Durango Cabin Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, Loft, 2 Bathrooms, sleeps 6

Big year this year for our lovely cabin! New paint job this spring 2014 and now brand new decks and a new hot tub this November 2014! Really exciting to love our cabin up a little bit!

We are in an excellent area of Southwest Colorado in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. We are close to many attractions and the location of our property is an attraction in itself. We are up on a mesa secluded from all the crowds and noise. We are halfway between Durango and Silverton in the heart of the San Juan mountains. This property is a full acre in the mountains with a private hot tub and sauna. Pure luxury in a gorgeous forest. There are great views of the Hermosa Cliffs and a picture perfect mountain backdrop. We are high in elevation which allows you to escape the heat of Durango.

Spruce Mesa Cabin: This is a perfect Colorado mountain getaway! We are located in the San Juan Mountains a mile back from highway 550 atop a mesa with great views of Hermosa Cliffs. We are just 6 miles south from Durango Mountain Resort and 20 miles north of Durango. We are located less than a mile from Electra Lake. We are pet friendly, wanting you to have a great vacation with your entire family. 4-WD required in the winter season.

Accommodations: This property is definitely a cozy cabin designed for indulgence and relaxation. Make a cup of cocoa and curl up with a great book. We have a private hot tub as well as a sauna with no 'pool hours'!! We are in a secluded neighborhood with breathtaking views. This was a home until December 2009 and it still feels like a home with beautiful decor and the finishing touches you don't usually get with a rental. This would make a wonderful memory for your family and friends.

Activities: The San Juan Mountains is one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country. Sit in the hot tub on the back deck and enjoy the snow covered peaks. Summer time in the San Juan Mountains is spectacular. A hike or bike amid the wildflowers, waterfalls, and wildlife in the high country is unforgettable. There are numerous trails that will inspire you. Electra Lake is a great destination for fishing and they charge a very small fee for its use. The lake is over 6 miles long! There are many other picturesque lakes in the area for public use. Durango Mountain resort offers many family activities including an alpine slide, mountain biking, and chair lift rides. A scenic drive north to Silverton or Ouray known as the Million Dollar Highway is jaw-dropping. There are Jeep tours of mining towns, rafting, fly fishing, and the famous Narrow Gauge Railroad!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lives up to everything it promises. This is a beautiful property that the owners have obviously taken great pride in maintaining. My favorite activity was dimming the back lights, and sitting in the hot tub on the back deck with a view of your own personal planetarium.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice cabin that worked well for the three of us. We loved the location 20 minutes north of Durango in a beautiful, quiet mountain neighborhood close to a public lake, Electra Lake. We only used two of the comfortable queen beds. The home was well supplied with everything we needed. The hot tub on the deck was wonderful to come back to use after a long day. At the last minute, we had to take two dogs. Mr Zoss was understanding and worked with us. The mud room worked well for our dogs the day we rode the train. I would definitely come back and recommend to others.

Twice the Delight

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we rented this property. We brought our daughter and her roommate this time. They enjoyed having the upstairs as their domain (which comes with a private bathroom) and is greatly appreciated with two 19 year old girls! Awesome mountain cabin. Includes hot tub on the deck and a separate sauna (we still didn't use). From the side, you have a great view of the Hermosa Cliffs; minimal view of neighbors; very quiet; spacious mud room for your pets. The Zoss' provide a folder with local information which is very good (anything from activities to restaurant recommendations). Ms. Zoss called me to let me know I had left some things at the cabin and is mailing them to me. Very cozy - perfect for your Colorado vacation. Planning on going back next June. Can't wait!!!

Nice Mountain Get Away

  • 4 of 5

We were quite happy with Spruce Mesa Cabin. When we arrived we notified the owners that the dumpster was overturned by some mischievous bears. They quickly responded the next day to upright the dumpster and also to drop off a hairdryer that we requested. They were most helpful and accommodating. The cabin was clean and comfortable.

Great Location and Amenities

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is in a wonderful secluded area that is very close to Purgatory Ski Resort, giving easy access to both Durango and Silverton. The cabin is well designed and has several nice amenities including a hot tub (we didn't use the sauna). The only caveat is that you really need to ensure you bring everything you need for cooking except the dishes, pans and silverware as unlike most previous rentals there were none of the basics. All in all it was a great place to retire to after an active day of hiking, whitewater rafting, canyoneering, exploring etc..

Owner's Response: We supply a full kitchen stocked full with a blender, crock pot, vue coffee maker with coffee provided as well as a traditional coffee maker, baking pans, measuring cups, etc. Lots of stuff! So I assume you are referring to actual food and that is correct. We do not supply condiments, spices, oil, butter, etc. It is too difficult for a cleaner to have to manage stocking things like that, checking expiration dates, cleaning bottles, etc. so we do not keep leftovers from previous guests at our property. You get an empty, clean refrigerator. It is in the rental contract that we supply only toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, dish soap, and hand soap. All toiletries and food items are up to you to supply of your favorite brands to enjoy on your vacation. There is a country store nearby for any basic item you may need.

Wonderful House in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying in this house while visiting the Durango/Silverton area. After a day of activities, we looked forward to relaxing in the hot tub in the evening when the air temperature dropped. We happened to stay when the southwest was suffering from a major heatwave. Daytime temps were in the mid to upper 90's in the afternoon, but dropped quickly as the sun was setting. Didn't use the sauna as it was just too hot for summer, more appropriate for the other 3 seasons in my opinion.

The panoramic views couldn't be beat, especially in the early morning. The grill on the back deck came in handy for making some meals in the evening. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area as well.

Steve and Roxanne were easy to work with and responded to emails and phone calls promptly. There are plenty of pamphlets in the house recommending a number of activities to choose from in the area.

A couple of notes for families staying here: the description of the property states there were some DVD's, however I never found any. The house has a good wifi system, so we brought our Roku system to stream movies or shows in the evening. The satellite TV channel selection is adequate also.

The kitchen supplies were more than sufficient for cooking on the stove top or grill, although some more steak knives would come in handy.

This place is perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 2 kids, and our dog stayed here for almost a week and had a wonderful time. This house is located in a great spot. Secluded but yet close enough to anything in the area you want to do. We highly recommend this house to any family planning a Durango vacation. We will definitely come back!

Map

Car: necessary

The resort is still at 8,800 feet elevation making it usually 10 degrees F cooler than Durango and offers a cool alpine escape from the summer heat.

Ski: Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) prides itself for being a family friendly resort for Alpine skiing and is a short 6 mile drive. Snowboarding, Alpine skiing, and even ski biking are available. The mountain has lots to offer all levels of skiers and DMR does an outstanding job of having plenty of staff to make a safe, family environment. Outstanding Nordic skiing is available across the highway from the resort. Breathtaking views. There are many guide services offering snowmobile, snocat, and sleigh ride experiences.
