A description of my much-treasured house follows but first some information on its location. Stinson Beach, population 632, is bordered by a gorgeous beach and Mt Tam State Park. People flock here on weekends and holidays because it is so close yet so far from urban life. The house is up the hill “in the village". There is some kind of magic that happens up here around 10 pm - the hills absorb all sounds but the waves. The coyotes, foxes and deer take over the streets. In short – we really have the best of it all up here on the hill but we have to do our part. Most of all respect the neighbors. Hold your parties at the beach or bars. On busy days tell your friends to leave the cars where they are and walk the 0.4 miles from the beach. And then enjoy the peaceful retreat that is so close and yet so far from the holiday crowds.
This beautiful retreat is hidden from view by a rose covered fence. Each side of the Cape Cod style house offers a unique outdoor experience. The back deck gets wonderful, warm sun during the day. Two lifeguard chairs offer a view of the waves. A nice large hot tub is perfect for relaxing after a long hike, ride or surf, or for stargazing at night. The outdoor fire pit is around the corner and looks out on a small lawn surrounded by bushes and trees. The front porch has an Adirondack loveseat for enjoying the evening light on Mt. Tamalpais.
The porch door opens into the living room. The open living area has many large windows with deck, garden, mountain and partial ocean views. The large brick fireplace is the cornerstone of the living room. The comfy, big couch is great for lounging. The kitchen area is small but well equipped with a convection oven and two dishwashers. A coffee grinder and a choice of French Press or drip cones are provided to make sure you can start your morning with a wonderful cup of coffee. Dine inside on comfy Maine Cottage chairs, or outside on the deck.
The bedroom is at the far end of the house and the sounds of the waves are the only sounds you hear. Wake to a view of the flowers and hummingbirds through the glass doors and bedroom window. Furniture in the bedroom includes a European SleepWorks king bed, rocking chair, a table with desk lamp (which is perfect for computer work or writing), two nightstands, a dresser and a large closet for your use.
The bedroom is separated from the living area by a bonus room that features a sleeping nest perfect for a child or friend. The sleeping area has its own ceiling lights for reading, and can be closed off by a curtain for privacy. The room has two closets; one contains the washer and dryer.
The bath is small but tidy. The shower has good pressure and lots of hot water.
My husband and I met at UC Berkeley many years ago. After a stint in New York, we were able to move back to San Francisco. We have a two sons who have flown the coop. We have always loved west Marin for its scenic beauty, wildlife and incredible beaches. The Stinson house has moved me closer to many of my dreams. I completed docent training at the Martin Griffin Preserve and now have the pleasure of introducing fourth graders to the wonder of the area. I look forward to the time when I can spend more of my days paddling the lagoon, hiking the trails and doing what I can to preserve this treasure. Until then, I hope to share this truly multifaceted rejuvenating home with others.
The Owner purchased this house in 2007
We always dreamed of having a place in West Marin. I love Stinson because there is so much to do and see without having to get into a car. The town is friendly and meets all basic needs. Almost everyone of any age enjoys a day at the beach. Hiking trails are right outside the front door. And I fell in love with the house. It is bright and sunny, quiet and peaceful and the hot tub makes it better than a day at the spa. I also love Pt. Reyes Station, which has become the hub of the sustainable food movement, and which has interesting, unique shops. But it is just a beautiful 13-mile drive or bike away.
The benefits of a vacation at this home are many and varied. You can experience one or all of the four S’s – sun, surf, sleep and shall we say romance. I would also add sustenance for the spirit, opportunities for socializing and if desired, exercise and challenges for the physical self. The location of the home is wonderful, but it is also a good base for exploring the San Francisco Bay Area and wine country.
My wife and I spent two nights in this comfortable cottage while hiking Mt. Tam. It is accurately described in the listing. The house is easily accessible by foot (if you don't mind climbing a hill) from the village of Stinson Beach (market, shops, restaurants, beach). While it is an older home it is very clean, with updated kitchen and bath. Very comfortable living room well furnished. There is a TV monitor and DVD but no cable or TV reception. We enjoyed the quiet. If you are desperate for the daily blab bring your Iphone --- there is Apple TV. The kitchen appears to be well-equipped, although admittedly we did not cook. King Size bed in master bedroom very comfortable. Plenty of linens and towels. The "bonus room" is appropriate for children or close family. It is necessary to walk through the bonus room to get to the bathroom from the master bedroom or the living room. After our hikes we enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub, which is shielded enough from neighbors to be clothing optional. We would definitely return here again and recommend without reservation to our friends, even if the two motels in Stinson weren't such dumps.
This is a great house that is very close to beach and town. Everything was really well done. My kids and I enjoyed our stay and will be back for sure.
My wife and I love Stinson. It's our favorite beach in Northern California, and we wanted to stay there for a few days. To be honest, we booked this house because it was the only place that was available for the time we wanted. It looked nice from the pictures and the price was fairly reasonable as well. Once we got to the house, we realized quickly this was the perfect place for us. The pictures are great, but there is so much detail that Cathy has put into the house that you can't see from the photos. It feels like a country home on the beach. You feel warm and welcome the minute you walk in. The bedroom is nice and spacious. We brought our two-year old, and he slept in the second room and was perfectly comfortable there. We absolutely loved the patio. The jacuzzi tub was great, and our son loved running around in the side yard. It was close enough to everything, well within walking distance. Our only regret is that we weren't able to stay longer. Next time we will book a longer stay for sure. And Cathy is great as well. Very laid back when it comes to what needs to be cleaned and what doesn't. Overall the process and stay was perfect from start to finish. Thanks Cathy, and we'll be staying again soon!!
This little place is just so cute and a great little getaway from it all. It's very quiet, the kind that is soothing to the soul where song birds greet you in the morning and through the day. The embrace of fragrant star jasmine and beautiful flowers surrounds this home! Perfect for two, and 1 or 2 children. The garden area is beautiful and the walk to town or the beach is easy (unless you want to take a lot of stuff, then drive down). Something folks should know is that once you're here in the town, plan to stay. I was here for a wedding and family stayed between Mill Valley and Muir Beach. The traffic on a sunny holiday weekend is unbearable (two hours to go 5 miles on the roads coming into town). Also folks need to know that cell phones just don't work, so if you have friends staying nearby, you'll have to plan to text and plan well as to where to meet, because the cell coverage is minimal at best and non-existent at worse. So check traffic conditions getting I into Stinson. Lastly, I want to mention that this place has the best hot tub I've experienced! The neck jets are amazing. I would stay at this location again and plan to stay in the neighborhood. It's a great deal!
We spent the weekend here and loved every minute! The house is beautiful and just a short walk to the beach. The yard is very special, from the outside hot tub to the fire pit . The yard is surrounded by flowers so you feel secluded and private. Inside you can sit by the fire after cooking a meal in the full-size kitchen. At night you can sleep to the sound of the ocean. It is so peaceful and quiet. We enjoyed hiking trails up on Mt. Tam, accessible from the end of the street. Lots of information if places to eat and things to do are provided for you. We would go back in a heartbeat!
This is a beautiful home, well maintained with all the amenities described and then some. Cathy has done a lovely job of making guests feel welcome by providing easy directions once the booking was compete and making herself available by phone for any questions. We stayed in February on an unexpectedly warm long weekend. The back deck was glorious as were walks on the beach and on the trails nearby (directions in the information binder provided at the house). We had our 20-year old son with us and he loved the window bed in the 'bonus room'. For anyone who stays during a high traffic time period, be aware that the roads in and out of Stinson are narrow and likely to be full of beach-goers so it may take more time than you plan to get in and out of town. As other reviewers have noted, the one store in town is well-stocked but expensive. There are large grocery stores in the Mill Valley area so plan to buy anything you need on the way to Stinson and supplement as needed in town. This was our first VRBO experience and we were incredibly impressed with Cathy's beautiful and charming home. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay!
Walk to the best beach in northern California or to the trails of Mt Tamalpais. Muir Woods is a hikeable distance. Close proximity to Pt Reyes and Olema. Easy, scenic day trips to wine country and San Francisco.
