Great time on the Big Island
Great time and great house for a large family like ours. reminded me of a Palm Springs motor Inn the way all the rooms opened up to the outdoor swimming pool. Quiet neighborhood and short drive to Sam Choy's that we ate at every chance possible. Thank you Tina for all your assistance and the extra mile that you went to to make sure our vacation was special. Your attention to the comfort and service made this a truly memorable and worryfree trip. Plus we loved all the geckos!!!!!!
Family Vacation 9/19/2010
This was my retirement and family vacation...this house was perfect for all of us. The house has a great layout...lots of privacy for the bedrooms. The house had everything we needed. Loved the pool and the sunsets each nite were amazing. The location was great for traveling to Kona and everywhere else.
Would definitely love to come back here again.
Great location, great home.
We very much enjoyed our five day stay at Tina's house where there was more than enough space for the six adults and two children. It was so enjoyable to eat our lunches and dinners sitting at the table next to the pool. The kitchen is very well equipped and the barbecue on the back lawn area is large. The second refrigerator in the laundry room came in handy as well.
After going to the beach everyone enjoyed a soak in the hot tub in the back. There were boogie boards, snorkels and masks and beach toys in the garage for our use. If we had had a larger group there is an entire basement with 3 beds which we could have used.
We so enjoyed our stay here and will carry fond memories with us back to California.
A GOOD FIT!
This home fit our family of 13 perfect. It is in a great location close to White Sands and Kahalu'u.
The kitchen was large and had pots, pans, plenty of cutlery, glasses, 2 coffee pots, good blender, rice cooker, electric fry pan and griddle!
All the bedrooms had ceiling fans, and there were plenty of oscillating fans to go around as well.
Bathrooms were nice with plenty of towels, washcloths and beach towels.
The house was very clean and appears to recently have had new paint and beautiful travertine tile installed in the entry, living room, kitchen and utility room (utility room also has a refrigerator, which came in handy for extra cold drinks.
There were some beach chairs, pool noodles, boogie boards, There was also a pak and play and high chair available to use. There were no fins or snorkel gear.
The WIFI is very strong. We all could log on with our phones and computers from all over the house.
We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub and pool and the ocean view goes on forever. The sunsets were fantastic.
We did notice that if we didn't take out our trash frequently, gnats and flies come fast. Tina has a sign to warn guests of this fact. We didn't have any problems and love to watch the geckos and the birds in the morning are quite a joy.
Overall this was a very well stocked and comfortable home.
We enjoyed the house very much.
We had a wonderful time in Kona. The house was perfect! We were busy with Ironman events and training up to the race on Saturday, but when we got home, it was nice to have the peace and quiet, ocean view, pool and hot tub. The kitchen was large enough for 4 of us to prepare meals and we enjoyed sitting by the pool at night. Thanks Tina!
You take the good, you take the bad
Our group of 11 adults had a great time on the Big Island, and this home played a large role in it. But there were some frustrations.
First, the good stuff. The location is great, with areas to walk in quiet neighborhoods and smell lovely flowers. This home is not walking distance to the beach, but the elevation allows for great views of sunsets and the ocean. The beds were comfortable, and the kitchen was well-equipped. We took advantage of the available beach towels and chairs and pool noodles, and really enjoyed the common spaces.
Now for the negative... We found the basement area to be unacceptable due to a strong chemical smell. Tina did not agree with this assessment, but did find other accommodations for the people who were planning on staying there. The alternate accommodations were totally fine, but we were disappointed we couldn't all be together. We also had variable hot water for the last 3 days of our stay. The hot water tank was on some sort of timer that was malfunctioning, and we only had hot water in the morning, not after our swims and hikes and other adventures. Tina was out of town during this portion of our stay, and we never found resolution to this issue. The lack of hot water and lack of responsiveness is the primary reason for the 3 star rating. As the person who found and booked these accommodations, I felt responsible for the failings of this property, and it was more stressful than it should have been.
Complaints from others regarding the indoor wildlife are valid but may just be part of living in a single family home in Hawaii. I stayed in 3 different accommodations on the Big Island during my stay, and insects were more plentiful in this home than others. Again, this may be part of the Hawaii experience, but is something that guests should be aware of. If you're phobic about bugs, you should probably stay in a hotel.
I would recommend staying in this home if you are not using the basement, are accepting of the natural state of Hawaii at times, and can roll with some punches of a property that needs a little TLC.
We honestly describe to travelers the lower level of this home is a basement with no windows. It is a beautifully remodeled extra space for groups that want to squeeze in 10-12 people at a reasonable nightly rate. It was remodeled last year with Allure flooring, new paint, new fans and AC unit. It is clean and comfortable. Many people have slept in the lower level with no problem and loved the comfortable beds..
Sometimes you cannot please 12 middle aged women, when some feel they aren't getting the nicer bedrooms upstairs.
I sent a contractor to the house to check the hot water, and he found nothing wrong. there was plenty of hot water.
There are geckos everywhere in Hawaii. This house ambience is it's open nature and living by the pool. It is a beautiful custom built Hawaiian home, not a ticky-tacky closed-in track home.
If you want to be closed in, you would need to stay in a hotel. We strive to make your trip enjoyable and if you find something amiss (within reason), we will try to correct it immediately. But please, read the description and realize this is a custom home built for Hawaii-climate--not North Dakota
Very close to all amenities. Shopping is only 2 miles downhill to Keauhou shopping center. Beaches are walking or driving distance.
