Once again...

  • 5 of 5

we stayed in Joan's cottage with ease and much relaxation. Everything is right at hand for living inside and enjoying the outside. The little place was very clean and the gardens are gorgeous. With walking distance to family, we find the rental a place of which we hope to return many times.

Clean, Comfortable Place to Stay in Albany, CA

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was clean and comfortable. It took me a day to figure out that I could use the pole in the closet to close the skylight. Many thoughtful intelligent touches. Reliable wifi. Climate controlled, which was wonderful. The set up was just perfect for 1 or 2 people. Extremely safe neighborhood, though crossing the street right before the apt can be a little challenging.

I was a little mislead by the "North Berkeley" town name in ad title, as well as one of the other reviews here that state the apartment is walkable to UC Berkeley. The apartment is a 10 minute drive to UC Berkeley. Get in your car and drive for 10 minutes. Now imagine walking that same distance with hills--steep, steep hills...NOT walkable. 10 minute drive or 18 minute bus. The apartment is in Albany, California, 2 blocks from the Berkeley border. Knowing that upfront would have given me a better idea of how far the apartment was from the sights I wanted to see.

All in all, a good experience. Andronico's Market is overpriced and nothing special. I had to return some brie cheese to them because it was rotten. Watch out for their dairy. Safeway is just as close if not closer and a much better choice.

I would definitely recommend this great apartment, especially if you have a car. Reasonably priced, clean. wonderful shops and restaurants just blocks away. Just know what you're getting into, that you can't walk to BART or UC Berkeley unless you have an extra 45 minutes to an hour to do so.

Location Plus

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at this cottage for 3 weeks, long enough to discover all its plus and minuses, and found there was nothing that was either misrepresented or contrary to all the positive reviews this rental has already received. While zoned as a garage, it is newly built as a cottage and there is nothing garage-like about it other than its elegant carriage house car doors. Given the neighborhood, parking was never a problem. It is one block far enough from Solano that this isolates it from the restaurant crowd looking for quick side street parking. and if you don't have a car, the nearby frequent 18 bus takes you to the BART stations. It has a well equipped kitchen but the proximity to the Gourmet Ghetto ( a rather insensitive name for a Progressive area, even if humor is the attempt. It is no Ghetto!) will mean that this restaurant row will be a tempting alternative. All the major ethnic foods are well represented and brutal competition guarantees that only the best restaurants that provide the best food and value will survive. The hosts are avid gardeners so the grounds are well maintained. The neighborhood is quiet with wide streets and not one of the numerous VRBO listings in the Berkeley hills which often highlight wonderful views, but almost require a car and navigating difficult narrow winding roads. Please give this property your highest consideration.

This is a wonderful place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying here. It is convenient, very quite, has all that you need to be comfortable. The reason we give 4 stars and not 5 is simply because the room is very bright which is great, but there is no real way to darken while sleeping or early in the am. This would not keep us from staying again, we just prefer to have a darker room to sleep. Otherwise, it is awesome!

Outstanding accommodations!

  • 5 of 5

This is a really exceptional vacation rental. A beautifully designed cottage in the back yard of the host's property. Full kitchen, bath (shower only), queen bed and sitting area in one spacious room. The host provided every necessity for a 10-day stay -- food prep and serving equipment, linens, iron, ample closet space, table and chairs, and a sitting room with TV/DVD player. The garden is exquisite and equipped with a table and chairs for both lounging and eating. We could walk to restaurants, grocery store, drug store and charming shops on Solano Avenue. It was truly heavenly to stay here, and a wonderful, comfortable place to land after a long trip. I hope that there will be room for us in the future, because this place will be very much in demand and likely booked solid in the years to come!
