(Hello! We took a 2-year break to start our family (we now have two little boys) and to slow down the pace a bit. We are excited to announce we will be reopening July 15th, 2016!)
The path through the bamboo grove leads to Fuurin-Oka ('Wind-Bell Hill') Futon & Breakfast. Here you can step into a different world and experience the elegance and tranquility of a traditional Japanese house and garden.
If you are planning a romantic weekend or personal retreat, visiting friends or traveling for business, Fuurin-Oka is the perfect setting - quiet and secluded, Fuurin-Oka Futon and Breakfast is something out of the ordinary while in a perfect location - 4 miles from town center and ferry terminal.
The private, detached house offers a view of the Olympic mountains and is complete with its own Japanese garden, tatami mats, shoji screens, a Japanese bath and a fully stocked kitchenette.
A home-made traditional Japanese breakfast will be delivered to your door. Descriptions available on our website www.fuurin-oka.com.
Fuurin-Oka Futon & Breakfast is a unique island getaway which combines the legacy of an ancient cultural heritage, along with some modern touches to offer a memorable visit.
Renowned Island Architect Ron Konzak and his wife, Mickey Molnaire had fallen in love with Japan and wanted to bring the serenity they experienced there to Bainbridge Island. It has taken no time at all for me to fall in love with Fuurin-Oka. Since we purchased the home in 2011, we have been extremely fortunate in having the most wonderful guests - caring, open people who have brought their own positive energy and added that to Fuurin-Oka. It is a special place that attracts equally special people. We brought our chicken coop and creative touches with us, from Seattle.
We look forward to seeing you here!
Renee purchased this house in 2011
Bainbridge Island is a beautiful sanctuary, a green, carefully preserved island full of warmth and peace. We wanted to start and raise a family here and are committed to carrying on Fuurin-Oka's legacy. This is a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the wonderful city of Seattle, only a short 30-minute ferry ride away. Fuurin-Oka is a dream come true, on the property of the home we fell in love with. The stars aligned and, as an Event Planner myself, it made sense to bring some of those skills home and provide guests of Fuurin-Oka with a memorable, relaxing and one-of-a-kind experience.
Fuurin-Oka ('Wind Bell Hill') Futon & Breakfast offers a very different experience from the traditional bed & breakfast. Nestled in a grove of bamboo, the private, detached guesthouse offers a view of the Olympics and is complete with its own Japanese garden, tatami mats, shoji screens, a cedar-lined o-furo room ('the honored bath').
In the morning, a traditional Japanese breakfast is delivered to your door - special dietary restrictions are taken into consideration during preparation. The fruit trees provide figs, apples, peaches, pears, cherries and grapes in abundance.
So many wonderful memories come flooding back when I think of my stay at the Fuurin Oka. The quiet walk through the bamboo trees to the private entrance, the ceremony of removing my shoes to leave the outside world outside, the sunlight flooding through the huge windows, the warm soft smell of the Tatami floor, gazing in tranquility at the fruit tree orchard, sitting on the sunporch and listening to the waterfall in the Zen garden. Lots of nice shops and nature hikes on Bainbridge too!
We stayed at this Japanese-style bed-and-breakfast ryokan for two nights. It was the perfect start to our trip to the US, and particularly appropriate as the reason for our coming was for my wife to expand her knowledge of Japanese braiding at an international conference in Tacoma. If you like all things Japanese, or just want to experience a traditional Japanese lifestyle without having to travel to Japan then you will enjoy staying here. It was quite straightforward getting to Bainbridge Island from Seatac, although the ferry was quite busy when we arrived at the Ferry Dock in Seattle, so we had to wait 40 minutes for the next ferry.
When you arrive at Fuurin-Oka you walk through a small bamboo grove to the house, and in Japanese style remove you shoes at the entrance. I needn't describe the interior of the house as the website shows how it is. We enjoyed sitting and looking at the Japanese garden, which looks as though it was planted decades ago. A highlight is the bathroom, and there are clear instructions about what you need to do. All the accessories, bodywash, shampoo, buckets, etc are genuine Japanese products. We loved it. The futons were very comfortable.
Renee provides a wonderful Japanese breakfast in the morning. It was "ooishi". She is clearly an enthusiastic cook, using ingredients from her own garden. There are plenty of places to eat within 10-15 minutes of the house.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and, if you want to experience something out of the ordinary, you will love it too. Given the chance we would return in a heartbeat.
We stayed at Fuurin-Oka for my boyfriend's birthday: it was truly spectacular, very peaceful, and the food was fantastic. Renee and Steve are the kindest innkeepers: very friendly, accommodating and take incredible pride in providing an amazing experience. My favorite part was the bath: sitting in neck-high hot water with the window open might be the most relaxed I've been in my life.
Renee and Steve were both available when needed, and respectful of privacy. We got to tour their amazing house, and hang out with the chickens. The breakfast was spectacular, and the wee porch in the back was perfect for sitting and enjoying the sun.
Being so close to Seattle, it is the perfect weekend getaway. We look forward to coming back soon!
My husband and I stayed at Fuurin-Oka for my 37th birthday. What an awesome treat. Immaculately clean, a personal welcome, so peaceful, such fabulous food and genuine, kind hosts. We truly did not want to leave and regretted that we'd scheduled any outing during our stay. This is a unique place made even better by the lovely people who care for it.
Oh my - what a wonderful surprise! Fuurin-Oka is a retreat from the world, wrapped in beautiful gardens, with breakfast discretely delivered in the mornings. The soaking tub is wonderful & as a special treat we watched giant snowflakes slowly drifting down through the slightly open window in our morning soak. Breakfast was beautiful, the second day we got what appeared to be noodles but it was thin eggs, sliced into wide strips over a bed of vegetables, fruit, and some round ball of delicious.
I travel a lot and have learned to keep low expectations because things often do not turn out the way that I had hoped. This was not the case here, I really can't image a more personal, wonderful stay.
I suspect that Fuurin-Oka would get a great review in Japan, and to have it in Bainbridge is truly incredible. Thanks Renee!
