About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Enjoy a private and cozy cottage for two in the beautiful wine country of Calaveras county.

The cottage is located in historic Douglas Flat, just one mile from the charming downtown of Murphys. The cottage was originally built in the 1960's as the post office for Douglas Flat and is a separate building at Harmon Gardens. The cottage has all the amenities you'll need to enjoy dining on the patio or in the cottage, including coffee pot and coffee for your first days' morning brew. Also, table setting for two, refrigerator, microwave and flat screen tv. Free Wi-Fi that works in our hills, thanks to switching to Comcast. And a super comfy Queen sized bed. New enlarged bathroom with separate toilet and sink from the shower. The shower has great water pressure and perfect height for all those tall folks. And the best part of the cottage, it's private and quiet yet only a mile to busy and hip Murphys.

Enjoy your morning coffee from the cottage deck or stone patio, watching the ever present hummingbirds sipping flower nectar. Or, stroll through the gardens with a glass of wine and enjoy the water ponds. If you're an artist, bring your easel for plein-air painting in the garden. There is always something in bloom or ready for picking at Harmon Gardens.

Nearby Murphys was named the best small town getaway by Budget Vacation Magazine, with plenty of free or nearly free outdoor activities in the area. Downtown Murphys also boasts over a dozen wine tasting rooms and great restaurants.

Enjoy the many vineyards that compliment the beautiful hills in the area or walk to 2 wineries in Douglas Flat. Travel up Highway 4 a short distance to Big Trees State Park for a fantastic outdoor hike and picnic. Bear Valley skiing is an hour away. Ironstone Vineyards summer concerts are just over the hill from the cottage and a new folk music artist venue is Twisted Oak Winery just 2 miles away. Awesome outdoor under the sky venue with reasonable ticket prices! And no traffic jam when you leave the concert. We love the concerts at Twisted Oak.

Privacy yet close to everything, come for a visit at Harmon Gardens cottage.

Much better than expected!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent four days at the Harmon's cute cottage for the July 4 holiday and could not have asked for a better experience! All of the reviews are spot on. Angela and Don have done a beautiful job with their property and the cottage. I like that we could enjoy their lovely gardens from our own little deck and patio, yet we felt like we had plenty of privacy inside and outside the cottage.

The cottage is on the street side of the property and the Harmon's home is situated in the back behind the cottage separated by a fence so we never actually saw their house. The area off our back deck looked onto a patio which we used in the mornings and evenings, a large lawn area with lots of plants and flowers, and then beyond that was Angela's studio and gift shop which is only open on a limited basis. It was closed when we were there but we were able to peak inside and also enjoy the garden areas around it.

Angela was very helpful with suggestions and answered questions about places to go which made our trip even more enjoyable since we were visiting from SoCal and not very familiar with the area. If it weren't for the questions, we might never have spoken in person. She and Don really kept to themselves.

The cottage was very well-appointed and had everything we needed. There were many subtle touches that most people might not notice but we very much appreciated them. It was clean and charming, and definitely a place we would stay again if visiting Murphys and the surrounding areas.

Thank you, Angela and Don, for your hospitality and for sharing your beautiful gardens and cottage to make it a perfect getaway!

We loved our stay in Douglas Flat. Don was very informative about the area and the cottage was exactly what we needed for a weekend getaway. Would love to return again later in the year!

Quiet and beautiful getaway

  • 5 of 5

I am a returning guest and come back because of the lovely gardens and the quiet and comfortable cottage. It's perfect for a relaxing getaway. This time, I did visit a winery (Aryel Vieux) that was within walking distance (5-10 minutes) - down the lane where the cottage is situated ("Main St" in Douglas Flat) and then out to and across the road (Hiway 4). The wines were great and they were having pre-season a reading of The Tempest for a summer production. Beautiful fall weather!

Perfect base for exploring Murphys

  • 5 of 5

The Harmons' adorable cottage (a former post office) proved a perfect base for exploring Murphys during the recent Presidents' Day Wine Weekend. The cottage is located on a quiet country road and surrounded by the owners' flower gardens. Inside is neat and tidy with a comfortable queen bed, a spacious bathroom and a small dining area with a mini fridge. The hosts were very responsive via email and text and helpfully supplied a list of their favorite local restaurants. We hope to return someday. Thank you!
