Owner needs to pay closer attention

  • 2 of 5

This house looks a lot nicer in the pictures than it does in real life. The home isn't being kept up very well, and it is showing its age in a number of ways. The first things we noticed are the stains on the carpet. There are notes taped to the wall asking guests to remove their shoes, but the carpet is so bad it's a wasted effort. The giant stain in the first room you see is a huge let down. A steam cleaning would deal with the problem, but I don't think the owner wants to spend the money.

The venetian blinds in the house are all broken in some way. The wand is bent and warped, the blinds don't go up, you can't tilt them etc. Each set has their own problem that make them unusable. Blinds aren't the cheapest things to fix, but I doubt they all broke on the same day. If the owner had stayed on top of them, it wouldn't be so bad.

The shower liner in the guest bathroom is mildewing, and the shower curtain is ripped and fraying. A simple fix, but I doubt the owner has looked at the guest bathroom in years. The cleaning staff should have notified him, but he's clearly using a cleaning service not meant for rentals. It's the reason he asked us to pack towels and pillows for the visit. He doesn't pay for a laundry service, so it's difficult for him to wash everything.

There are a ton of little things that need to be addressed. The back door handles are falling off, the electrical sockets in the half bath need replaced, the deck needs extensive repairs, the cinder block pit on the side of the house needs covering. Basically this house is in desperate need of a management company.

The final straw is in how the owner responded to the problems. We lost power to the Master Bedroom and Bath halfway through our stay. The owner thought it was the GFCI plug, but we reset it multiple times to no effect. The breaker panel was unavailable to us in the locked garage, and the owner was out on the lake for the weekend. The owner didn't do anything about it, and we spent 3 nights without power in the Master Bathroom and Bedroom.

Owner's Response: It takes 4 hours for cleaning, at times I’m able to clean and*remove carpet stains* on vacation some forget that this is a home, maids don’t clean carpets. I have a small plaque by the doorbell that asks folks to remove their shoes. *Blinds* The blinds are old they do however pull up and down. There is no*Cinder Pit*. There’s a raised vegetable garden covered w/plastic.*Electcal Sockets* in ½ bath. Can’t find an issue.*Back door handle* French doors leading to the hottub; they have a set screw, I’ve had to tighten that screw. *Towels and Pillows* I simple recommend pillows, I bought nearly a 100 large white towels but realized that I was washing piles of towels, maids were charging for several extra hours, when I asked folk to pack a personal towel the problem went away, there’s no*linen service*. I changed the*shower Curtain* Thursday I accidently hit one of the generators breakers which turned off power in the top corner of the home, Friday I got a call about the power suggesting the GFI. I was not on a lake but 20nm off shore anchored struggling over retuning to address the problem at a considerable cost to me. GFI did not solve the problem but, it seemed that they were okay, it was light until after 10:00 PM and both rooms had sky lighting. I realize that they had achieved breaking into my garage by sending a small person through a large Doggy door and unlocking one of the locks, this required ignoring the warning and removing the blockage getting into an area where I keep my personal belongings. Had I known they had achieved breaking into my garage I could have had whoever, push the lit garage door opener the door would have opened and they would have easily fixed it. Later I receive and email that they wanted a cash refund suggesting that I should pay him even after he had broken into my garage. Even if I had enough to refund money which I don’t, after seeing what they had done I would have change my mind. My hope is that you make your plans based on testimonials where money and refunds isnt the motivation behind their descriptive testimony’s, there are several. It’s a beautiful location and the picture are not doctored up.

It was a perfect place for our family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great experience! We had a family gathering (with my family and my new daughter-in-law's) the day after the wedding. The backyard was perfect for football, frizzby game and kids running around freely. It was memorable, just how I imagined the day to be. I would recommend bringing your own linens for the foldout beds. We brought our own pillows and for the most part towels as well. The kitchen was well equipped!

Great house and location for our family

  • 4 of 5

Rented the house for a graduation weekend. Had family fly in from out of state and it was a great location between SeaTac airport and Kirkland where the graduation was held. We had my brother and his wife and two kids, my sister her fiancé and their son, my cousin and his wife and their baby, as well as my parents, other sisters, cousin, aunt, uncle, and my grandma. One of our family members has MS and is in a wheel chair the house was convenient for her. They had a main floor bedroom and the family living room and kitchen where everyone hung out was on that floor so she was never isolated. Those who had kids had enough space in the bedrooms and it never felt too crowded for those who stayed in the house.

The house had everything we needed to cook with, the hot tub was heated and cleaned, plenty of yard space, and we even used the fire pit.

Only negative comment I have is that check-in was fairly late (4pm) which made for a longer day for those that flew in earlier out of state (like my grandma and aunt and uncle). We killed some time by going to Southcenter for lunch and then hanging out there for a bit but for my grandma it was pretty exhausting. Not only was check-in a bit later than I would have liked, but the cleaning company wasn't done when we arrived. They finished about 45 minutes late so we hung out on the back porch until they were done. So we actually didn't get settled into the house until 5pm. I would have given a 5-star if it wasn't for this.

Paul, who owns the house was really fast at responding to our messages and emails (and it was very convenient to have the Homeaway app). He really helped whenever we had questions and this really contributed positively to the overall experience.

Good thing was that we were told we can take all the time we needed checking out. We didn't have to leave early so it was nice to stay until about 2pm for my family who had later flights at 4pm.

Good for family gathering

  • 4 of 5

The house is comfortable and clean and the lawn spacious. We had 10 family members staying there and hosted a rehearsal picnic for 40 on the lawn before our son's wedding. The description says the house can sleep 25 and that may be true, but with only three toilets and two showers, that would be problematic. Also, the house is on a septic system and a larger group might encounter problems. There is no AC which is common in the Seattle area and we were there during a heat wave. Fans were provided and with windows open and many trees, we were able to sleep well.

Some members of our family toured Seattle and/or Vancouver before the wedding. A Safeway is about ten minutes away and that is where we got our groceries and deli dinners.

Perfect stay for our family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in June a few days prior to taking an Alaskan cruise with several family members and friends. The house was the prefect size and had everything we needed. The kids enjoyed all the space in the yard and easy access to the river for fishing. The adults loved the spa. The property was in a great location; close to the city to see the sights but far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet. There was plenty of kitchen supplies to make meals for everyone with ease. Great property! We will definitely keep this in mind for our next trip to Seattle.

Excellent spacious and well equipped house

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a visit to Seattle area, staying 5 nights in that house. We were a small group for the size of the house - 2 families of 4, and hosted occasionally other friends that came over, with ease.

The house itself is spacious and with everything you need. The kitchen has everything, and lots of room to work, so great for cooking for the whole gang. The yard is HUGE, and the hot tub is big and was great to have. The hiking trail from the back yard to the river is a big plus - we didn't get very far through it, since the trail had lots of fallen branches this time of year, and we had small children along.... I can only imagine in the summer that is even more fun to have.

Endless supply of towels, linens, blankets, and even additional air mattresses it seems.

The owner was very responsive and accommodating, which was another plus.

The location, Renton, is reasonably close for seeing many of the area's attraction. Though downtown Seattle is about 30-40 mins drive, with light traffic, it could be worse as traffic does get heavy. Driving up to the mountains though was a much smoother ride.

We hugely enjoyed the area, and the house itself. Will certainly consider renting it again, hopefully in a warmer season...
