This Cozy rustic Berkshire Home offers lots of charm with modern amenities for a wonderful stay in the Berkshire Mountians. We are centrally located less than two miles from Tanglewood. The house comes equipped with blankets, picnic basket, suggestions for picnic boxed food or gourmet treats along with a wheeled cooler to make your Tanglewood experience perfect. The house is a stone's throw from the Stockbridge bowl. Fishing in season, many walking and climbing trails, and lake swimming right near the house. The Town beach is only a mile drive on the opposite side of the lake. It is private for residents and as a renter you will get beach passes. Most seasons, you can hear and see a beautiful waterfall that pours down the mountain from the nearby outlet for the Stockbridge Bowl. Beautifully sited opposite the waterfall, this charming loft-style, wood home has been described as a 'treehouse for adults'.
With an open airy design, the first floor is one space, complete with small galley kitchen that is fully appointed with modern equipment and all that you will need to cook delicious meals. There is a dining area that seats four, a living room, half bath and French doors which open to a porch with a year round hot tub and sprawling backyard. Stairs wind up past two window-seats that are placed underneath a skylight, they continue to the second floor which boasts a small cozy bedroom with a full size bed, a full bath, and a large airy study with a full size futon couch.. More stairs lead to the master bedroom which has a queen bed. This top "eagle's nest" master bedroom is well lit with several windows and a small porch. It is part of the loft style open-air design but private nonetheless. This is a true artist's dream.
Midway between Stockbridge and Lenox - all the cultural and recreational attractions of the Berkshires are nearby (Tanglewood, Norman Rockwell Museum, Jacob's Pillow, Chesterwood, Berkshire Theatre Festival) as are golf, tennis, horseback riding, boating, swimming and hiking in the state forests. You can Canoe or Kayak (and swim) in the nearby lake (equipment not included) or do a short ride with kayak or canoe in tow, to other nearby lakes. There is a public boat slip a quarter mile away and Kayac and bike rentals. Wintertime recreation includes skiing at Butternut Basin, Bousquet, Catamount and Jiminy Peak as well as snow shoeing, cross country skiing and ice skating.
To make your stay more enjoyable the kitchen is stocked with teas, condiments and all the oils and vinegars you'll need for delicious salads from farm fresh markets. The lower cabinets in the kitchen and the supply closet in the downstairs half bath are stocked with paper goods (paper towels, toilet tissue) and cleaning supplies should you need them. Help yourself!
The house has central air conditioning and heating. The A/C amply cools the first two floors and ceiling fans cool the third floor.
We have high speed internet, cable TV and a high quality radio. There are two CD players and about 60 CDs with a variety of music though a leaning toward classical.
You'll find new ceramic dishes, bowels and cups and more than adequate wine and beverage glasses.
Please take a look at the video on this site for a look at the ravine that is formed by the waterfall. It wraps around one side of the property and offers a relaxing view. Lawn chairs are available on the property to give you the convenience of sitting near this overlook or in the shade of a nearby tree.
If you want a short beautiful walk without driving to one of the beautiful hiking areas enjoy the 2 mile (round trip) walk around our community on a back road that only services the lake houses.
Andy was a psychiatrist from NY who went to Harvard for his residency and stayed in Cambridge. He had this house built about 45 years ago because he loved the Berkshires and he loved Tanglewood. Holly is also from NY, born in the Bronx, and who now lives, teaches and practices psychology in the Boston area. Step-daughter Rachel is a filmmaker who lives with her wife and new baby Wiley in Los Angeles. There have also been a succession of canine family members who roamed the property. Molly was a golden, Jesse James was a springer/lab and Anvik is a 14.8 year old magnificent malamute who still visits when he's up to it. In addition to her therapy practice, Holly paints and writes. Please enjoy our spices, teas, books and CDs.
Holly purchased this house in 1970
Stockbridge Massachusetts is the perfect blend of nature and culture, old town charm and progressive ideals - whether you've come for rest and relaxation or to finish your 300 page novel on a deadline, you couldn't have picked a better place! The house is very charming and is equipped with modern amenities but is basically low key. While only 1.5 miles down the road from Kripalu and 2 miles from Tanglewood, It is extremely private and a great place to get away from it all. The cabin is located in a wooded area near the Stockbridge Bowl (main Stockbridge lake). It is off one of the back roads so it is also equipped with all the things nature brings to a house in the woods :-) In other words, keep the screen doors closed and enjoy the view.
My personal favorite is the hot tub on a cold day, but listening to birds compete with a waterfall is a close second. Staring out at the sunrise over the water as it pours through the trees is also pretty terrific as is having a dinner on the small screened in porch. There's something also really sweet and 'home-y' about the open design. The house was designed by graduates students from MIT's architecture program about 45 years ago. It has a modern 'Frank Loyd Wright' feel which is also rustic, funky and tasteful.
This house is so special! I came for a long weekend with 2 best friends to break up the monotony of winter, and I wish we could have extended our stay. We were incredibly lucky to have unseasonably warm weather (in the low 60s and sunny in February), which let us enjoy the property even more. The house itself is welcoming, unique, and immediately felt like home. It was well stocked, and for such a rustic home I was surprised by how new the appliances were. As others have said, Holly is very nice and she's quick to respond to any questions.
We spent 3 fantastic days taking nature walks, cooking, listening to music, painting, exploring Stockbridge, looking at the stars in the hot tub and generally having the best time. We're already looking forward to coming back!
This is not your average rental. Custom designed (c. 1969-ish) by an architect whose appreciation for this spot is apparent from every angle, this is a cozy, super comfortable and interesting. space with a very open flooplan, high ceilings, lots of windows and tons of light. It's not fancy, it's not high brow -- but it is a very special place. A place that inspires and heals.
The lovely, thoughtfully landscaped property abuts the edge of Stockbridge bowl and when you sit where the property meets the woods, the sounds of the waterfall, stream and birds are a mesmerizing, meditating combination. We spent a magical Columbus Day weekend here 18 months ago with family, friends and dogs and keep trying to figure out how and when we can go back!
Waking up to the sound of the waterfall was how we started each day in this Berkshire paradise. Beautiful, private property in a fabulous location! We couldn't have imagined a better home base, providing access to nature, water sports, and all the cultural venues in the area.
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful winter weekend in Holly's home in the Berkshires. The house is a very special place, and the pictures don't do it justice. Even though we came during a snow storm, we thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub (with great views), the rustic house, and the wood burning stove. Holly was extremely helpful before and during our stay. We hope to enjoy this magical house again!
For my girlfriend's birthday, we spent the weekend at Holly's home in Stockbridge. The charming nature of the house and all of the included amenities (hot tub was great!) truly made for a magical experience. The home is warm and inviting and full of interesting nooks to explore. Holly was a most gracious host and ensured that our stay was a pleasant and enjoyable one. The town of Stockbridge is quite lovely and perfectly captures that small town New England feel. The Starving Artist Cafe & Creperie in nearby Lee serves the most delicious crepes for breakfast, lunch, and dessert. For dinner options, Xicohtencatl Mexican Restaurant in Great Barrington is another must try.
As others have said, pictures simply do not do this home justice and I enthusiastically encourage a stay! Hope to return someday! Thanks, Holly!
