This is a simple, beautiful place to get away and reconnect with family and friends. “Lookout” is a lovely 2-bedroom cottage sitting right on the waterfront, where you can enjoy the views of crystal clear Lake Dunmore, the calls of the loons and the beauty of Vermont. Facing West, you get fabulous sunsets, visible from the screened-in porch and living room. You'll also enjoy your swimming area with diving raft, two kayaks (life jackets provided), and fishing from your dock. Take time to explore the area's hiking trails, visit the local farmers' markets, visit some antique shops or artisan cheese makers. Or, just relax and recharge. Welcome to Heaven!
Inside Lookout Cabin: Like many of the older cabins in this area, the water is supplied by the lake. We have a newly-installed double-filter +UV light purification system that renders the water potable and purer than most bottled water for purchase! Kitchen has pots, pans, coffee maker, dishes, microwave and utensils. Small TV/DVD player. Movies, books, games, cards, and stereo. Blankets and kitchen linens provided. Guests must provide own bed linens and towels.
Outside Lookout Cabin: You'll never tire of the lake -- it's clear and clean, perfect for swimming and fishing. The anchored diving raft, which you share with the neighbors, provides hours of entertainment for the kids. Your dock is a virtual outdoor living room, where you can play games, have meals, fish, or simply relax on a lounge chair. After a full day, you can wash up in the outdoor shower and then head to town for a movie. You're just 20 minutes away from the historic town of Middlebury, where there are theaters, concerts, farmers markets and summer events. Burlington, Vermont is just about an hour drive north.
Please note that this is a smoke-free property. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the grounds or in the cottage.
I grew up in Randolph, VT and my parents bought a little cabin on Lake Dunmore when I was 12. My summers were filled with rock-jumping, fishing, star-gazing and all of the other joys of being on a lake in Vermont. 30 years later, my husband and I were thrilled to be able to buy this cabin next to theirs. Blessed! (Of course, we have to rent it out in order to pay the mortgage, but it's worth it for the week or two we can be there every summer.) We hope you love it as much as we do.
Lisa Peluso purchased this cabin in 2009
"We had a wonderful week at the lake and wish we were still there - unfortunately have to go back to work tomorrow.
The cottage was great - had everything we needed. We both loved the outdoor shower, the deck and the beautiful screened in porch.
We are definitely interested in coming back again...Thanks for being so hospitable."
My wife and I had a wonderful week at this charming cottage. It's location directly on the shore of Lake Dunmore makes for great sleeping as we listened to the gentle waves lapping the shore at night. The cottage is very well equipped with books, games, TVs, kayaks, life jackets, kitchen items, etc. and there's a great dining porch with a westerly view. The two bedrooms offer very comfortable queen size beds. The location of the cottage allowed us to walk to a fabulous hike up to Silver Lake (a small mountain lake). The owners parents live in another nearby cottage and were very helpful and hospitable during our stay.
We would definitely recommend this vacation rental.
We now miss hearing the lapping of the lake against the dock and the calling of the loons, and the cheery neighborhood of the point. The cottages are in close proximity and Lisa's parents and other neighbors are part of the pleasure of the place. That said, everyone is respectful of the need or desire for privacy and quiet so there's a nice balance. The cottage is classic 1940s, but also clean, fresh and attractive, with comfortable mattresses and plenty of amenities, from Red Sox broadcasts via NESN to a well-outfitted kitchen. Highly recommended
Just spent a week at Lookout Cabin on Lake Dunmore. The cabin is cozy and efficient and right on the water- perfect for a relaxing. Screened porch adds tons of living space and the dock becomes another living room- providing easy access to swimming and kayaking or viewing the sunset. Close to Middlebury and other attractions but comfortable enough to just stay put all week! Nice new spacious outdoor shower. Owner Lisa is easy to work with- answered questions immediately and we received our damage deposit back right away. Would not hesitate to rent this cabin again. Already dreaming about future summers.
This little rustic gem, virtually ON the water, provided the two of us with a calming week of swimming (the water was surprisingly warm for June), kayaking, grilling, hiking, painting, Scrabble, and exploring (an exhibit of rare Edward Hopper Vermont watercolors at nearby Middlebury College was a bonus). Friendly neighbors (the owner's parents, no less) supplied simple socializing and homemade pie. The cabin is well-stocked for cooking, game-playing, even TV and DVD gazing on cloudy days, ,and nicely landscaped; however be forewarned that this place is best for a single couple (perhaps with a toddler or two. Highly recommended for a few-frills, meditative getaway.
I have stayed in similar cabins in Vermont when I was a teenager. This was even better. The listing accurately describes the property- there were no surprises and the owner was easy to work with and honest. Cabins like this have minor maintenance issues due to age and location which I had no problem assisting with for a vacation at a great price and location.
The cabin was clean and not having to bring our own water a plus. The mattresses were comfortable- not too firm or soft. Plus not having to clean was a great, we could focus on packing instead of cleaning. The out door shower was refreshing, reminiscent of out door showers I've used on the Outer Banks.
Lake Dunmore was beautiful, the water clear enough to the see under the surface. Our eight year old had a great time swimming out to the diving platform, fishing from the dock and learning how to kayak. The neighbors were very friendly.
We also enjoyed many other local attractions- we went on a short hike near Mt. Moosaloo to the falls. We visited Middlebury and enjoyed the UVM Morgan Horse farm, the falls, the book stores, the Wood toy store, and VT organic Soap outlet. Fort Ticonderoga is about an hour away with a ferry ride. There is a lot of Revolutionary War history in the area.
We also enjoyed buying local fresh produce at the farmers stand down the road. The sweet corn fresh from the field in August is delicious.
If you bring children pack your own life vests which we did. Adult vests are available at the cabin. (It would be hard to stock all kid sizes in quantity.)
If you have a disability the walk from the car to the cabin could be difficult. I would inquire with the owner.
I would recommend this cabin to friends and family. We hope to return in a few years.
The online photos and description aligned with our expectations. A cute and cozy little cottage on the lake -- absolute perfection. It is clear that the owners take great pride in their cottage and had all amenities at our fingertips -- even down to the cooking spices!
The cabin had tons of visitor and attraction information, along with extremely helpful maps. The location is convenient and close to nearby attractions located in Middlebury, Shelbourne, and Burlington.
Lisa (property owner) was a pleasure to deal -- extremely quick in her responses and in the return of our security deposit. Additionally, we had super friendly neighbors who provided great local recommendations - and made us a S'mores kit when we had a craving :)
The best part of the trip was being able to hop in the kayak at any point in the day and drinking beer/wine on our private dock during sunset. The water was absolutely beautiful and we recommend this property for anyone that is looking to just get away from the craziness of life.
