This cottage is feet from the water in serene Long Cove on the Damariscotta River. The deck and hot tub face the widest part of the river (which is actually a mile-wide bay off of the ocean) and the famous Maine sunset. The deep-water dock and sun-warmed rocks provide for great swimming. Though otherwise nestled into the trees, the house has a large lawn off to one side for croquet or tossing a ball.
The cottage itself is beautifully restored - all wood inside and out - with an open floor plan and skylights in the kitchen. Pretty much all of the comforts of home are provided, including linens and a fully outfitted kitchen. Wood is stacked for the fireplace all year long.
There are a number of hiking trails nearby. The kayak rental place in town will deliver and/or pick up kayaks. You can rent in town and kayak back to the cottage; put in at Biscay Pond and kayak thru the wetlands to Bristol; or paddle to some nearby islands with public access for hiking, including one with a pair of nesting bald eagles. Or bring your bikes and peddle to Pemaquid – or to the teeny Island Grocery for a breakfast of heavenly pastries. There’s a big pot in the kitchen if you want to purchase lobsters at the co-op – or they’ll cook ‘em right up for you there. Life is good at 'Marguerite’s Cottage'…
Our family has lived in this area forever. Our granddad attended the one-room schoolhouse down the road and his father logged a good chunk of the peninsula (selling the land for a buck an acre (!) when he was done swinging his axe). So, this little slice of paradise has always been near and dear in our hearts.
Kirsten Denney purchased this cottage in 1980
It's down the road from our grandparent's home and the owner was a longtime friend. We loved the cottage and it's on about the loveliest spot on the river.
Total serenity. Feeling very close to the great outdoors while having all the amenities to make for a cozy and comfortable stay.
We just returned from a week at this lovely cottage and I can not say enough about how much we enjoyed ourselves. From the moment we turned down the private, tree lined drive, rounded the curve and saw the charming flower boxes on the cottage windows, we knew we were in for a treat. The house had everything we needed for a relaxing stay, and the owners were friendly and responsive throughout the rental process.
Here are a few features we particularly appreciated about the cottage:
(1) Everything was so CLEAN when we arrived, which made the charming decor all the more welcoming.
(2) The kitchen is super well equipped and the sky light really opens up the space.
(3) We loved the built in seating around the dining table. It was perfect for meals and games with the family.
(4) The wall of windows in the living room made it so easy to enjoy that AMAZING view throughout the day.
(5) The bathroom was really roomy and 2 sinks is always a plus. Also loved the outside shower.
(6) The extra 1/2 bath was great with 5 people sharing the house.
(7) The linens used on the beds were so soft and the king bed my husband and I slept in was the most comfortable bed EVER. So great to get a good night's sleep every night, and then wake up to that view!
(8) The hot tub was such a treat. Nothing says relaxation like sitting in a hot tub with a breeze blowing off the water, reading a good book and enjoying that view (did we mention the view!!!).
In addition to loving the cottage itself, the location cannot be beat. The view is absolutely breathtaking, with amazing sunsets. The Damariscotta River is full of so many wonderful coves and islands to explore. We rented kayaks from Mid-Coast kayak for the week (super easy - they delivered them and picked them up), and we were on the water every day - always finding a new adventure. We even saw our first bald eagle! We also loved the seal colony that setup up shop on the rocks in front of the cottage each day. Such a unique experience to paddle among them - never knowing where their little heads would pop up next. Swimming off the dock was also fun - chilly, but refreshing in the July heat.
This was our first time at this cottage and in this part of Maine and everything exceeded our expectations. We cannot wait to go back next year, maybe even for 2 weeks this time. There is just so much to see and enjoy!
This rustic Maine Cottage was very comfortable for my family of five. We were so inspired by the awesome views from inside and outside the cottage. My kids couldn't believe they got to view the seals every day by just looking out the window or standing on deck. We went to Plummer Point to hike and to the lighthouse. We also had lobster dinners twice. Once from Osiers Wharf that was scrumptious. My family was able to relax here and the hot tub made that even easier. We brought our kayaks and were able to easily get around the river and saw a Bald Eagle. Overall wonderful time with great sightseeing close by.
This property is in a great location with stunning views. The cottage itself was wonderful and far exceeded our expectations. It was neat and clean and had everything we needed. The updated kitchen was well equipped with whatever you would need for cooking. The beds were comfy and having the extra half bath was very nice! We had a fire in the fireplace and also heat if needed The hot tub was an added bonus with great views of the water. In the mornings, we could spot seal pups napping on the rocks in front of the house.
Overall, our stay was perfect. Kirsten the owner answered all of my questions in a timely manner and was very helpful. I will look forward to coming again!
Our great experience started right with our initial contact. Kirsten was extremely helpful, very quick to reply and she answered every question completely (and we had a lot of them). Upon arrival we were met by Becky who made sure we had everything we needed. The personal touch was very much appreciated.
The cottage far exceeded our expectations, it was clean, well cared for and very well appointed with all the things you would ever need. The view out of the back either on the boat shaped deck or direct from the living room or kitchen table was breath taking. We could watch the seals frolic on the rocks in the Damariscotta River day or night and this became one of our favorite things to do.
The location for us worked out perfectly it was about 60 miles to Portland and about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Acadia and Bar Harbor. There was a lot to do - from exploring the Pemaquid lighthouse to getting the freshest Loster cooked for you so you could bring it home to enjoy at Osiers Co-op (we went twice while we were there) we had great time in Maine and we loved staying at Becky and Kirsten's cottage. We highly recommend staying here if you can get a reservation. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have stayed there and met some very nice people along the way!
We had a wonderfully relaxing time at this peaceful cottage on the river. We lounged on the deck and watched sunsets, lobster boats, kayaked amidst seals and seabirds, explored nearby New Harbor and took a puffin cruise (highly recommend), enjoyed nightly fires, and hot tub soaks - all while juggling twins, a 1 year old, and 2 couples. Loved the mix of Maine rustic charm with comfortable beds, kitchen, and amenities. Owners were very friendly and helpful. I'd highly recommend staying here.
My wife and I spent a very relaxing week at this cottage and just have to say it was perfect! The cottage had everything we needed. Very quiet, clean, cozy, and comfortable. We used the fireplace several evenings and watched the sunset over the water with the sounds of lounging seals. When I think of a Maine coastal cottage, this place will always come to mind.
There was plenty of dining, shopping, and sight seeing locations within a short drive to make the location perfect.
And finally, the hosts. Becky and her daughters make the perfect hosts. Always making sure you have everything you need. Becky was so friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed speaking with her about the area.
We are definitely going back!!!
