About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Come and stay in our typical Hawaiian-style cottage just a few steps from the beach. It's a quiet beach, away from tourists and crowds. The incredible ever-changing ocean views include turtles swimming right in front of you, whales in the winter, lovely occasional rainbows, and awesome sunsets.

If you are looking for a small, newly renovated, afordable, picturesque enclave away from Honolulu, this is it. This is where people come to get away from the crowds and relax. Only 9 minutes to the historic town of Hale'iwa (site for 'Baywatch'), with unique art, shopping and restaurants, and just 15 minutes to Waimea Bay and Botanical Gardens.

The famous North Shore surf breaks are within a 15 minute drive, including Pipeline and Sunset Beach. There is a wide variety of excellent restaurants and great water sport activities right here.

For the golfers, Turtle Bay Golf and Tennis Resort is just a 30 minute drive, and Kahuku Golf just 40 minutes away.

There are no hotels in Mokuleia and almost empty white sand beaches go for miles in both directions. It is also a site for the TV Series 'Lost'. Sky Diving and Glider Rides are offered just down the street and kite-surfers will entertain you with their antics on the waves to the West at Mokuleia Beach Park.

There is a main house behind the cottage, and a small one-room unit in front, yet there's a nice yard and you have clear views of the ocean from the deck. Kids love the cottage because it's literally just a few steps to the beach, and it is safe and quiet -- except for that wonderful sound of the endless waves. You will find your stay here to be not only fun and relaxing, but even magical!

About Aurilene

We're from Northern California, and fell in love with Hawaii many years ago. We always find our stays on the island to be relaxing, revitalizing, and always filled with some unique kind of Hawaiian magic. After so many years of visiting and renting, we were finally able to fulfill our dream of buying an oceanfront home, and we're happy to be able to share it with you.

Aurilene purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Aurilene chose North Shore Oahu

We like quiet, peaceful places away from crowds, where there are very few others on the beach. You can walk for miles on the beach and encounter very few people. It's a natural, magical place.

What makes this cottage unique

There's something about staying right on the ocean that we always find to be relaxing and rejuvenating. We feel the sound of the ocean and the ocean air have a wonderful healing effect.

Beachside Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My family of six enjoyed this beautiful beachside rental this past July. To start off, this property is very clean and well maintained. The pictures don't do it justice. The house has everything you need, from cleaning supplies to having a washer and dryer, everything to make you feel at home. It's located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and the beach is literally steps away from the property. We met Rebecca, the property caretaker, and she was very friendly and sweet. My four kids enjoyed waking in the morning and walking to the beach to find tiny crabs on the shore and staying up late at night stargazing at an endless sky of tiny bright dots. Staying here definitely made it hard to leave our vacation. I highly recommend this place and look forward to returning in the future.

Nice cottage, very good location, not well managed and little interest in customer satisfaction

  • 3 of 5

Overall, the cottage is nice and in a wonderful location, but my stay was not as comfortable as I had hoped (especially in light of the amount I spent). It's in a very quiet neighborhood with great access to the beach. I also appreciated the owner's flexibility with changing my method of payment after-the-fact. The beach is quite short and the surf zone is very rocky and rough and may be challenging for little ones or those uncomfortable in the water. Recommend bringing water shoes. The surf is too rough for decent snorkeling (check out Shark's Cove up the coast). I was fortunate to see one sea turtle and experience beautiful sunsets. The kitchen is amply stocked with utensils and cookware, and the laundry machines were handy. Beds were comfy, but sofa is a bit thin. I wouldn’t recommend more than 4 staying here since the eating area is four stools and a very small table.

I didn't find this cottage as comfortable in light of the cost, the issues I encountered, and the response I received from the owners when I voiced my complaints in private. The owners did listen to my concerns, and were civil in their response, but they were unmoved by what I thought were legitimate concerns: garbage and broken toys on the property, ongoing construction during my stay, a notable ant problem in kitchen, and a feral dog on the property nearly every day. Bottom line - the owners should consider more involvement with their property managers and shouldn’t expect renter’s the bear the burden of addressing the state of their property. According to them, the onus rests with the renter for addressing all issues and insisted I should have addressed these issues with the local property managers. It states in their contract:

1. Occupant is urged to preview the property – isn’t that what VRBO is for?

2. Occupant agrees to take property ‘as-is’ and ‘sight unseen’ – that shouldn’t garbage and debris

I was disappointed by their indifference to my concerns and their general lack of interest in achieving a higher level of customer satisfaction. I feel these issues should have been handled more professionally. As for my standards - I have a military background and have spent many a night sleeping in jungles throughout SE Asia, and the deserts of the Middle East. I am no stranger to living in austere conditions. Yet, for the amount paid to the owners, the service should have been better. Perhaps I've become too accustomed to uncomfortable living.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four had a wonderful time staying here. Very private and secluded, the small beach breakers crashing over and over right in the back yard was mesmerizing. Charming little in-law cottage that was roomier that the pictures showed. If you are looking for the north shore experience, and something away from Honolulu, we highly recommend staying here. There's a very rural feel, the small town is about 15 minutes drive, and is quite lovely, with a grocery store, small shops and beachy restaurants. World famous surfing beaches are nearby, and the waves were tame in the spring when we visited (girls were able to go swimming). Drive 5 minutes to the north west edge of the island and watch the sunset.

Would definitely stay again!

Great Place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 10 days and love it. The cottage was as described. Very quiet. Just a short drive to town, and all the other beaches. We had breakfast and/or lunch on the patio, while watching the ski divers. The beach was just steps away, great for snorkeling and swimming. The views are incredible. Can't wait to return.

Highly recommend the Beachfront Cottage.

A good stay

  • 4 of 5

We spent 4 nights here. The setting was nice with a quiet neighborhood about 15 minutes drive from Haliewa. We watched gliders and sky divers daily, but did not see any sealife. Pretty choppy, so not so great for snorkeling this time, but we did use the provided snorkel gear (enough for most of our family- adults included) at other beautiful nearby beaches. Appreciated the new washer/dryer and the hammock outside. DVD player was nice, as we watched a movie from Redbox at the grocery store by Rainbow Bridge in town. This is not a new building, but it was clean and had most everything we needed.

Some things are just perfect

  • 5 of 5

It is so hard to find places like this one. My wife and I wanted to someplace quiet, simple, and by the ocean to spend our 5 year anniversary. This was it. The cottage was literally a stones throw from the ocean, and the views were incredible.

It was close enough to Haileiwa that we could run in for groceries or dinner etc..., but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful.
