Custer Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Custom Log cabin perched on the rim of historic Red Canyon, in the Black Hills

Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-clay canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. It offers full views of Red Canyon

from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances, natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes night bathing under the stars a life-time memory.

There Are No Better Black Hills Views: On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls and jutting peaks accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the west, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black”Hills, while a further gaze acknowledges, through beautiful open prairie, that Red Canyon does indeed have an end, and that Wyoming lies beyond.

You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to the most diverse wildlife population in all of the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions and Turkeys are common sightings whose perpetuation helped with your participation in the rental of Red Canyon Ranch. It is because of this reputation for such varied and protected wildlife that the Red Canyon area was chosen to host the introduction of a starter herd of Rocky Mountain sheep.

These cliff-dwelling animals are expected to migrate to Red Canyon as soon as the sub-groups go off to establish their own herds, eventually becoming a welcome addition to ever day life on the Ranch.

Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste.Nestled among the rolling hills are a multitude of quaint towns and cities, offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.

7,000 acres of hiking and horseback riding across this historic property featuring both forest and private preserve land.

Perfect!!!

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival we spent the first 1/2 hour in absolute awe of the views provided by the property. With the wind blowing in the trees and the scent of pines, we could not have expected a more perfect location.

While the first evening was warm (in the 90's) and the AC was needed, the rest of our stay was in the 70's during the day and upper 50's at night allowing the windows to be kept open to enjoy the sounds of nature.

The cabin is the place to get off "the grid" to enjoy and relax, it still has all the amenities you'd feel a need - satellite TV, internet, etc. We especially enjoyed hiking the area and the peacefulness of the deck to just relax, talk and read.

As other reviewers have indicated, there is eleven miles of gravel to negotiate, however we enjoyed a slow drive each time to observe the various wild life - everything from bison, deer and antelope to rabbits, squirrels and birds.

Many thanks to Mr. Farmer in having this cabin available to use - we look forward in planning a return trip in the future.

Absolutely fantastic!!

  • 5 of 5

The property was even better than the pictures show everything was clean and very well maintained. If you are looking for a quiet, serene get away this is the perfect place to do so. We enjoyed the solitude and hiking. The views are fantastic and the stars are so close that you could almost touch them. I would highly recommend the Red Canyon Cabin to any visiting the area!!!

My husband and I vacation in South Dakota almost yearly. This was by far the best trip so far due to this beautiful cabin and the scenery. Jim was an amazing host and whet over and above out expectations. We will definitely return and have shared our experience with family and friends.

Our dream vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed at Red Canyon Ranch -- we were here with friends in July 2013. We absolutely love this place. It has amazing privacy, access to nature, and comfort. The cabin is lovely and comfortable and the view from the deck spectacular. We could just sit all day looking at the canyon, listening to the hawks and the swallows. I did a lot of hiking out along the rim and into the canyon -- there are a few marked paths that are easy to manage as well as more strenuous opportunities. I could see coming here for a week and just not leaving (although we did do a couple of excursions into the parks to hike there). And then to soak in the hot tub on the deck at the end of the day -- complete bliss!

The cabin was spotless and perfectly well appointed, and Jim gave us clear instructions. We've already recommended this cabin to others and we definitely plan to come back. It's a real find!

Practical notes: it's a long way to the grocery store, so be sure to plan accordingly. If you're like us, you'll take the owner's suggestion and plan on staying at the cabin many or most days. Last time we had 5 people and it was a little cozy; this time with 3 it was perfect.

Our whole experience was outstanding. Mr Farmer made our entire stay very easy and enjoyable. We had detailed instructions on how to find the cabin and our first look at paradise was everything that we had hoped. It was the most relaxing vacation.
