In 1994 I bought my first historical home in Austin and have enjoyed being a landlord for over ten years. Separately, having used an imperfect diet instead of chemotherapy to reverse my own disabling disease, my other career objective is to use over two decades as a Registered Dietitian to bring the healing power of food to others. As featured speaker for radio and TV, medical professionals, universities and corporations, I have authored a book that sells in twelve countries and is a best seller at Amazon. A documentary of my recovery, “The Incurables”, also airs internationally on Veria TV.
Deirdre purchased this cottage in 2005
I own several 1930's cottages in old Austin, all of them in National Historical Register areas. For two years I lived in and fell in love with this cottage for many reasons. With no bars and no nightly commercial activity, this neighborhood is exceptionally quiet and safe. Having spent two years in Europe I learned to value immediate proximity to cultural activities, quality materials, and classic design over square footage. Beautiful cottages like this one became the natural fit for me. Take a look at the map provided to confirm why the cottage sits among the most expensive real estate areas in Austin. I hope you'll enjoy my enchanting cottage as much as I did while living in it.
Beautiful historical stone cottage with embedded fossils at the front door entrance. Very quiet neighborhood with immediate access to Mopac/Loop 1 and Austin's best intellectual, collegiate, music and state government activities. Unique furnishings including Les Paul memorabilia plus a dining table and buffet made from gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood, the most revered (and now protected) lumber of all time. Comfort ensured on quality mattresses and linens made from 100% cotton. Large screened in back porch and deck for outdoor enjoyment. Off street parking. Separated and private space for rest, independent work, relaxation. Access to Austin's top public schools.
Over the last two years I've had the good fortune to stay at this stone cottage for several month long visits. The cottage is on a nice street with many fine houses but if you were asked to pick the one you'd most like to stay in based on charm, the choice is easy. How often do you get to rent a place that makes you proud and happy to stay in?
Each time I arrived at this property I knew just what to expect, a home that is perfectly clean, inviting, and comfortable. This house is one of the last unmolested homes in an old neighborhood and the owner has done everything possible to keep this little house in perfect condition.
And speaking of the owner, you'll meet no better host than Deirdre. She is the sort of person that has made Austin famous. It's her dedication that has made her property special, and it's her graciousness that will make your visit effortless.
We had a WONDERFUL summer on 37th St. The neighborhood was nice and quiet for work during the day and for me to do my reading and writing assignments in the evenings, after the baby was in bed. Before or after dinner, we would often head out on the bikes to find a new neighborhood pool to enjoy. I'd forgotten how simply nice life in Texas can be. All those silly people complaining about the heat.....when you've got great city parks and pools just a short bike ride away....And great shade trees to enjoy breakfast and lunch under out on the deck. We loved it. And it was such a pleasure to look up from my book or notebook to see a lovely house. I can't imagine we would have been as comfortable or felt as at home anywhere else. Thank you so much for all the work you put into the place so that we could have such an enjoyable time there. Give our thanks to Jim and Curly, for all their help. They made us feel like we had wonderful neighbors, as if we had lived there for years.
We spent 7 weeks here and were pleased with the house, neighborhood and landlady.
Deidre was helpful with everything we needed and the neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful. Great neighborhood and convenient to everything we needed.
I would definitely rent again.
This was the perfect home for our family while we transitioned into Austin. The location made it easy to get everywhere, and we felt right at home at this cottage. Highly recommended to everyone.
We lived in the stone cottage for five months during our sabbatical visiting UT. The house was very comfortable with two bedrooms in the house and one in a cute little building in the back. The house had all the amenities we were looking for - WiFi, TV, nicely outfitted kitchen, washer/dryer, good A/C and heat, and a fenced-in backyard (Deirdre was kind enough to let our dog stay with us). I especially loved the back porch, deck and yard, with a beautiful large table and chairs it was a great place to hang out when the weather was nice. The location was extremely convenient to UT's campus. When my husband had the car out of town I could easily bike or take the bus to campus. The neighborhood is quiet, and the house is close to groceries and the original Kerbey Lane restaurant! Shoal Creek is nearby and was a good place to take the dog for a walk. Deirdre was very helpful and made sure we were comfortable without being intrusive.
Loved staying at this cottage. My family and I made it our homebase for our first two months in Austin while we searched for a house to buy. It was the perfect location - lots to do in the neighborhood (Deirdre will supply you with a list of places to try and all her recco's are excellent), a cheap Uber into the city for nights out and easy access to the Mopac/TX-1 to get North to Cedar Park.
Deidre is a fabulous host. Super responsive to any requests or questions. Highly recommended place to stay if you are visiting Austin for a long stretch.
