We are shortly returned from our stay in this lovely condo - what a perfect spot! I have been coming to Hawaii - and Colony One, where this condo is located - for years. So far, this unit is my favorite condo there. Renting a condo is always a gamble - you never know what you're going to get - but this place was clean, roomy, and charming, with lots of local island touches. We cooked most of our own meals during our stay, so we appreciated the fully-stocked kitchen and the barbecue area by the pool, where we spent several hours grilling and making friends with other visitors.
The location can't be beat - nearby beaches and Volcano National Park are both an easy drive away, and must-sees like Pt of Refuge, Hilo, and the Kona waterfront all make great day trips. If you want to stay close to home, you can visit the gorgeous black sand beach, swim in the pool (and hot tub set in volcanic rock), golf, or take one of the many nearby hikes and beaches. This is also an amazing spot for sea turtles - we saw nine during 30-40 minutes snorkeling in the water right off the black sand beach! I highly recommend this place for a quiet getaway or any adventurous souls looking to explore the Big Island!
We've been fortunate enough to stay at Unit 52 three times. It feels like our home away from home. After staying in Kona for years, we were told about this gem. I don't know what I enjoyed most- my morning walks on the black sand beach (2 minutes away on foot) which I only shared with turtles, snorkeling there in the afternoons, or leisurely spending time on the golf course. We enjoy cooking and both the condo and the pool/deck/bbq area lend themselves to relaxing late afternoons/evenings out by the pool and spa while dinner cooks on the grill. The condo itself is very spacious and attractively decorated. Colony One is an easy drive to Kona, Hilo, Volcanos Park, South Point, and Capt. Cook's Monument. We are already booking our next trip for March!
We loved the unit, the development, and the location. The unit was very spacious and comfortable, the pool, jacuzzi, and the grounds were very nice, and the golf course is very scenic. We also loved how quiet the location was and every one was very friendly. Although hard at times to leave the comforts of the condo, the Black Sand beach and sea turtles were only a short walk away! The driving distances to South Point, Hilo, and Volcano Park were very manageable for day trips, but we were always happy to come back to our home away from home. If we go back to the Big Island, we hope that Colony One will be available again!
We stayed at this condo for three nights in order to be near the volcanoes and to enjoy the Black Sand beach. We achieved both of those objectives but would have rather stayed in Volcano Village or Hilo in the end. We decided the Black Sand Beach was great for watching the turtles but did not seem very safe for our young children to swim. The condo needs updating and was dirty in general. The kitchen appliances are old and falling apart (the dishwasher is rusting apart), the kitchen is not well stocked and what it does have is not in good condition, the furniture is falling apart and stained and the bath towels were old and stained and we were not given enough. We saw a mouse in the unit one night and left a message with the manager the next day regarding that but never heard back. It seems overpriced for the location and the state of the unit.
I spent a wonderful 8 days in a condo near the beach; Unit 52 at Sea Mountain, on the big island of Hawaii. I loved the location; every morning I could easily walk an easy path to the most beautiful beach. It was the black sand beach of Punalu'uh. I had the pleasure of seeing large sea turtles basking on the beach each time I went there. I also enjoyed a very comfortable home away from home, a very big, very comfortable bed, with a view and an ocean breeze and ocean sounds as drifted off to sleep. The kitchen was perfect for a quick meal prep; cable TV with extra channels. It was clean and in good condition. It was not too fancy, so we felt more at home. We (two women) felt very safe; never saw or heard anything that would cause us to be concerned. There is a wonderful pool, which we enjoyed on most days, when we were not off on an adventure. The weather was great, a little rain, usually at night, so it was fresh, sunny and warm the next day. Although most things we wanted to do took some driving, it was not too far to go, and we planned little adventures on the way. We especially enjoyed the Volcano state park; went there twice. There is a 100-year old Buddhist temple you can visit within 15 miles of the house. One of the best restaurants we ate at is only 8 miles away; it had delicious food, and live Hawaiian entertainment (acoustic guitar music and singing). It was a really great place to stay. I hope to stay there again soon, and I recommend it to everyone I know.
We have had the awesome privilige of staying in this property on two occasions. We absolutely loved it. The condo is super clean, and incredibly peaceful. The views of the ocean are great, and there is nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. We spent our days sightseeing (volcanos, the towns), playin golf at the great course which you can see from the grounds, swimming in the ocean two blocks away with the turtles, swimming in the pool and just hanging out in the beautiful grounds. We would also take trips into the nearby towns to partake of the great treats and sights. I would highly recommend this property. We cannot wait to return. It's so relaxing, refreshing and just plain fun!
