It is on a less populated part of the pond with untouched Acadia National Park land directly across. Long Pond is the largest lake on Mt. Desert stretching four miles. It will take you a week to see all the gems on Long Pond! Canoe to Duck Rock for a picnic. Duck Rock is a magnificent sheet of rock that cuts gradually into the lake. Perfect for swimming with all ages. You can even pick up an Acadia National Park trial up the Perpendicular on Mansel Mountain. Picnic to Rum Island and explore this beautifully situated island looking down the lake. Snorkel and find the boulders the size of rocks off its shores. It is a crystal clear fresh water lake. It is perfect for swimming, boating, and bass fishing. Kayaks, paddle boards and canoes can be delivered to your cottage from National Park Canoe Rental on Long Pond @ 207-244-5854.
The largest cottage is Windiana III. It is 75 feet from the water. The living room has a cathedral ceiling and a bubble skylight at the center of the house. The main room has a large sofa that converts to a full sleep sofa.. The main bedroom has a queen bed. The second bedroom has a full bed and the third bedroom has two twins. There is a small well equipped kitchen area and one large bathroom with a washer/dryer. This house is made for indoor/outdoor living. The deck wraps around two sides of the house and includes adirondacks, chaises, a gas grill, and dining table.
One other small studio cottage is available for an additional rental fee of $200 per night. Studio is not for rent separately from Windiana III. Windiana II is one main room with water views from all sides. It has a queen bed, wicker couch and chairs, small refrigerator, bar sink, one full bath. This room is great for a couple. The cottage has a deck and a view of the lake as well.
Enjoy the spectacular view from the decks and watch for loons and eagles. Take an early morning kayak ride while the lake is like glass. Sun and swim on the private dock and explore a fresh water lake. Canoe to Rum Island or Duck Rock for a picnic. Fish for bass and salmon. Watch the moon rise over Beech and curl up in a blanket and star gaze at night. Listen to the call of the loons and enjoy this unique property surrounded by ten acres of woods. This is Paradise!

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert as my grandmother was a Somes. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and show my work in Somesville at The Gallery at Somes Sound.
Why Owner chose Mount Desert
In 1761 our ancestor Abraham Somes settled Mt. Desert. This property came down to us from our grandmother who was a Somes. The land was originally part of an island on Long Pond. In the 1950's a causeway was built over to the island. Today this area is now called Northern Neck. The Northern Neck Road is great for walking or running.
What makes this Cottage unique
Built on a point on a fresh water lake about 75 feet from the water's edge, 12 foot decks on two sides, Private Dock for swimming. One of the best views on the lake and on Mt. Desert Island!!!

Beautiful, comfortable home on a stunning lake and property
Windiana III exceeded our expectations in every way. The modern cottage features three super comfortable bedrooms, a small but very functional kitchen and living area, and huge wrap around deck on pristine Long Pond. The cottage was exceptionally clean and stocked with all of the supplies needed for the week, including ample pots, pans, dishes, towels, beach towels washer and dryer, and more. It is clearly well maintained and cared for, and the property is breathtaking. The house is on the same property as another where the owner Diana spends the summers, and she was more than welcoming and helpful during the week with our family of four. A short walk off the deck, which includes several chairs, a table, and a gas grill, brings you to the private dock at the lake, where you can swim, paddle, fish and more. We brought paddleboards from home and landed up renting a small whaler to further enjoy the lake. Diana went out of her way to help us bring up a mooring for the rental boat right by the dock and always checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. It was about a 20 minute ride to Bar Harbor, but we did not spend much time there as the cottage was perfect and the surrounding areas were so beautiful. Southwest Harbor was about 15 minutes in the other directions, and was a great spot to go for lobsters, ice cream and a small town without the crazy crowds. We went to Acadia at various entrances (all within 20 minutes) to hike, bike, watch the sunrise at Cadillac mountain, and climb to the top of a mountain to swim in a 17,000-year-old lake---very surreal---then were able to come back in the late afternoon and enjoy the cottage. If we could have stayed longer, we would have and are already thinking about a return trip! Thank you Diana for sharing your beautiful cottage, warm and welcoming hospitality, and breathtaking landscape--hope to see you soon!
Nice remote cabin
We enjoyed our stay which is on Long Pond. It is remote which may or may not appeal to you. Seemed we were driving a lot to go to dinner, etc. This is an upscale cabin, but not very comfortable for cooking meals and hanging out at home. Wish the owners provided kayaks, but there is a place to rent from up the road. The owner was easy to work with and I did receive my security deposit back.
Great Cabin on Mount Desert Island!
We had a wonderful anniversary trip while staying at Windiana III. Highly recommended!
Very peaceful, relaxing
Great views in a quiet location away from the crowds. Owner was very helpful and accommodating
Windiana - A peaceful and beautiful escape
Windiana was the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway. We felt secluded in the woods yet had access to restaurants, shopping and more in nearby Southwest Harbor. Long Pond is gorgeous! We loved sitting by the pond to watch the reflection of the sky, mountains and trees in the still water of the morning and the beauty of the sky at sunset. The house itself is perfect with comfortable beds and all the amenities of home. The kitchen is tiny yet served all our needs. One reminder - don't forget to bring coffee filters!
Great house, perfect location and wonderful owner. Would definitely return again.
