Eileen and I live in Ireland, north of Dublin. As we are in our mid sixties, with our family grown-up and semi retired we lead a less stressful life and enjoy hill walking and travel. We visit Villefranche three to four times a year thanks to Ryan Air!!! We have always loved holidaying in France, having taken many 'gite' holidays with the children. We love their food, their life style, the brightness / light of the South of France and particularly the friendliness of the Nicoise.
Eamon purchased this apartment in 2005
In 2005 we were fortunate in buying 'Eclat de Couleur'. We chose this apartment because of its wonderful Sea View Terrace and its location being close to restaurants, shops and bus stops in the Old Town of Villefranche on the Cote d'Azur. It is bright and airy. The terrace is a wonderful sun trap with the enchanting colours of the Bay, the Terracotta of the Old Town roofs against the pine forests of the Cap Ferrat. It has an excellent location being a five minute walk to the shops, restaurants and bus stop and ten minutes to the sandy beach. A bus every fifteen minutes to Nice or Monaco at 1€ per trip gives you excellent opportunities for day trips.
The central location of this apartment allows us to holiday without a car, choosing instead public transport for day trips along the coast or inland exploring the valleys of Maritime Provence. Buses are cheap, clean and frequent.
The apartment is a great base for day-trips. Popular trips are Monaco, Nice for shopping, art galleries, Promenade des Anglais, the Old Town and Flower Market. Further afield there is St Paul de Vence for art, Cannes and its Croisette, Ventimiglia (Italy) for its market
A walk to Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild for its villa, formal gardens and fountains, not forgetting a coffee and a choice of the best gateaux on the Cote d'Azur is always worthwhile.
Being avid hill walkers we love to head off on the bus up to the hills behind Nice, La Turbie or Menton.
On Summer evenings another favourite is to grab the swimming gear, pick up a bottle of wine and a pizza and head for the beach and enjoy the setting sun over Mont Albion and the waves lapping the sea shore.
During the Winter season we have enjoyed classical concerts and an opera from the varied programs in Nice, Monaco and Cannes.
We loved our stay at Éclat de Couleur. It is perfectly located to explore this area of the French Riviera and the hinterland villages, being close to both bus and train public transport options, and yet very quiet and peaceful compared to busy Nice. We found living at the top of the charming old town of Villefranche absolutely delightful - walking out daily to pick up baguettes and bakery treats, as well as frequenting a few of the charming restaurants. The apartment had a breathtaking outlook over Cap de Ferat and the old town, and was very well stocked with all the essentials we could need. Eamon was very accommodating when we needed it, and punctual in responding to our enquiries. We tried the recommended Oliviera restaurant in Nice and fell in love with it, and the very passionate owners. Highly recommended! We also visited the villages of St Paul de Vence and Eze... both were charmingly beautiful and quiet in the ' off season'. Finally we enjoyed many walks - including to Villa Rothschild, and following the stunning pathway around Cap de Ferat. We would not hesitate in staying here again, and indeed hope that one day we will be able to return! Mette and Brad ( and our 3 teenagers), Perth, Western Australia
We enjoyed our recent stay at Eclat de Couleur -- the view off the terrace was gorgeous, and the apartment very clean, well equipped and comfortable.
We had a wonderful stay in Eclat de Couleur. The apartment had everything we needed and was extremely well place for the local bus route along the coast. It was also brilliantly near all the shops, restaurants, train station and beaches. The winning feature was the wonderful terrace with the most exquisite view. We do hope we can return one day.
First time at the Cote Azure and I think we hit an ideal spot to explore and enjoy the whole area. We enjoyed being able to walk to dinner, lots' of good choices. Got our baguettes and croissants from the bakery near by in the morning. There are other small shops, grocery and butcher that covered all our needs. We also enjoyed wonderful evenings on the terrace like balcony (having a pizza from around the restaurant around the corner or our own cooking), sipping wine, playing cards overlooking town and Cap Ferrat in perfectly comfortable climate. Parking can be frustrating esp. with a large car but once we had a spot we used the bus many days and with a weekly parking sticker for Euro 15 we were able to use a parking lot not far up the road. We will come back if we don't get too old climbing the steep streets and stairs of the area...and we will rent the smallest car we can find. The owner was very helpful in every way.
A couple of years ago my husband and I stayed in the one bedroom apartment, La Belle Epoque. We loved it and said we would be back. Unfortunately due to illnesses we couldn't get back till this past June. We were celebrating my husbands' life so we took 3 Grandkids and their parents to Italy on a tour and then to Villfranche to relax. Because we were seven we needed La Belle Epoque (the one bedroom) and Eclat de Couleur (the two bedroom) which were side by side apartments. Actually the only 2 apartments on the 2nd floor. From beginning to end the experience was wonderful. Eamon McCullogh, the owner was so responsive. He remembered us for the first time which made me feel good. But whether he did or not, he couldn't have treated us better. Our lease came timely, payment thought paypal was easy, he notified his manager (Susan Miller) of our arrival. She then sent an email requesting our arrival info so she could get us an English speaking driver from the Nice Airport. She met us on arrival and showed us how to use everything in both apartments. Each apartment is different. The one bedroom is decorated in more of a european style while the 2 bedroom is more modern in decor. The beds in both apartments were extremely comfortable. Both apartments were spotless. The location is terrific. You can walk to everything, the bus stop (pay 1.50 Euro to go anywhere), the train station is a 5 minute walk in town and you can go to Monaco, or the other direction and hit all of the Cote d'Azure! You don't need to bring many clothes since everything is so casual and there is a washing machine in each apartment. We usually ate breakfast in.. my husband would go to the local produce guy for fresh eggs, then the butcher for bacon, and the pastry shop for baguettes and croissants. There is nothing more you need. We would go to the beach during the day or go see the sights and then mostly bar b q on the lanai for dinner. The view from the apartment is unbelievable. You can stare at it for ever!!! I don't know what else to say except you need to go and see it for yourself. Thank you to Eamon and Susan for a wonderful trip!
We returned again this year to this lovely apartment in Villefranche. The location is ideal for exploring the Côte D'Azur. The apartment is clean and well appointed. The terrace has breathtaking views of the Bay of Villefranche and is the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. The area is quiet and close to everything, including the tourism office, the market and patisserie. We will be back.
My husband and I spent a week in this lovely apartment. Eclat de Couleur offered all the amenities we needed for a pleasant stay. We were in the middle of a three week trip and were grateful for the well-appointed kitchen so we could fix our own meals when we wished, particularly as we also like to grill and the BBQ on the terrace was great. We also made good use of the washing machine and drying rack, which worked perfectly for our needs. The bed in the master was very comfortable. The bathrooms were a good size and also well-appointed. We kept the sliding doors open to the terrace day and evening, and the indoor/outdoor effect plus the beautiful view was fabulous. We only tried the television once, and found that the Sky satellite channels weren’t working too well at that time.
The location was very convenient to both the old town and the upper town. Using the local buses for transportation was very simple and handy. We walked to Nice one day, but the bus is of course much quicker and also a convenient way to get to the supermarket at the top of the hill between Villefranche and the Old Port in Nice. We also walked to Beaulieu sur Mer and St. Jean Cap Ferat, but took the bus as well, and connected to the bus for Eze. The busses ran smoothly and relatively on schedule each time. We got bus schedules from the Tourist Office in Villefrache just down the street from the apartment.
The walk to/from the old town was short enough to be quick but long enough to get a bit of exercise after some wonderful meals at our favorite restaurants; Les Garcons, La Belle Etoile, Les Palmiers and Cosmo.
We did major food shopping at the supermarket mentioned above, and also bought basics at the Casino in the old town. We visited the baker down the street near the park every morning for fresh croissants and bread. There was also a green grocer next door to the bakery that was very good. For meat we used the butcher down the hill in the old town.
The beach in Villefranche is nice but we opted to take the short walk to Beaulieu sur Mer for a beach restaurant with lounges and umbrellas for rent.
The property manager, Sue, arranged taxis to and from the airport in Nice which was very convenient. She met us and provided an overview of the apartment. There was also a bottle of rose’ and fresh flowers which was a nice surprise. We hope to stay here again on our next trip to the area.
Villefranche is unique as a village on the French Riviera in that it has not been over-run by apartment development and commercial tourism. Remarkably, it is still an authentic French and Nicoise fishing village of 7,000 residents. Although it is in the heart of the Riviera, with Monaco on one side and Nice on the other, it is still a little village where the same families have lived for centuries and people know each other - it is a little enclave.
The site of what is now Villefranche, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has been settled since prehistoric times. Celto-ligurian tribes roamed the area and established farming communities on the surrounding hills. The Greeks and later the Romans used the natural harbour as a stop-over en route to the Greek settlements around the Western Mediterranean. It is a strategically important area where the Alps join the Mediterranean separating France from southern Europe.
Located on the exclusive Cote d'Azur, Villefranche-sur-Mer is ideally located 10 minutes east of Nice, 10 minutes from Monaco / Monte-Carlo and 30 minutes from Nice-Cote d'Azur Airport. It is served by the Nice / Menton bus which runs every 15 minutes and the Cote d’Azur rail line. It enjoys a wonderful sandy, south-facing beach and is noted for the number and quality of its restaurants. Villefranche Bay is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling and other water sports. There are many scenic walks for all levels of walkers. Popular day trips include Monaco for its Casino and Grand Prix, Nice for the Old Town, Promenade des Anglais, shopping and art galleries, Cannes for the glitz, Paul de Vence for art, Ventimiglia for its market, and the old hill-top village of Eze. Centrally located, the apartment is 5 minutes from restaurants, cafes, shops including bakeries, supermarkets, greengrocers, pharmacies, ATM, bus-stop, two car parks and 10 minutes to the beach, train station or l'Institute de Francais
The coastal walk around Cap Ferrat is a must as is a visit to Villa Rothschild and Gardens. The hill walks take you into the foothills of the Alp Maratime affording magnificent views of the coast line from Menton to Cannes.
For families there is a very popular water and theme park in Antibes. White water rafting is available in the Roya and Var Valleys.
Nice, Monaco and Cannes host many musical festivals including Nice Carnaval every February, the Nice Jazz Festival in July, ballet, opera and classical concerts during the winter months and of course the F1 Monaco Grand Prix on the last week-end in May. Golf is available at La Turbie, 10 miles by car.
