|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
The Sanctuary Cottage is located in the heart of Carmel Valley Village. It resides on a seven acre property with established landscaping and old growth Live & Valley Oaks. Many fine restaurants are located in the village; as well as several renown wine tasting rooms. All of them are located within easy walking distance from the cottage. About half of the property is landscaped in some form and there are many paths to explore and much bird life to observe and enjoy. The large Koi pond in front of the cottage has an enchanting and sonorous waterfall to lull you to sleep or remind you of that special mountain place. Several benches are located on the property and offer varied views of the valley, pond, pool, and gardens. Bring binoculars for an up close look at the seasonal birdlife that enjoy this special environment.
The cottage relies on electric baseboard heaters, double paned wood windows, and floor and ceiling insulation to keep it's guests comfortable. The property generates it's own electricity with a PV system. The slate floors in the bathroom are electrically heated as well a the towel rack. A solar tube provides bathroom light during daylight hours and the single vanity has an enclosed hamper. Screened opening windows allow for ventilation and the sounds of birds and the waterfall to enter the cottage. The bay window in the bedroom has a cushion for sitting, reading, and enjoying the pond views. Shades operate in two directions for complete privacy, while allowing natural light into the tranquil and romantic room. Every attempt has been made to insure the guests comfort during their stay. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern conveniences to allow your creative energies to flow.
The cottage is very unique, cozy, comfortable, and peaceful. You may not want to venture far from this abode or you may wish to linger here in the evenings after a busy day of sightseeing, hiking, or attending the many special events that take place around the Monterey Peninsula. We hope you will want to return again to this tranquil setting in the future and will do are utmost to insure your stay is pleasurable.
Beverly & Ed have been lifelong residents of the Monterey Peninsula. We are stewards of the land we live on and feel blessed to inhabit this part of the world. We endeavor to make our guests feel at home and cared for without intruding into their space. We have put considerable time, effort and savings into making our beloved home what it is today. We want to share this treasure with others who have a love for nature and who appreciate the special environment we have to offer.
Beverly Sigourney, Ed Sigourney purchased this cottage in 1988
This property was originally purchased by Ed's parents, John & Mary, in the early 1950's, when this was a sleepy rural community. Things have changed considerably since then, but much of the charm remains. We love the climate, fertile soil, wildlife, trees, and mountain view that this place offers. The cottage is not pretentious but rather carefully recreated in a country style that lends itself to relaxing and taking time to smell the abundant flowers and observe the nature that resides here. We enjoy sunshine in the summer months when Carmel is often fogbound. We are close to wonderful natural attractions, while having numerous shopping, hiking, sports, entertainment, and dining opportunities within a short drive.
The main attractions in our minds, besides the cottage itself, are the surrounding garden spaces. We built the Koi pond in 2003-4 and it has 'completed' the garden for us. We enjoy spending time around it each day. Each season offers something new to see. In the winter the pond is free of lily pads and flowers and offers great reflections and wind patterns through the rock islands; in summer it is covered with lily pads and various flowers. Blooming bulbs (bearded iris, tuber roses,'naked ladies', narcissus), roses, California poppies and lupine, columbine, deciduous Valley oaks, liquid amber trees, Japanese Maples, fruit trees, etc., all have their time in the garden. The cottage is located in the heart of the garden. The pool is wonderful in the summer months (June-Aug.) and is heated with a solar blanket and sanitized with a new ozone treatment that precludes the use of chlorine. The cottage is unique and not anything like a hotel/motel experience. We welcome you to a peaceful setting, to relax and unwind from your normal cares and concerns.
Thank you for the decadent pleasures of the space. Homemade jam, local eggs,
honey, & Grandmother's dishes.....what a magical touch.....Thank you!
Beautiful property. The owners are extremely welcoming and personable. Couldn't have asked for a better stay in Carmel.
We couldn't have asked for a better weekend in Carmel Valley. Beverly & Ed made us feel so welcome and so comfortable, we didn't want to leave. They are one of the nicest couples we may have ever met. The cottage is beautiful with all the focus and attention paid to the details. It's immaculate, well built, serene and beautiful. Upon waking in the morning, we found a nicely stocked fridge for us with half & half, coffee beans, fresh baked bread and Beverly's own homemade plum jam in the refrigerator for us. My husband and I are fighting over the jam - it's sooo good! They even turned on the heated floors in the bathroom just prior to our arrival, which was a very caring touch. As you wake in the morning to windows galore you see the gorgeous, impressive, owner built Koi pond. The hard work and love that went into that project is only equally matched by the enjoyment I got out of it each morning having my cup of coffee on the water's edge. There are 2 friendly dogs and a cat on the property (outside). They are curious for a few minutes and then off in their own world. Owners and pets alike, completely unobtrusive. Just the right balance between friendly, caring, genuine, and privacy. The cottage is a short walk to town, but when you are on the property you don't feel near anyone or anything - very private. Upon our departure, Beverly and Ed sent us home with an entire bag of produce from their trees.
I'm torn between giving this place & the owners the incredible reviews they deserve or keeping it as my own hidden gem.... but it would be unfair to keep this to myself. We feel we made friends instead of "rented a room" and we will definitely rent this place again, if not simply to see Beverly, Ed, pets and pond again. Thank you for everything!
My wife and I celebrated our one-year anniversary with a long weekend at Sanctuary Cottage and had a wonderful time.
Despite the fact that we were arriving late in the evening after a long drive, Beverly insisted on waking up to greet us and show us around the cottage. Throughout the rest of our stay, she and Ed continued to be amazingly warm, friendly, and generous hosts. They happily shared their food (delicious home made jam and home grown fruit), their critters (two lovable pups and a kitty), and their lovely property with us.
Beverly and Ed also did their best to ensure that we had easy access to whatever entertainment we were interested in, from wine tasting vouchers for a local winery to complimentary access to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium (highly recommended). Carmel Valley Village is just across the road, and is packed with tasting rooms and several very good restaurants, all of which are within easy walking distance.
Both the cottage and the property surrounding it are beautiful, peaceful, and very well maintained. Inside the cottage, the kitchen is very pleasant and well equipped, the bed is very comfortable, and the heated floor in the bathroom is a luxury we now miss living without. Outside the cottage, plentiful trees, flowers, and a large (home-built!) pond with a waterfall provide a perfect backdrop for taking a walk or relaxing with a glass of wine.
We ended our five-day stay at Sanctuary Cottage happy, relaxed, and wishing that we had the time to stay for another five days.
We booked Sanctuary Cottage for a week from July 23rd through July 30 to celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary and to attend the Carmel-by-the Sea Bach Festival. Unfortunately, the devastating nearby Soberanes-Big Sur Fire started the day before we arrived. When we left on the 30th, it had grown to the largest wildfire in the US with over 5000 fire fighting personnel. The sun was obscured by smoke and ash and the air was rated unhealthy. We stayed inside the cottage as much as possible from Wednesday on. It is a tribute to the hosting abilities of Beverly and Ed Sigourney and the amenities and comfort of the tastefully renovated cottage that we stayed the full week. They are more like old-school inn keepers than short-term landlords. They take the care and safety of their guests seriously and invite them to share and enjoy their beautiful property with them. Beverly gave us several websites to follow the fire's progress and any evacuation orders and even washed the ashes off our car when we left. We also enjoyed having interesting conversations with them as well as the companionship of their two dogs. Although it was not the vacation we envisioned, we enjoyed our week at the Sanctuary and hope to return when conditions are more normal.
My husband and I spent 4 wonderful Days at the "Sanctuary Cottage" on the most beautiful peaceful property we had ever stayed on! Beverly left us all kinds of goodies, bottle of local wine, great bread, great fruit, from all the tree on property and wonderful homemade plum jam, too! The cottage was perfect and beautiful. Camel valley is Beautiful and the town is so cute with many fine wineries and restaurants...close to many great places....Carmel by the sea, Monterey aquarium,Big Sur. We had a blast! Thanks,Beverly and Ed for sharing your beautiful place!
My husband and I stayed at The Sanctuary for two nights over the 4th of July weekend. The Sanctuary and the property on which it is located look even nicer in person than in the pictures. Beverly and Ed were wonderful hosts, the most engaged we have seen in having rented through vrbo for over ten years. They are very proud of The Sanctuary and should be. Excellent decorating choices. I could just sit and stare at their beautiful Koi pond and waterfall out the living room picture window for long stretches of time - very relaxing. The best restaurants in the Valley and all of the Valley wineries are within a very short walk of The Sanctuary. Point Lobos Shoreline is also nearby and not to be missed. We look forward to returning again in the future.
Art galleries, many restaurants, theater productions, whale watching, fishing, Monterey Bay Aquarium, hiking in Point Lobos State Park- Big Sur- Garland Park, Trail & Saddle Club, movie theaters, mt. and road biking opportunities.
