards dot the Murphys landscape.
* Wildly popular concerts at the local Ironstone Vineyard's Amphitheater.
* Outdoor live music and concerts at Murphys Park.
* Lots of restaurants and shops just down the street.
* Calaveras Big Trees Park is a short drive away---for hiking, biking and picnicking.
* White Pine Lake in Arnolds offers good fishing and only about 20 minutes drive.
Whatever you choose to do, we hope your stay provides you a well-deserved vacation-peace, quiet and plenty of fun. You are guests in our home. Enjoy!

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves this weekend, the Queen Anne was a perfect place for us to gather. The house was very well appointed and comfortable, slept better than I do at home.
Hopefully you found everything in order. As you can tell by the empty bottles in the recycling, we supported the local economy to our fullest.
Thanks for a wonderful weekend, we will all highly recommend your beautiful home to others.
Great location and ease of use, Evelyn is very helpful she even made sure we got our phone we left in property after checking out. Would definitely go again, had a great time staying and both roaming around Murphys and skiing at bear valley. Perfect for two families with children of various ages.
We stayed at the Queen Anne for the weekend and it was absolutely perfect! The location is fantastic, walking distance to anything you'd want to do downtown. The house was super cute and very well kept. I highly recommend the Queen Anne and look forward to staying there again soon!
I rented the Queen Ann for my sisters bachelorette party. We wanted a weekend full of wine tasting and hanging out. The Queen Ann was the perfect place for us to stay! It is a wonderful house! Plenty big enough for all of us, and had a very homey feeling. The location was just great, we were able to walk everywhere. The house was very clean and had all the nessaitites we needed for the weekend. We wouldn't have changed anything. And I would definitely stay there again.
Thank you to Eveyln for allowing us to use you home for the weekend!
We had a group staying here for a friend's wedding in the area. The location is perfect: walking distance from anywhere you'd want to check out in downtown Murphys but at the end of the main street so you have quiet and privacy when you want it. Like other reviewers mention it is charming and very obvious that the owner Evelyn takes exceptional care of this property. While it is a historical house (which can sometimes mean old and outdated) it has updated bathrooms and is kept very clean and bright. You can tell all of the linens are thoroughly washed and fresh for each guest. We were very pleased with our stay!
The house is charming; very clean and comfortable. The location was perfect, being right downtown Murphys so walking distance to great restaurants, wine tasting, shopping. The beds are upstairs so may be difficult for anyone with difficulty walking up stairs.
thanks Evelyn, for sharing your place with us, this is a great place to be! being close to downtown is ideal for us, Must also visit the awesome bakery in town!!! yum!! I would recommend this for anyone, it is very clean, beds are comfy and just all round easy going experience!! Great location for day trips to the caverns or Big trees park. Be sure to have dinner at Camps in Angels Camp - best restaurant in area.
