Welcome to Michigan's Harbor Country!
Our cottage is perfect in any season - a great retreat for a romantic winter weekend or a summer escape from Chicago for a week near the beach. The cottage is modest. It was originally a farmhouse and raspberry farm built back in the '30s but we've rehabbed it in a modern but comfortable way to make it warm and welcoming. With a fully equipped large eat-in kitchen, it is easy to entertain and host your friends.
If you are a nature lover, you will particularly enjoy the birds and wildlife and the peace and quiet - the cottage is a delight in any season. We are on 2.5 acres and surrounded by field and trees. In winter, you can sit by the fire, watch TV, go out to dinner or cook for friends. We are a short drive to Three Oaks where there is both the Acorn Theater and the Vicker's Cinema. You can also take a five minute drive to the nearby Warren Dunes State Park for sledding or cross country skiing. There is generally plenty of snow in mid-Winter.
In Summer, we are a short walk to the nearest beach or a five minute drive to the township's own Cherry Beach. We provide bicycles, beach passes and beach chairs, all you need to take is your suntan lotion. The beaches in Harbor Country are some of the best in the entire US and virtually deserted in comparison to Chicago! We're close to many different restaurants, the Sawyer Market, antique shops and berry farms. It's a heavenly break from the noise and traffic of Chicago.
Though the cottage is on the small side with three cozy bedrooms and a nicely updated bathroom with shower, it is warm and inviting and is perfect for a group of good friends or a couple looking for a quiet break.
Keywords: Four Season Cottage - walk to restaurants and beaches. Our kitchen is equipped for the gourmet chef if you prefer to cook.
Come and share our favorite places. Lake Michigan is a casual stroll away as are numerous antique shops, art galleries and restaurants. All the sorts of things we like. The cottage is the perfect getaway from the noise and congestion of the city. We enjoy cooking for our occasional dinner parties and have a number of friends who often drop by for my Sunday morning brunch. Everything is there for you to do the same. Start your own tradition in Harbor Country.....do it at our HarbertHouse!
Larry Pyrz and Tessa Burton purchased this cottage in 2004
The fact is that we really didn't decide to purchase the property as a vacation rental. It is to be and still is our weekend getaway but with the commitments of running multiple businesses and two teenage boys going here and there, we don't get out as often as we like. It just made sense for us to make our favorite spot accessible to others who might also be looking for a taste of Harbor Country.
Our favorite experiences are watching the deer in the early evening and listening to the wind blowing through the pine trees that surround the house. We've got woodchucks in the back of the property and have an occasional coyote visit now and then. Too, there is absolutely nothing to compare with watching the stars at night or the satellites flying overhead just after sunset. If requested, prior to your stay, we will gladly produce a schedule of satellite fly-overs with a location guide to tell you where to look and when.
Last summer my family was in the process of moving to Northern Indiana and we needed a place to stay for three weeks between the selling of our old house and the purchase of the new home. For three weeks my young boys ran around in the woods behind the house and played at the beaches; we roasted marshmallows in the fire pit behind the house and played board games inside on rainy days--this is what summer is about. The cottage was clean and comfortable and artistically decorated. The kitchen is fantastic! Ideal for a family vacation. Short drive to anything you might want and yet hidden away in the woods and private. I would definitely recommend this property if you're looking for a place to kick back and relax. (I"d also recommend breakfast at Louisa's just down the block--their quiche is divine!)
My husband, two teenage boys and myself enjoyed a pleasant 3 night stay at the cottage. It had everything we needed and was convenient for everything we had planned. We did hear a few trains but it did not bother us. The house was clean and the beds were comfortable. The best perk was the pass to Cherry beach. It's a wonderful, not too crowded beach just minutes from the cottage. Thanks Larry!
The cottage is lovely. The decor is well depicted in the pictures. It's urban chic meets country bungalow. The bathroom has been recently remodeled. However, the shower reminds me of one in a 2 or 3 star hotel where I stayed in Paris, in other words very small. The bedrooms are a little small, which you can kind of tell from the photos. But if all you're planning on doing is sleeping there, and you don't have a lot of stuff they're big enough. As for sleeping, if you're a deep sleeper you'll sleep well here. If not, be advised that between midnight and 4 a.m. each night we were there, there were 2 or 3 freight trains that loudly and repeatedly blew their whistles and vibrated the house. The property is right along a railroad track. That's something to watch out for in Harbert, which I didn't realize until too late. We actually cut our trip short because we couldn't sleep and because the weather was making the lake very choppy. All in all, it's a great place but not a great location if you're a light sleeper.
We had a great labor day weekend at this cottage. Larry is a pleasure to deal with, and the place is perfect for a laid-back weekend. It's location is perfect and yet it's far enough away from the Red Arrow that you have peace and quiet (except for a few trains) and a HUGE backyard. The house is decorated beautifully and the kitchen has everything a good cook could want. We will be back many times in the years to come!
This place is great! We had our family for a week getaway at this charmer. The kitchen is well stocked and the home was just right for us and very comfortable. We enjoyed the large back yard and played baseball, frisbee and used the BBQ. Warren Dunes is 5 minutes away with a lovely beach as well as the private Cherry beach. The owner who we have not met, is particularly nice and hospitable via emails. We shall return!
We really enjoyed our time at the cottage. It is small but very nicely done inside with a lot of little extras that add convenience -- good cookware, both gas and charcoal grills, etc. It is clean and comfortable.
It is east of Red Arrow Highway which depending on time of day would make me hesitant to walk to the beach but it is a walkable distance, or you can of course drive.
lots to do in the area, Acorn Theater in 3 Oaks is a must. Fitzgeralds in Sawyer has weekly jazz and a Sat. nite dance - late. and of course the beaches.
I would recommend Cherry Beach, or Union Pier both which require driving, over Harbert beach which you can walk to but is very small and lots of stairs. Owner does have a parking pass for Cherry Beach which makes it very convenient but there are lots of stairs. Union Pier has no stairs but is further away still.
Lots of good dining in area if you prefer not to cook but this is a kitchen you can cook in which we really appreciated.
Owner was very helpful in addressing concerns.
Overall I would recommend it... probably best for a small family
