Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-clay canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. It offers full views of Red Canyon
from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances, natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes night bathing under the stars a life-time memory.
There Are No Better Black Hills Views: On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls and jutting peaks accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the west, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black”Hills, while a further gaze acknowledges, through beautiful open prairie, that Red Canyon does indeed have an end, and that Wyoming lies beyond.
You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to the most diverse wildlife population in all of the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions and Turkeys are common sightings whose perpetuation helped with your participation in the rental of Red Canyon Ranch. It is because of this reputation for such varied and protected wildlife that the Red Canyon area was chosen to host the introduction of a starter herd of Rocky Mountain sheep.
These cliff-dwelling animals are expected to migrate to Red Canyon as soon as the sub-groups go off to establish their own herds, eventually becoming a welcome addition to ever day life on the Ranch.
Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste.Nestled among the rolling hills are a multitude of quaint towns and cities, offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.
At the Founder's Cabin, you'll have thousands of acres ti explore whether hiking or horseback riding across this historic property.
This property is owned by founders of BlackHillsTrailHead where you can learn about living in the only protected wilderness community locations in the Black Hills.
JWF purchased this cabin in 1995
It is located on the rim of Red Canyon, South Dakota's most historic canyon with unparelleled views, privacy and diverse wildlife ranging from elk to pronghorn to mountain lions.
The only place in the Black Hills where you WILL NOT hear a motorcycle during the Sturgis Rally!
We loved everything about this rental. It is very beautiful inside and out. Peaceful, quiet, and very relaxing. Scenery is breathtaking. Secluded, but well within driving distance to many activities. Many thanks to Jim for being very helpful and for sharing your home with us. Would highly recommend and plan to stay here again in the future.
This cabin will not disappoint. From the beautiful furnishings inside the cabin to the comfortable furnishings outside you will feel right at home. The breathtaking views from the deck are remarkable , I am not certain any other cabin in the area can beat it . Very pleased with the owners responsiveness to our questions and the information provided before our arrival.
Upon arrival we spent the first 1/2 hour in absolute awe of the views provided by the property. With the wind blowing in the trees and the scent of pines, we could not have expected a more perfect location.
While the first evening was warm (in the 90's) and the AC was needed, the rest of our stay was in the 70's during the day and upper 50's at night allowing the windows to be kept open to enjoy the sounds of nature.
The cabin is the place to get off "the grid" to enjoy and relax, it still has all the amenities you'd feel a need - satellite TV, internet, etc. We especially enjoyed hiking the area and the peacefulness of the deck to just relax, talk and read.
As other reviewers have indicated, there is eleven miles of gravel to negotiate, however we enjoyed a slow drive each time to observe the various wild life - everything from bison, deer and antelope to rabbits, squirrels and birds.
Many thanks to Mr. Farmer in having this cabin available to use - we look forward in planning a return trip in the future.
The property was even better than the pictures show everything was clean and very well maintained. If you are looking for a quiet, serene get away this is the perfect place to do so. We enjoyed the solitude and hiking. The views are fantastic and the stars are so close that you could almost touch them. I would highly recommend the Red Canyon Cabin to any visiting the area!!!
My husband and I vacation in South Dakota almost yearly. This was by far the best trip so far due to this beautiful cabin and the scenery. Jim was an amazing host and whet over and above out expectations. We will definitely return and have shared our experience with family and friends.
