Overview

About the property

Full sized house, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, (sleeps 4)

Come relax in our two-bedroom, two-bath house with a large ocean view lanai. The house is on a quiet street that runs along the ocean and has two parks within easy walking distance on the coast. You will often find there are more walkers than cars passing below our lanai. The house is very nice, offers views of the ocean from nearly every room, and the living room features Island style furniture. The master bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed with a large walk-in shower. The kitchen is fully equipped and has everything you will need to prepare the meals which you will likely enjoy while sitting on the lanai.

There aren't that many volcanoes in the world, and how many of them can you walk on? Speaking of which, the new East Rift Zone eruption has paused and all is quiet. But have no worries if the lava begins flowing again as our home is in a safe location with some of the best air on all of the Islands thanks to the trade winds. Hawaii National Park will be reopened soon – an easy one hour drive from our doorstep.

Pahoa with its mix of cowboy and Victorian character with wooden sidewalks is close by and has some of the best small restaurants in East Hawaii. The Maku’u Farmers Market on Sundays is close to our home and continues to thrive. While you are there you can pick up some produce or buy gifts for family and friends back home. Try some Lava Candy, local honey, and lilikoi jam.

For a special treat on Wednesday evenings you can drive past the steaming vents to Kalapana to visit Uncle Roberts Awa bar and Farmers Market. While you are there you can listen to great Hawaiian Slack Key guitar music, watch some hula dancing, and enjoy dinner choosing from the many vendors. This market is another good place to buy gifts for family and friends back home.

Hilo has old-Hawaii storefronts and offers many attractions including swimming and snorkeling at safe beaches. It has a large Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Hilo has many cultural events (such as the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and the Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival). If you have time you should check out the free Mokupapapa Discovery Center for Hawaii’s Remote Coral Reefs which is located in downtown Hilo.

There is much more to see and explore in East Hawaii — or you can just sit on the lanai, listen to the birds, watch the waves, and look for whales.

About Michael Zimmerman

We area recently retired couple hoping to move to our Hawaii home some day. Until we do so we are letting others make use of our home for their vacation. We take much pride in making our home a very comfortable place with all the amenities you could need. But you do not have to take our word alone - you can read the comments in this listing from the many renters who have stayed in our home.

Michael Zimmerman purchased this house in 2009

Why Michael Zimmerman chose Keaau

Before we bought this home we had stayed in many vacation rentals on the Islands so when we set ours up we knew what distinguished one from another. Our home is different from many in how little traffic you will see. It is not unusual to be sitting on the lanai on a lazy Saturday afternoon gazing at the ocean and not see any cars for an hour.

What makes this house unique

The windows throughout the house provides an ocean view from nearly every room in the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time on our 3 week stay. You have made some good improvements since our first stay. We went to the volcano and saw bubbling lava from the visitor center. That was exciting! I want to share with you a couple of restaurants that we really liked. Pele's Kitchen in Pahoa town was surprisingly good. They are only open for breakfast. We had some great huevos rancheros. Also Mighty Sushi near Malalama market is the only sushi in the Pahoa area and it's actually quite good. The service can be very slow, but you can call in your order ahead. An out of the way place in Hilo is Kim Yo's, a Korean deli. They have a great vegetarian sushi and delicious bento boxes among other things. The address is 399 Kawilli Street, just off the main highway. Aloha and Mahalo! (April - May 2017 - 20 days)

Gracious Hawaiian Style Living with Ocean Views

  • 5 of 5

This property is so welcoming we stayed for three additional week-ends. Just a short walk across the street and you are on the cliffs of an ancient lava flow where you can walk for miles enjoying the beauty of the crashing waves, the fresh ocean air, and the blue pacific ocean, palm trees and old growth Iron wood trees. No crowds! This is a spacious home with ocean views from almost every room. It has beautiful Pearwood floors. The master suit is large with a king bed, walk in shower and walk in closet. The kitchen is well equipped and the front lanai is wonderful for watching the ocean. We did not want to leave and yes we highly recommend it.

Simply amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd time staying at this beautiful home. It is by far our favorite. We sat out on the lanai everyday and watched the Ocean. The home is large and very relaxing. Kitchen is very well equipped and large! It is truly a home away from home! Trying to plan a return trip!

Ocean view, spacious layout, lush surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of friends that usually stay on the Kailua-Kona (timeshare) but we wanted to add a couple of days on the other side of the island. We settled on this property. Wonderful ocean view, easy walking to the cliff edges, a short distance down the road there was more open access to the cliffs. The owners were extremely responsive to any questions and were very accommodating with changes we had to make. Be aware that the house is cooled via fans (I missed the no A/C when looking at properties). That said, there are plenty of fans both ceiling and floor, but just be aware. The owners have very clear directions to the property and have things covered quite well. This was my first VRBO rental so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. These owners are organized and were wonderful to work with! We had some beautiful weather and also some "normal" Hilo weather so we really had a great jumping off spot to go exploring whether by foot or by car. The volcano and lava flows are south of the property and did not impact our stay at all!!! The home was neat, well furnished and clean.

Fantastic!!

  • 5 of 5

We will definitely be back here! It’s clean, spacious, beautiful floors and large master suite. The lanai is amazing, the view is awesome. It’s quiet with very few cars on the street and a great area for walking. The house rules are no big deal, no shoes are the way of life here in everyone’s home. Plus the master has its own entry off the lanai so you can roll your luggage right up to the room. Love love love this home!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd year staying at this wonderful Hawaiian rental, so obviously we like it here! Although the east side of the Big Island is known to have rainy days, this year it was a bit wetter than normal. However, the lanai is so large and comfortable that we were still able to sit outside without getting wet. And that's what we enjoy.....relaxing without a care in the world!

The whole house is set up for guest comfort: comfortable furniture, a well furnished kitchen (we cook almost all meals at home), good beds, etc. When we arrive the house is very clean .

Michael and Terry are very responsive to all of our requests and needs, although we must admit there isn't much for them to respond to because they've tried to foresee and provide anything guests might need to make the stay trouble free. Mahalo for another great visit!

I’m a VRBO-believer!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 6th visit to Hilo but our first VRBO experience. I am pleased to report that staying in this lovely, well-supplied home was a wonderful experience. Large rooms. Just bring your toiletries and clothes and you’ll be set. We will not stay in another hotel!

I appreciate the owners sending information related to Hilo- things to do, places to see. Communication was outstanding.

We felt like we had a very authentic island experience! Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Mahalo nui loa!

But have no worries as our home is in a safe location with some of the best air on all of the Islands thanks to the trade winds. Yet you are just a short drive from the volcanic activity and at night the orange glow can be spectacular. The Hawaii government has said they hope to soon be opening a viewing area. During the day you can drive towards nearby Pahoa and you will be able to see the gas\steam plume from Fissure 8 and the local weather it creates. This can cause it to be raining in Pahoa but sunny and dry at our home.

Pahoa with its mix of cowboy and Victorian character with wooden sidewalks is close by and has some of the best small restaurants in East Hawaii.
