Why Doreen Zimmerman chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We have owned property on Mt. Desert Island since 1985, and we love the area. The combination of mountains and ocean is superb. There are many miles of beautiful hiking trails on the island and we have traversed them all over the years.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy the many excellent restaurants in the area.

Perfect location and property exactly as described

  • 5 of 5

Extremely pleased with house and the small backyard was just what we needed for two small dogs. When first going in the house first thing I noticed was how clean it was and that alone was so appreciated. Going out the door and being in the heart of Bar Harbor in 30 seconds was great. Walking the streets early evening and did not even have to get in the car. I would definitely return to this house when we get back to the area.

Couldn't ask for a better location!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time my family has stayed at the Kennebec House and I would definitely recommend it to other travelers! It is right in the heart of downtown, but it is off a side street so even with the summer crowds it is a quiet, calming place to stay. If you like to be able to walk into downtown Bar Harbor for breakfast or a cup of coffee, easily hop the Island Explorer buses to Acadia, and then return for a great dinner and stroll for ice cream, then the Kennebec House is for you!

FANTASTIC place to stay in Bar Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 5 (husband, wife and three teen-agers) and we all LOVED this property. Spacious, clean and charmingly decorated house. The location is phenomenal. We walked through Bar Harbor each day and the Shore Path. You can walk to all restaurants and the Village Green. The street Kennebec House is on is nice and quiet but you are literally directly around the corner from the main streets of Bar Harbor. We could not have asked for more in a house. 2 bathrooms were nice to have as was the A/C ... we were there in August and it did get warm. The A/C worked extremely well. Owners were very easy to deal with. Acadia is extremely close ... we rode bikes there. If we ever return to Mount Desert Island, we would definitely want to stay here again. Oh, nice movie collection and the front porch is really enjoyable for just vegging out after a busy day. Oh, it's also FANTASTIC to be right in town as parking can really be a beast in Bar Harbor. Our entire family has very fond memories of our stay at Kennebec House. We also enjoyed eating pizza from Rosalie's at the picnic table in the backyard. Oh, don't miss kayaking ... we did Frenchman's Bay and what they call the "quiet side" of the island. Both were very much worth doing! Don't miss out on Poor Boy's Gourmet ... we went there 2x during our week's stay.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you all enjoyed your stay in our home. It's great being in town - so many places to eat, or we enjoy a BBQ in the back yard. Yes, the picnic table has see it's share of families enjoying their vacation. Next time, go on a whale watching or fishing trip. We once had a gift of two tickets to fly around the island. Wow! That was an experience!

Wonderful Place in the Heart of it All

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Kennebec House for the first time and was very pleased. The home is well appointed, clean, spacious and conveniently located near the heart of Bar Harbor. It is also air conditioned, which I hadn't even considered beforehand but which turned out to be a big plus as it was in the 90s the whole week I was there. I would definitely stay at Kennebec House again and hopefully it will be available the next time I'm in Bar Harbor.

Owner's Response: Dear Michael and family, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Bar Harbor and your stay in our home. Yes, air conditioning is essential in the heat of summer! We have many times thanked ourselves for the decision to install air conditioning. Kennebec House being in the heart of Bar Harbor, one is not very far from Main street, where there are several ice cream stores! We are close to the Village Green where the Island Explorer buses take passengers (and their bikes) for free to several locations on the island.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our visit to Bar Harbor is over and we had a marvelous time!

Bar Harbor was fantastic, Acadia National Park, unbelievably beautiful and Kennebec House was just perfect for us - excellent location and truly a neat old house - cozy and comfortable with tons of character! We were just a short walk from all the activities that the town had to offer - plenty of shopping, restaurants galore, and lots of places to just sit, enjoy the ocean view and relax.

We were quite pleased that it was so easy to get into the park, as well - hop on the free shuttle, or get in the car - it didn't matter - either way we got there in a very short amount of time. We absolutely fell in love with the park views!

Our only complaint was that our vacation went by way too quickly! Thank goodness, there's always next year!

The Kennebec House has so much to recommend it that it’s difficult to know where to start.

  • 5 of 5

The Kennebec House has so much to recommend it that it’s difficult to know where to start.

How about the location? Right smack in the heart of Bar Harbor, you’re walking distance from the grocery store, the bike shop, the Post Office, the Internet café, the cinema, the pier, downtown shopping, and more restaurants than you could visit in a month. Whether you want blueberry pancakes for breakfast before your kayak tour or homemade ice cream during your afternoon hiking break or a nightcap to put a perfect day of sightseeing to bed, you can get it even if you can’t find your car keys in the bottom of your backpack.

The (free) Island Explorer buses converge in Town Square just two blocks away, so Acadia National Park is at your doorstep. The buses have bike racks, so you don’t even have to ride to the Park to ride in the Park.

How about the house itself? It’s spacious and clean and cool in the hot summer. With room for a crowd, you can vacation with friends or family without fear. Newly-renovated bathrooms bring the comforts of home to the wilderness of Mount Desert Island. Modern appliances in the kitchen will keep your root beer refreshingly cold and re-heat last night’s leftover lobster pie. Of course, they’ll also help you make your own! The washer and dryer in the basement will get Sand Beach out of your socks and freshen your bandana for another adventure tomorrow.

And what do you do when you’re too tired to move? You sit on the porch, beverage in hand, and watch the doggies romp in the enclosed yard—because doggies need a place to go on vacation, too!

Oh, and don’t forget the dedicated parking on the side. So when you do find your car keys, you can go explore the Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland without having to fight for a parking spot upon your return.

Sun’s coming up! If you’ll excuse me, I need to put air in my tires so I can climb Cadillac Mountain before the fog lifts. See you at the summit!
