Thinking Saint Lucia Villa? (Think Les Chaudieres!)
Keywords: Private Villa Pool Staff Beach
Our parents built this home on a promontory above the Carribean Sea on St. Lucia to take full advantage of the panoramic ocean, mountain and lush valley views and breezes. We'd love to share it with you!
Jeff Durham purchased this villa in 1968
This location is very private but a perfect spot to either do nothing but R&R or to explore every inch of the island, or some variation in between.
Les Chaudieres offers a private setting, a pool, full staff, quiet beach with great snorkeling and diving, nearby restaurants (if Christy's wonderful cooking doesn't keep you close to home!).
Third time back to the les chaudieres. This time returning with my family and 16-month-old granddaughter. The zip lining was so much fun. We rented a boat and traveled around the island . Stopping for snorkeling and lunch. Also visited Ti Kaye resort and had a spa day. Otherwise we spent every day in and out of the pool eating unbelievable meals made by Christy. After dinner we had drinks , played games , and did some star gazing . The View is breathtaking! Love that there's no TVs. The only thing we missed was air conditioning in the bedrooms. Although it was very comfortable sleeping with fans. The staff will take care of your every need. Love this place
Best vacation ever. If you are looking for a cookie cutter resort with umbrella drinks, and beach cabanas, this is not your place. If you are looking for beautiful, genuine and authentic and you can appreciate harmony with nature, then this is a place you can dream about. My only regret is that I was not one of the Durham family, who had the vision and foresight to build this beautiful place on the cliff overlooking the ocean. Christy and Martina made our stay so phenomenal. Jeff was super engaged throughout the booking arrival process. Thank you for making our family vacation one we will always treasure!
This house is a paradise! We have rented quite a few places in the Caribbean and this one was really the best to us: the charm of it with its brick walls, the sea and mountain view, the large and warm swimming pool, the lay out, the outside shower, and the people of course... I am probably forgetting many things...
The island itself is beautiful. Not so easy to discover with small kids that are easily getting car sick (another good excuse to take advantage of the house), the beaches we liked the most were 45 minute driving distance on very curvy roads. We have travelled a lot in the Caribbean and people in Saint Lucia have been friendlier than anywhere else.
The house could be tricky for families with toddlers (until 3 year old maybe). We had 2 kids 4 and 7, it was perfect but we showed them how to be careful as the house is on a hill top and the pool is not protected.
Thanks again so much for the great vacation and memories!!!
Les Chaudieres was a paradise, a place where you could totally relax and enjoy the tropical breeze, great food and beautiful scenery. What I enjoyed the most about our stay was being so comfortable in a “home.” It felt like it was our own home with a beautiful built-in pool (shaped like a fish)! The best part of the entire trip was watching our 2 teenage daughter’s laugh, giggle and interact with one another while catching frogs and lizards on the property. I definitely would go back in a heartbeat. I said that if I relaxed any more, I would be going backwards!
The house is perfect for a family and was an excellent fit for ours. Looking out over the Caribbean Ocean was spectacular! You could watch the boats as they sailed with the sun setting. On the other side of the property one could look down onto a private beach and even see tracks from a sea turtle that came ashore during the night.
In addition to SCUBA diving in Anse Chastanet we also toured the botanical gardens in Soufriere where Diamond Falls is located as well as Fond Doux which was one of the original cocoa plantations. My husband also went mountain biking and zip lining with our older daughter. We did visit the Drive Through Volcano and our daughter was able to take a mud bath. That was the only place where we felt we were one among hundreds of tourists. There was a line to get into the mud baths.
Because the home cooking was so delicious and healthy, we rarely ate out. (The key lime pie was to die for… the grilled fresh lobster and Mahi Mahi was also incredible). My favorite restaurant was Dasheen’s located in the Ladera Resort. It had a spectacular view located between the 2 Pitons.
What made this vacation so special was the combination of the untouched beauty of St. Lucia and the staff at Les Chaudieres. Christy, Paul, Martina and Bertilia all made us feel so welcomed and comfortable and enjoyed their company. Having your clothes washed everyday by Martina truly made you feel spoiled. I wanted to bring everyone back home with us, especially Christy who was able to get our 14 year-old to eat everything that was served!!!
I obtained a much deeper appreciation of Les Chaudieres when I looked through a book on its history. The “before and after” pictures of the house, property and family were fascinating. The old canons and huge earthenware vases added to its character and beauty. The personal attention from the owner, Jeff, and staff could not be beat!
We just returned from Les Chaudieres - and it was everything we hoped for and more. Our goal was to really get to know (with our three children) a new country. And Les Chaudieres was perfect. The staff made us feel at home. All reviews rave about the food/cooking - and they should. Christy, the property manager and chef, is an absolutely amazing cook who will go out of her way to delight your palate. Yes, the groceries are more expensive on the island than in the states - but they are much cheeper and better quality than eating out. This is not a resort - it is a family home - one with a rich tradition and history that you will feel when you arrive. It is "campy" - in the sense that it feels like a good friend's personal retreat / lake house. Not fancy - but comfy. If you are squeamish about an occasional bug, frog, bat or lizard - this may not be your place as it is very open air and nature will visit from time to time. Many reviewers had no problems with the bugs - we were not so lucky as the breeze died down while we were there - so we recommend taking plenty of the strongest bug spray you can find. But they did not take away from the overall experience. Other recommendations: get to know the staff; they are wonderful people and will give you a much deeper appreciation of St. Lucia and Les Chaudieres. Take a boat cruise early on your trip; Christy can arrange this for you and it will give you a great overview of spots to revisit. Do the zip line adventure in Dennery - and take your camera with you. Enjoy as much time as possible in the hammock under the old almond tree drinking a Durham standard or a rum punch. And get to know as many St. Lucians as you can; we enjoyed them all!
The place is terrific for an unwinding week. It’s right out of an architectural magazine. Jeff, the owner, was great about getting us all the info we needed. Everything went off without a hitch. Even a spot of rain now & then was easy to take, just lounging in the great room with a book.
The house is well situated for exploring Soufriere (the Pitons & mountains), much more so than staying in the north (Gros Inlet), which is less mountainous and more arid (less lush). The staff keep you well fed, assuming you do the shopping or do it yourself. There’s an IGA just north of Marigot that is surprisingly well stocked.
Do yourself a favor, and eat in very night. Christie is quite a chef, and delivers a fine creole meal in the confines of your (temporary) home. No worries about driving on windy roads after drinks/dinner. Go ahead, have another rum punch and enjoy the view! There's few restaurants I would consider anyway (Hideaway in Marigot, or Ti Kaye).
Will definitely consider coming back to this place, now that I know the lay of the land in St. Lucia. One tip: It’s a very casual place (not like Bermuda or St. Barts). Dress down, and leave expensive stuff at home for security and to fit in.
but most of all the most peaceful and relaxing trip imaginable
