Drive 8 minutes on well-paved roads through eucalyptus forests and open pastures to arrive at our 'öhia-forested mauka retreat. This new lodge is located on a former Hawaiian homestead from 20's. Well known for its old growth 'öhia, this area was once a source of koa for canoes. This new lodge is solar-powered with a generator back-up and situated at the 2400 ft elevation near the forest edge. It offers cool mountain breezes, privacy, and a large open yard. A great room contains the living room, dining room and kitchen which is joined on either end with a bedroom, each with its own bathroom and large lanai. A 40 minute drive will take you to either beautiful Waimea or historic Hilo. If the weather is rainy or cloudy, you are 1 hour away from the top-rated Hapuna Beach. Closer by you will find western-style Honoka'a town, Laupahoehoe Point, The Laupahoehoe Train Museum, and the quaint 50's restaurant. Enjoy the private peacefulness and the native flora and fauna. It will be an adventure! Take a guided hike into the forest and learn its history.

Your hosts have lived next door to this property for 40 years. They are looking forward to sharing this beautiful property with you. Don is a builder and Susan is a teacher at a Hawaiian charter school. Don is available to guide nature hikes into the native forest.
The Owner purchased this house in 2008
I have known Don and Susan since before they bought this property 40 years ago and have spent time on this incredibly beautiful land over the last 4 decades. Don and Sue are two wonderful and positive people. Their bright energy permeates the Lodge the same way the sun comes through the solid bank of windows in the large main room, instantly warming the entire house. I was fortunate enough to spend nine days in the Lodge this month (Jan 2016); my second stay. The experience just gets better every time I go. The first nights were moonless. I had forgotten how full of stars the night sky is. The green pastures and the surreal color of the ocean under the cloud elicited this:
The sun, rich and warm above the green volcanic ridge, filters through the steam rising from my tea cup in the next room. Sing a song to Hamakua.
2,400 green feet above the expansive vinyl blue, to the sharp edge of the world, flat beneath the day's gathering clouds, rising white on azure.
Ginger, the first perimeter, shakes hands with the sea.
Little grass shacks and hula skirts, on the other side. What, here? Ohia de kine, brah, forest full. Every shade of green waving in its own vault of deep blue.
Don and Sue's first home on the property was on the site of the current Lodge, so it really brings back memories for me. It could not be more beautiful, nor could Don and Susan's hospitality be more welcoming. The Lodge is clean, well appointed and spacious. My luck at having their friendship for my adult life is sublime. I hope you are lucky enough to stay here and to meet them.
After returning home from a much needed vacation to the Big Island, we continue to reflect fondly on our wonderful stay at Don & Susan's rental home. We have rented many different homes on Homeaway and VRBO in Hawaii and elsewhere and have learned to depend heavily on other visitors' review comments, especially for longer stays. The great reviews this home had online caught our attention and the guestbook at the home with many more outstanding reviews made us confident we were in for a treat.
Since we were staying for 5 weeks this trip we wanted a place that would be comfortable, clean, relaxing, centrally located, conducive to working at home when needed, and spacious enough for visitors. Wow, this rental home exceeded all of our expectations! The construction of the home is very impressive and the spacious layout is just perfect for sharing with family or friends. What a perfect place to relax with family and enjoy the peaceful scenery by day and magnificent starry displays at night. Even the wet days were enjoyable as we watched the pastures and forests around blanketed with rain. We loved being within an hour of both Waimea and Hilo, and not too much further to Kona. Frequent photo trips to Waipio Valley and Laupahoehoe Point were just minutes away.
And to top it all off, we couldn't have asked for better hosts. Don & Susan are so pleasant and made us feel at home right from the start. Having lived there for decades, their recommendations took us to enjoyable places we hadn't yet experienced on other trips here. The periodic gifts of fruit, avocados, or jelly were great. And the little things like kindly offering to have our garbage taken to the transfer station, drinking water refilled, and linens washed really made a great stay even better. We had been accustomed to doing those things for ourselves in other rental homes on the Big Island but graciously accepted. Mahalo Don & Susan for a very memorable stay to our favorite vacation spot.
Dear Susan, dear Don
we've enjoyed the stay in your cosy house soooooo much! everything was clean and made with love!! we thank you for your hospitality! what a pity we had to leave after four days! we highly recommend this place to people who look for privacy, adventure, nature, startrails, ....simply: a place to feel at home!
we will never forget these days!
The lodge was tastefully equipped, large, clean and well maintained. A beautiful place in beautiful nature, absolutely recommendable.
I stayed this beautiful private house with my mom. When we first got there in the evening, it was a little chilly and different from my expectation (I was expecting a nice warm Hawaiian house). But we loved the place soon after. When my mom woke up in the middle of the first night, stars were amazingly close and beautiful that she thought it was lightening bugs. The house was very private and has everything: nice view, bbq grill outside, lanai, huge liviing space, nice kitchen setting, ipod player connected to speakers... Susan (the owner wife) provided us anything we need for the house to try to accommodate our needs. It was so nice of her. Don (the owner hus) took us to a forest tour. It was great!! I loved the place where used to be an old Hawaiian village. I and my mom felt the sacred spiritual energy there. We will definitely come back to this place! Susan and Don, thank you so much for the great stay :)
Hello all. I spent 7 days at this incredible retreat on the mountain. I was beautiful. At night, as I climbed the hill in the dark, I wondered what I would find at the top (all paved but the very end). Driving up to this house was so inviting. Lights on...mostly windows...and finding the peaceful kitchen, living room, and the bedrooms was amazing. So warm and toasty, all the comforts of home...and you can't wait to use the fully equipped kitchen! Just a short jaunt to highway 19 and close to everything you need. Enjoy the lanai to cook out on, and sit to watch the ocean every morning while listening to the birds...this place is somewhere you will not want to leave! But, what is more, the hosts, Don and Susan, cannot make you feel more like family. They are incredible. See you next year Don and Susan!! Thank you so much for allowing us this pleasure.
