About Jon

Front of rental from the lake

Jon purchased this house in 2004

Why Jon chose Michigan

I love the area and so do my grandchildren, I built this first and lived in it while I built a house next door.

What makes this house unique

All outdoor activities, we are at the end of a private road so there is virtually no traffic, and my grandkids can play without worring about them. We adjoin the Hiawatha national forest. I love the quietness and solitude!

Fabulous family vacation at the Eagle's Nest on beautiful Brevort Lake

  • 5 of 5

This home has everything you need & a great home base for day tripping around the Eastern UP (Oswalds, Falls, Whitefish Pt, Mackinac Island, Castle Rock, Mystery Spot, etc). We fell in love with Brevort lake -rivals any of the popular Michigan lakes, minus all the crowds! This lake has many sand dunes - perfect to anchor your boat near and let the kids play. One has a huge rope swing from a tree- the ultimate playground for our 3 young children. We also enjoyed tubing and fishing. Plenty of space for groceries and supplies to cook @ home, restaurants in town were quite good too (whitefish!). Grill is downstairs near driveway. Jon was a very responsive host and answered all our email questions by calling me back quickly. He checked in with us a few times during the week to make sure everything was OK but otherwise gave us privacy. One day, we were heading out and realized our truck battery was dead. Jon came to our rescue and we were on the road in no time. There are tons of trails and smooth roads, we loved biking here. Had a bit of a cold snap during our stay, 40s at night, but Jon checked if we wanted the furnace on and started it right up. The walk to the fire pit was a little muddy, some mosquitoes (it had been rainy) so we didn't use it too much. There is a small dock by the fire pit but no posts/cleats to tie our boat to, so we used our sea eyes (we brought 2) and suspended our boat directly out from the main beach area within sight of the house. We had to get wet to get in the boat, and one person had to walk it out quite a ways to clear sea eyes and Jon's dock, especially if it was windy. We had a big storm/cold windy weather and beached our boat during that time. There are two kayaks and one canoe in great shape - the kids loved them. We brought sand toys/floats for the beach. Bringing paper products is normal for a rental and Jon kindly reminds you before your stay, also remember to bring garbage bags, any preferred hand soap, dish soap, and laundry detergent, and towels. There is a pack n play there, which we used and it was in good shape. The wooden crib looked older. There are 20+ hardwood steps straight up to get into the rental - so we were very cautious with our 2 yr old the entire week. There are many kids VHS tapes but no VCR. There is a DVD player and satellite TV. Some of us got swimmer’s itch – prevent that by bathing/drying off after swimming in shallow water. Wonderful family memories were made this week- Thank you, Jon!

Wonderful vacation!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at Eagles Nest! A week of kayaking, swimming, bike trail riding, relaxing and reconnecting as a family. We were able to see visit the Soo Locks, Taquamenon Falls, Mackinac Island and Whitefish point. Great cabin with everything we needed. Jon was a wonderful host! He was there if we needed him and let us have eagle's nest as it was our own. The only reason we couldn't say 5 stars was the mattresses were noisy and uncomfortable.

The cabin was great and the decorations we very nice. Loved the view from the deck.

  • 5 of 5

The eagle's nest was a very nice cabin. The decor was nice and loved the large deck facing the water. Spent a lot of time out there eating lunch and dinner or just watching the water. Went kayaking almost every day and on one trip we where able to see two bald eagles. The only thing that could be improved on is the back bedroom beds are old and not real comfortable. Also to get up to the main living rooms you have to go up a lot of stairs. Was a good workout going up and down.

Owner's Response: Renee, we are glad you all enjoyed your stay at the Eagles Nest. We love kayaking and looking for Eagles, and listening to the Loons. Thanks for the info on the beds as they are in our plans to update to Queen beds before next season. There are some stairs, but that's what gives us that breath taking view. We hope you and your family come back and visit sometime soon! Thanks for staying, the Matteson's

Absolutely Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

The lake is awesome, the Eagles Nest is beautiful and we had perfect weather. The cabin is the top level of a large house, so probably not great if anyone in your party has limited mobility. My only possible complaint would be to suggest a mattress upgrade at some point in the near future.

Great family memories

  • 3 of 5

Your home is beautiful. We loved sitting on the deck and the view was gorgeous! The beds weren't very comfortable and we had to buy a table top charcoal grill because the gas grill was in pretty bad shape. With a few comfortable changes, we would love to come back! Thanks for letting us share your home.
