great maine getaway
great old farmhouse, close to acadia and bar harbor, we relaxed when we werent in the park and it had a great home feeling about it
A lovely old cottage only a ten minute drive from Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. There is plenty of space for people to relax after a long day either together or off in a nook somewhere by themselves. Everyone we went with liked the house and enjoyed the charm and quirkiness. Realistically the only point to note is that the heating system is under renovation (which we didn't know before we arrived) but this wasn't really an issue as space heaters had been provided and no one was left feeling cold.
I am glad this guest enjoyed the house. We have a new heating system installed with a new furnace and chimney flue liner so any oil smell mentioned in the past has been eliminated.
Chilly Stay in Charming House
This home is a mid-19th century house that is charming but needs updating. It would have been fine except for the heating situation and the fact that we could not lock the front door. Upon arrival, we discovered a note from the owner telling us that the furnace was being replaced and that we were to use the space heaters. Not good for an October visit. The home was cold when we arrived and cold every time we returned from our outings. The heaters were adequate. However, it was difficult to control the temperature and it took several hours before the house was comfortable enough to take off our outerwear. We wore our jackets around the house until it warmed up. Rather like camping, but in a house - not what we had in mind; especially with 2 children. We had to get up in the middle of the night to adjust the heater temperatures in the bedrooms. We should have been told about the furnace situation in advance of our arrival. In addition, some amenities were lacking, i.e. Kleenex, bath soap, waste baskets - there was only one waste basket for the entire second floor. There was one bottle of hand soap in the bathroom - no bath soap. Also, a number of the windows didn’t close completely. We decided to depart a day early since we were all having trouble sleeping. The owner was called at nine in the morning of our departure day. We heard from him a few days later. He has stated that he will be refunding at least a portion of the fee for the night that we omitted from our stay. Have not yet received any remuneration. We probably would not stay in this home again. It is in a lovely location - very convenient to Bar Harbor - but we would look for a different place, if we came back.
Great place to stay!
We had a great stay in this picturesque house over Labor Day weekend. The house was large, was large, easily fitting seven people. Very close to the town and Acadia. Perfect for a group looking to explore the area and enjoy their evenings at the house
Unprofessional and over represented
My family and I rented this property for 4 days recently and when we got there, there had been a mixup and the cleaning staff had not turned the house over yet. It was difficult to get inside and I hadn’t received any check in instructions. Once we finally got inside, the house was dark and looked very old. We went upstairs and the beds had all the sheets curled in the corner and the toilet had not been flushed. We attempted to flush it and the water had been shut off. The fire alarm was off the ceiling in one of the bedrooms, there was tape on the windows, and the front door would not open, which are all fire hazards. Even if all the beds were made, they were small and the upstairs had a terrible stench and the house did not look like what we were promised. We decided we were not comfortable staying here and found a hotel to stay in. When we called to ask for a refund, the owner said he would refund for a night but have it cleaned for the other nights. We said even with it cleaned, we do not want to stay here. I’ve never heard of it being the responsibility of cleaning staff to turn water back on or put fire alarms back on the ceiling. The owner refused to refund us for the other nights and the conversation started perfectly pleasant until he continued to argue with us. He was extremely pushy and unprofessional and explained how great the house was. What the pictures show oversell this house completely. If the owner was not so difficult I would not leave such a harsh review, but overall, working with this owner and with HomeAway was a nightmare. When I spoke to HomeAway they said they are not responsible for any of the money dealings. Why would you use them then? If I could give this house negative stars I would. What should have been a nice celebration for my Dad's 70th birthday started off extremely stressful. I also still have not even received the refund for the first night and have to go through my credit card to get a refund for the other nights. The stress just continues. Save yourself and do not rent this house.
These guests did not actually stay at the house. There was a mixup with the cleaning crew and they had to turn the house over yet so it was in a condition not ready for them, just as any hotel room or property would not look its best if guests having stayed for a period had just left and it had not been cleaned. They did receive detailed check in instructions with the reservation confirmation email. They just did not look. They would not give me a chance to get the cleaning crew over to get the house ready and were very combative and not understanding. It is a great house as many others would attest to that is too bad they did not get us the chance to get it ready.
The property was in an excellent location and check in was easy. We were however disappointed. There is a terrible musty smell and of something worse in the bathroom. The bedding and towels were old and stained and windows and chairs patched up with tape. I don't usually give bad reviews but feel the description of the property is misleading.
