Why Doreen Zimmerman chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We have owned property on Mt. Desert Island since 1985, and we love the area. The combination of mountains and ocean is superb. There are many miles of beautiful hiking trails on the island and we have traversed them all over the years.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy the many excellent restaurants in the area.

Great location in downtown Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

We recently traveled as a family to our favorite spot- Bar Harbor. I have many happy memories of coming here as a child and when my children were small. We were last here 3 years ago to spread my parents ashes , so Bar Harbor has great sentimentality for me. We loved this getaway ! So close to everything, walking distance to the harbor, Main Street and shopping, yet easy to get in the car and drive to Cadillac mountain and other close by mountains for hiking and biking. The house is older ( at least 100 years) but well maintained and updated . Air conditioning was available and needed during this hot week in July. It fit our family ( 5 adults and 3 children) well with space for all. One queen sized bed for us, one full sized which also fit our pack n play, and one larger, open room with two twin beds and room for a twiN blow up on the floor. Large table in the dining room and kitchen table fits 5. There is a nice enclosed small backyard with a grill and large picnic table , perfect for putting our bikes in and not worrying about them! We lucked out on the weather and met up with my brother and his family who camped in nearby Blackwoods campground. 2 bathrooms were much appreciated as well as the available washer/dryer. So glad to have been able to enjoy your house Doreen, thank you! One thing lacking was the lack of ability to recycle. My son found a place by going online and bringing it there at the end of the week but it wasn't too convenient. Otherwise perfect, perfect!

Perfect location and property exactly as described

  • 5 of 5

Extremely pleased with house and the small backyard was just what we needed for two small dogs. When first going in the house first thing I noticed was how clean it was and that alone was so appreciated. Going out the door and being in the heart of Bar Harbor in 30 seconds was great. Walking the streets early evening and did not even have to get in the car. I would definitely return to this house when we get back to the area.

Couldn't ask for a better location!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time my family has stayed at the Kennebec House and I would definitely recommend it to other travelers! It is right in the heart of downtown, but it is off a side street so even with the summer crowds it is a quiet, calming place to stay. If you like to be able to walk into downtown Bar Harbor for breakfast or a cup of coffee, easily hop the Island Explorer buses to Acadia, and then return for a great dinner and stroll for ice cream, then the Kennebec House is for you!

FANTASTIC place to stay in Bar Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 5 (husband, wife and three teen-agers) and we all LOVED this property. Spacious, clean and charmingly decorated house. The location is phenomenal. We walked through Bar Harbor each day and the Shore Path. You can walk to all restaurants and the Village Green. The street Kennebec House is on is nice and quiet but you are literally directly around the corner from the main streets of Bar Harbor. We could not have asked for more in a house. 2 bathrooms were nice to have as was the A/C ... we were there in August and it did get warm. The A/C worked extremely well. Owners were very easy to deal with. Acadia is extremely close ... we rode bikes there. If we ever return to Mount Desert Island, we would definitely want to stay here again. Oh, nice movie collection and the front porch is really enjoyable for just vegging out after a busy day. Oh, it's also FANTASTIC to be right in town as parking can really be a beast in Bar Harbor. Our entire family has very fond memories of our stay at Kennebec House. We also enjoyed eating pizza from Rosalie's at the picnic table in the backyard. Oh, don't miss kayaking ... we did Frenchman's Bay and what they call the "quiet side" of the island. Both were very much worth doing! Don't miss out on Poor Boy's Gourmet ... we went there 2x during our week's stay.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you all enjoyed your stay in our home. It's great being in town - so many places to eat, or we enjoy a BBQ in the back yard. Yes, the picnic table has see it's share of families enjoying their vacation. Next time, go on a whale watching or fishing trip. We once had a gift of two tickets to fly around the island. Wow! That was an experience!

Wonderful Place in the Heart of it All

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Kennebec House for the first time and was very pleased. The home is well appointed, clean, spacious and conveniently located near the heart of Bar Harbor. It is also air conditioned, which I hadn't even considered beforehand but which turned out to be a big plus as it was in the 90s the whole week I was there. I would definitely stay at Kennebec House again and hopefully it will be available the next time I'm in Bar Harbor.

Owner's Response: Dear Michael and family, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Bar Harbor and your stay in our home. Yes, air conditioning is essential in the heat of summer! We have many times thanked ourselves for the decision to install air conditioning. Kennebec House being in the heart of Bar Harbor, one is not very far from Main street, where there are several ice cream stores! We are close to the Village Green where the Island Explorer buses take passengers (and their bikes) for free to several locations on the island.
