About the property

Featured on the Travel Channel's Amazing Vacation Homes!

Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-clay canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. It offers full views of Red Canyon

from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances, natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes night bathing under the stars a life-time memory.

There Are No Better Black Hills Views: On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls and jutting peaks accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the west, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black”Hills, while a further gaze acknowledges, through beautiful open prairie, that Red Canyon does indeed have an end, and that Wyoming lies beyond.

You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to the most diverse wildlife population in all of the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions and Turkeys are common sightings whose perpetuation helped with your participation in the rental of Red Canyon Ranch. It is because of this reputation for such varied and protected wildlife that the Red Canyon area was chosen to host the introduction of a starter herd of Rocky Mountain sheep.

These cliff-dwelling animals are expected to migrate to Red Canyon as soon as the sub-groups go off to establish their own herds, eventually becoming a welcome addition to ever day life on the Ranch.

Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste.Nestled among the rolling hills are a multitude of quaint towns and cities, offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.

At the Founder's Cabin, you'll have thousands of acres ti explore whether hiking or horseback riding across this historic property.

The cabin is isolated and peaceful. My husband and I enjoyed the cabin very much. Mr. Farmer called to make sure that we arrived and he was a phone call away whenever we needed assistance. The cabin is located off of 11 miles of dirt roads. Even so, the cabin is a great place with a great view and we would stay here again.

Serene Cabin Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were looking for a respite that would be secluded, quiet, and far away from all the hussle and bussle of our every day lives. We love log homes and wanted to find one that was also tastefully decorated. This beautiful cabin situated on the rim of Red Canyon met all of those wants! I would first like to thank Lori L. (the owner) for visiting with me and sharing her insight on necessities to bring, the different trails available to hike and allowing our slightly early arrival time. When we arrived we were in awe of the solitude and quiet surrounding us. The cabin is, as anyone who has had the luxury of staying here knows, just as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. The bed linens and bath towels were very nice quality. The kitchen was well appointed and had the basic necessities. The living room is quaint and offers very comfortable furnishings and interesting reading material. Lori forewarned me about the distance to the grocery store; so I made sure we had plenty of everything. It was very cold during our stay, so our star gazing was from the abundance of oversized windows! Beautiful! We loved the loft area which provided an extra sleeping area and a TV with a Bose surround sound system! We absolutely would recommend this lovely get away to those who want to escape from it ALL. This will not disappoint and we hope to go back this summer. Thank You for sharing your piece of paradise with us.

Serene Retreat

The pictures don't do the home justice. Phenomenal views out every window and from the hot tub, sunrise through sunset, and then a night sky full of stars. We hiked, saw sites, made wonderful meals including a Thanksgiving feast, played games and talked, talked, and talked. I haven't slept so soundly in a long time - could be the fresh air coupled with the greatest beds and linens!!! I've already recommended the property to a couple of close friends.

We spent four days here to celebrate our 40th anniversary. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and cozy. We sat for hours just taking in the beautiful views, watching the sunsets, and enjoying the quiet. It was the perfect place to get away to.

Amazing views and so peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I'd give 10 stars if I could. Wow. Such a beautiful peaceful property and cabin. The views are amazing. Saw many mule deer along the drive and a bison herd one day (also watch for cattle on the winding road). There was a friendly jackrabbit hanging around the cabin and a lot of cute birds. Relaxing in the hot tub overlooking the canyon after hiking to Harney / Black Elk Peak was perfect.

We did mostly southern and central Black Hills sites while staying here and then stayed in the northern hills a couple nights for other sites and Devils Tower. Some of the things we did from this location include Wild Horse Sanctuary, Cascade Falls, Mammoth Site, Wind Cave, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake, Sunday Gulch, Harney / Black Elk Peak, Needles Highway, Cathedral Spires, Mount Coolidge Lookout Tower, Wildlife Loop, and Iron Mountain Road which has 3 tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore. Also the Museum at the Black Hills Institute in Hill City and some breweries and wineries.

I wish we would have spent more time exploring near the cabin - definitely hope to stay here again. We brought groceries to cook most breakfasts and grilled steaks for dinner. I do recommend Black Hills Burger and Bun in Custer, too.

Jim was very nice and helpful - thank you for sharing this amazing place with others.
