Why Christie Dysart chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We just love this area of MDI! There's hiking, biking, boating, exploring just minutes away. Southwest Harbor is just a little bit quieter than BarHarbor and the kids can walk or bike anywhere. There's restaurants and a great ice cream shop just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

What makes this house unique

This house has fantastic views of Southwest Harbor from almost every room in the house. There's a great marina directly across the street where you can view amazing boats, and a fun restaurant that is across the street that has outdoor seating right on the shore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great rental, thoroughly enjoyed it

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Head of Harbor house right at the beginning of peak season in Acadia. We have two young children, and felt like the house was perfect for us. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of things that were included in the house: all basic necessities plus all kinds of other things that would have been a pain to bring (child high-chair, some toys for kids, movies and DVD players and a gaming system, etc.). In general, it felt like Christie went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. There was also a nice view of the water from the large window in the main room.

In terms of location, we did end up driving to the other side of the island most days, but we did spend a few days entirely on the west side (Acadia Mountain was such a great hike we did it twice). We felt we got great bang for our buck by staying in SW Harbor.

In short, if you're staying in Southwest Harbor, this is an excellent choice.

Close to everything. Neat, clean & adorable!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a nice time at this cozy cottage with the perfect view! Everything we needed was right there in the kitchen. We didn't have to worry about the little stuff. The Dysart's had their bases covered & made our getaway more than pleasant. The house was clean & beautiful & it was so nice sitting outside watching the beautiful harbor. Thank you guys for a wonderful vacation!

Everything You'll Need on the "Quiet Side"

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Head of the Harbor! Christie thought of everything you would possibly need for a comfortable stay. To name a few of the things that were such a nice surprise are the bottled water, ice, condiments, spices, oil, everything we needed for cooking. We had pancakes a few mornings and used the Grade-A Maine maple syrup she had left by the welcome note for us. We didn't have to buy coffee because the cottage was stocked with K-cup coffee and tea bags. There was even laundry soap and dryer sheets! The bed was comfy and the bathroom towels were very heavy and cozy. Oh, and we brought our furry family member with us and there were clean dog bowls for him as well. We cooked steaks on the grill one night, which was nice to be able to do that on vacation.

We're really glad we decided to stay in SW Harbor because, although Bar Harbor is nice, we just enjoyed a more quiet and laid-back environment. It was nice driving back "home" from our adventures thinking about the cozy cottage that was awaiting us. We explored the whole Mount Desert Island and found most of the people to be super nice! One exception was maybe the owner of a restaurant in NE Harbor when first entering the town. Her name is Wendy, and I didn't understand why she was so rude. Anyway, we ended up not eating there and going back to Bar Harbor. That's the only negative experience we had while there. But we do highly suggest Beal's Lobster Pier in SW Harbor! They are great! We ate there several times and were never disappointed. They are also very dog-friendly. The little café in town, the Quiet Side Café and Ice Cream Shop, was always good too.

I'm sure I'll think of all kinds of other things I forgot to mention, but you'll just have to find out about those yourself. Great 1st trip to Maine! We will be back!

Location, Location, Location

  • 5 of 5

Located on the quiet side of MDI and in Southwest Harbor, this cozy cabin was perfect for my wife and I's getaway. Everything we needed was provided and the house was well furnished. It was clean and ready upon our arrival on Saturday. We walked down to downtown Southwest harbor on the large sidewalks in less than 5 minutes where we were able to eat, shop, and explore. This cabin is great for the coupling looking to getaway or a family with 3 kids a home base for exploration. The hiking on the quiet side was great and way less crowded than the more popular areas for hiking. Highly recommended and we will be back!

We loved our stay at head of the harbor. It was the perfect spot to get away. We loved being able to walk to town and the view of the harbor was perfect. We went to Acadia and Bar Harbor several times...less than 30 minutes and the drive is beautiful! Would highly recommend it to anyone, house is comfortable with tons of amenities and thoughtful touches, especially for families!
