This is a typical Parisian studio with stone walls and exposed beams. It is located on the French first floor (American 2nd floor) of a 16th century building opposite to the metro and the UniversIty Jussieu.
The studio has been entirely redecorated and refurnished on Dec. 2009. It has all you need during your stay. Crockery, linen and towels are provided. It is very bright and overlooks the Place and University Jussieu.
The particularity of this studio is that the bed is stored at the ceiling during day time. This allows you to enjoy the entire space. At night, the bed is pulled down and it turns the studio into a big bedroom where you can relax or watch TV. The bathroom is cute and handy (hand sink, toilet, shower). The kitchen corner has all you need for a relaxed breakfast or a self catering.
The neighborhood is very lively, with lots of cafés and restaurants. There is a good bakery, a well supplied supermarket and a bio food shop at 150 meters. We also have 3 street markets.
I've lived in Paris since 1981. I realize I love Paris each time I come back from a trip abroad. I would appreciate to share my passion for Paris with you. My 2 sons are born here. If by chance, I am away, they will welcome you on my behalf. I love good food, good restaurants, cinema and architecture.
Vilay Marchal purchased this studio in 1989
The studio is very well located. It is at walking distance to Notre Dame, Saint Michel, Ile Saint Louis, Le Marais, Bastille, Panthéon etc. It is surrounded by 3 beautiful gardens : le Jardin des Plantes, les Arênes de Lutèce and le jardin du Luxembourg. With 2 metro lines and 5 buses lines, you can get anywhere in Paris easily. Typical rue Mouffetard is a few blocks away.
The hammam is near by at the mosq. Dalloyau Pastries also at the Luxemburg garden. Bertillon's ice cream is at 5 minute walk in the Ile Saint Louis. Nice restaurants from all origins. 23 arts and essais cinemas. Peaceful strolls through Paris. Reading a book at the Luxembourg near the pond. Dancing at the Seine river banks in the summer time. Having a coffee and look at the passers by.
This was my first time in Paris and my first time using VRBO and Vilay did everything to make sure that my stay was excellent. The studio is ideally located across from the Jussieu metro so there's easy access to the rest of the city if you don't want to walk. The Latin Quarter is just around the corner ... it's about a 15 minute walk to Saint Michel and Notre Dame, with plenty of cafes, patisseries, restaurants, bars and markets along the way.
The studio itself is small, but I found that it was really all I needed while traveling alone. The bed pulls down from the ceiling and is very comfortable, it's at least a queen (maybe a king) and I didn't have any issues getting up and down from the platform. I'm not much of a chef so I didn't really use the kitchen except to wash fruit that I had bought at the market but it seemed to be fully functional and there were plates, glasses, coffee maker, etc. in the closet if you needed. There was also an iron and a hair dryer which was a nice touch when I needed them. Outlet converters were key! There were two available and with the free wifi I was able to FaceTime with my family every night so they knew I was okay.
In terms of Vilay himself, even though I didn't meet him, he provided me with a wonderful experience. The first place I booked on VRBO was a scam so I was hesitant with booking another. He answered any and all questions that I had, sent me a Google earth link so I could see the surrounding area, and gave me very detailed instructions on how to get to the apartment and how to get inside. There was also a binder full of relevant information inside the apartment. Vilay was also very flexible - my flight was delayed four and a half hours, it didn't impact my check in or check out time, and when Vilay was unavailable for me to give the full deposit on the apartment to, I was able to text with his son, Aloun, to figure out something that worked.
All in all, I couldn't have picked a better apartment for the location or the price during my first trip to Paris. I will definitely rent this location again if I'm ever back in Paris.
Vilay's apartment is really as small as it looks, but the space is incredibly efficient, with every nook and cranny utilized to make it comfortable. The pull-down bed is quite fun, and very easy to move. You do need to use a step-ladder to climb in and out of it so not recommended if you're above a certain age...and there was some fear on the first night of falling off, but actually the bed is quite big and ample space. Apartment is very clean and there is now a white carpet/rug (bad idea for a rental) which we rolled up and put aside, much preferring the cleaner tile floor. The only complaint is the portable A/C - it's water compartment needs to be emptied every hour which means you can't run it through the night. It also takes a very strong person to lift it in order to empty it. Saw other complaints here about the fact the A/C is a portable model, but as Vilay explained, window units are not allowed in Paris so this is the only option (which we had no issue with). As long as you don't come when it's hot, the apartment is great - very very central and in a nice district to walk around. The metro is across the street (10 seconds) and there's a late night epicerie also across the street which was very useful.
Cozy studio is perfectly located near the lively Latin Quarter with hundreds of restaurants, bars, bakeries, cafes and within a short walk of major tourist destinations (ie. Notre Dame, Ste. Chapelle, the Louvre, etc). The apartment itself maximizes its use perfectly. The queen (or king) platform bed, which is lifted up to the ceiling when not in use and pulled down when in use, is a perfect size. When not in use, there is ample room to move around. Vilay thankfully had multiple adaptors available; those came in handy. The bathroom, although a bit small, was spotless clean and served its purpose. We didn't do much cooking other than making a quick breakfast in the mornings but it came fully equipped with the essentials. Prior to and during our stay, Vilay was more than helpful, answering emails right away and letting us know of any events happening during our stay that we should be aware of. Overall it was a great stay in this apartment, I would highly recommend it!
The apartment was perfect for my husband and me. The livingroom was comfortable and we easily sat around planning our next day or reflecting on the previous one. There were plenty of guide books on the shelves to use as resources, and Vilay was easily available had we needed any advice or help.
We didn't do any cooking, but the kitchen was fully equipped, had we chosen to do so, and there were pantry items stocked: salt, pepper mill, oil, and some spices along with coffee, hot cocoa mix, and teas. We loved the comfortable platform bed which pulled down from the ceiling when needed, and receded overhead when not in use.
We absolutely loved the location of this apartment which is in a vibrant community (school across the street) with multiple cafés and bakeries steps away. The Sorbonne, Cluny museum, Notre Dame, and Ste Chappell were all within an 8-10 min stroll, and for those places further away, the metro was across the street.
I loved this apartment! Ideal location, and perfectly appointed for its size. Every detail has been thought of, for example several of the electrical outlets have adaptors in them, so if you arrive with American cords you don't even have to think about how to plug them in. I especially enjoyed the lovely comfortable bed that lives up near the ceiling when you're not using it: maximum efficiency. And lots of daylight, as well as excellent wifi. This rental really is a great find, I could not recommend it more highly.
We arrived over Valentine's Day weekend 2015, and had a great time - we knew the apartment was going to be tiny, and it was - but so well organized and appointed! Everything had its place and we had everything we needed. The louvered bed is really neat and such a great idea for space saving... Here is our review:
Great contact with Vilay before our trip - she was incredibly responsive to all my questions. We had a small hiccup when we arrived as the housekeeper was supposed to meet us but had just nipped out. I called Vilay and the housekeeper was there within 5 minutes to let us in. She was incredibly nice, gave us a quick tour of the apartment and all the instructions for the bed as well as some advice on the grocery store and local area.
The apartment isn't just close to the Metro, it is directly across the street - you can see if from your window. This is convenient for lugging suitcases, but the stairs in the apartment building, although only one floor, are quite narrow and a bit uneven/treacherous (especially at night - we never did find the lightswitch!) So do be prepared.
The bed itself is pretty comfortable, but could benefit from some new pillows - they are a bit lumpier than we would like :) Fine for a weekend, but I'd want something better if I was there for a week. I was surprised the bed was so big - it was a nice surprise!
There is a sink, microwave, fridge, stove top and small appliances there for your use - the fridge was fine for stocking in some beer and snacks for the weekend; we didn't use the microwave or stove but they all looked fairly new and well-maintained.
The bathroom is well laid out and the shower was nice. Our only complaint (which seems to be common across Europe and not specific to this rental) was the lack of hot water. There was just enough for the two of us to have very quick showers or you'd be cursing! Good incentive to get moving in the morning though and be the first one in haha!
I would also suggest better window coverings, as the lights at the Metro station are on all night and I found it quite bright for sleeping - but again, this is specific to me :) my husband didn't seem to notice.
Vilay has a book on site with directions to the grocery store etc, plus there was an adapter for the plug which was handy.
All in all, we would definitely recommend this rental. It is a very cute, functional apartment and the location can't be beat. Would definitely stay again, thanks!!
