It is on a less populated part of the pond with untouched Acadia National Park land directly across. Long Pond is the largest lake on Mt. Desert stretching four miles. It will take you a week to see all the gems on Long Pond! Canoe to Duck Rock for a picnic. Duck Rock is a magnificent sheet of rock that cuts gradually into the lake. Perfect for swimming with all ages. You can even pick up an Acadia National Park trial up the Perpendicular on Mansel Mountain. Picnic to Rum Island and explore this beautifully situated island looking down the lake. Snorkel and find the boulders the size of rocks off its shores. It is a crystal clear fresh water lake. It is perfect for swimming, boating, and bass fishing. Kayaks, paddle boards and canoes can be delivered to your cottage from National Park Canoe Rental on Long Pond @ 207-244-5854.

The largest cottage is Windiana III. It is 75 feet from the water. The living room has a cathedral ceiling and a bubble skylight at the center of the house. The main room has a large sofa that converts to a full sleep sofa.. The main bedroom has a queen bed. The second bedroom has a full bed and the third bedroom has two twins. There is a small well equipped kitchen area and one large bathroom with a washer/dryer. This house is made for indoor/outdoor living. The deck wraps around two sides of the house and includes adirondacks, chaises, a gas grill, and dining table.

One other small studio cottage is available for an additional rental fee of $175 per night. Studio is not for rent separately from Windiana III. Windiana II is one main room with water views from all sides. It has a queen bed, wicker couch and chairs, small refrigerator, bar sink, one full bath. This room is great for a couple. The cottage has a deck and a view of the lake as well.

Enjoy the spectacular view from the decks and watch for loons and eagles. Take an early morning kayak ride while the lake is like glass. Sun and swim on the private dock and explore a fresh water lake. Canoe to Rum Island or Duck Rock for a picnic. Fish for bass and salmon. Watch the moon rise over Beech and curl up in a blanket and star gaze at night. Listen to the call of the loons and enjoy this unique property surrounded by ten acres of woods. This is Paradise!

About The Owner

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert as my grandmother was a Somes. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and show my work in Somesville at The Gallery at Somes Sound.

Why The Owner chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

In 1761 our ancestor Abraham Somes settled Mt. Desert. This property came down to us from our grandmother who was a Somes. The land was originally part of an island on Long Pond. In the 1950's a causeway was built over to the island. Today this area is now called Northern Neck. The Northern Neck Road is great for walking or running.

What makes this cottage unique

Built on a point on a fresh water lake about 75 feet from the water's edge, 12 foot decks on two sides, Private Dock for swimming. One of the best views on the lake and on Mt. Desert Island!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This beautiful and spacious contemporary cabin is located in one of the most pleasant spots one can imagine--on the tip of a peninsula in a gorgeous lake on Maine's beloved MDI. You will enjoy the views of the lake and hills, untouched nature on the protected shores of Long Pond, the mature forest surrounding you, and the easy access to acadia National Park. For our three-generation family it was the perfect destination.

Stunning Views

  • 5 of 5

We had the most enjoyable stay at Windiana. We felt very relaxed and comfortable the minute we arrived until we departed . The lake views were very enjoyable with the changing of the trees and listening to the loons sing to one another. The fall weather allowed us to cook outside on the grill, canoe the lake, and enjoy the sunsets on the dock among many other great activities we had at our finger tips. We will definitely be back to stay again soon!

Peaceful stay with the Loons

  • 5 of 5

Could not have asked for a better location and stay. Tucked away in what feels like your very own forest, with the convenience of wifi and a kitchen! The house was impeccably clean and had a fantastic deck and dock. We must have spent half our stay mesmerized by the loons and fall colors on the dock. We will with no doubt be back one day! Thank you!

Perfect & serene setting on Long Pond

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location and great accommodations on Long Pond. The house was exactly as described: comfortable, well-furnished, and ideally located. The house is off the beaten path so we had quiet, saw deer, loons and osprey, but it is located close enough to everything to make outings easy. The view is priceless! I have used VRBO properties several times, but this was by far the best experience. The deck and dock were great spots for reading, star-gazing and using the included kayaks and canoe. We would certainly return.

Quiet week on MDI

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great week at Windiana III. Bottom line - Would we go back? - Absolutely! Two weeks after our visit, I am still thinking about sitting on the deck with a glass of wine, listening to the loons. The house was at the tip of a peninsula that extends into Long Lake. There is a 5+ minute drive down a single lane, 15mph gravel road to get to the house, but once you are there, you appreciate the solitude. Loons on the lake, daily bald eagle sightings, catching trout (small) from the dock, kayaking and canoeing, beautiful scenery....... The house has 3 bedrooms, and may be a little cramped inside for a large family (5+ adults), but was more than spacious for the 3 of us, plus dog! Also, there is a very large deck to spread out. Diana, our host was staying next door, so she was always available for advice or just to chat. The location is very central, with a short drive to Somesville and Southwest harbor. It is a little further to Bar Harbor (20min), but worth being away from the crowds. The kitchen is small, but well stocked. We decided to keep it simple and use the grill. A word of warning if you are going to MDI off season - everything shuts down early, so don't expect to get a pizza at 8:30pm, unless you want to drive into Bar Harbor. Internet service in the house is spotty, but we encountered that all over MDI. The lake was quiet during our stay, with just a few motor boats out fishing. Not sure about peak season, but I can't imagine it would be that different. There is a washer/dryer. Also, the house seems very handicapped accessible. Diana's dog Tucker played with our dog Tucker (T1 and T2), which, along with a swim in the lake, helped to wear him out! The water was not that cold, and I was able to get in for a while in early June. It was a very enjoyable week.

Secluded with an Awesome View

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Windiana III, with our two adult daughters and found the cabin to be very comfortable, clean with great views from the living room. Our brother and sister-in-law stayed in Windiana II which was cozy with even better views of the water. This was our first visit to Acadia and we loved it in the off season. Great, Great hiking and such peacefulness. The Owner was extremely helpful and provided an extensive list of places to see, tips on where to get groceries etc. We would certainly stay here again.

Perfect week at perfect Acadia location!

  • 5 of 5

My sister's family and ours stayed at Windiana for the week and could not have had a nicer time. The weather was perfect - warm sunny days and cool starry nights. Hiking, kayaking, and eating at the wonderful nearby restaurants made for a memorable week. Loons, eagles, and jumping fish everywhere. The owner made sure we had everything we needed and provided us with great ideas for things to do and places to go. I would go back in a minute!
