Newport is a walkable town, and this neighborhood is quite conducive to walking. The neighborhood is very safe, and the streets are beautiful to walk along. Many of the houses have wonderful gardens and landscaping, and the colonial houses are nearly all in freshly restored form, true to their original classic styles.
This is the closest neighborhood to the Navy base, it's a 10 min walk or quick bike ride. There is absolutely no traffic to the base.
There are two parks in the neighborhood and two piers that are perfect for picnics.
There is a quaint restaurant and pub right in the neighborhood, only an 8 minute walk from the house. The downtown area start just past that, about 2 minutes walk farther. If you prefer to drive, everything in town is within 5 minutes. On the summer weekends you will need to know the back ways to make that work, which I will share with you. Bicycling is also a great quick way to get around and saves you from having to find a parking space downtown.
Newport in the summer: Newport is an amazing summer destination. It is nearly always cool here, typically 10-15 degrees cooler than on the mainland. It is really only crowded on the weekends. From Sunday afternoon until Thursday afternoon there is usually no trouble getting through town, finding parking, or getting into restaurants without a wait.
There is so much to do here it is hard to cover it all. Grass tennis courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the best sailing on the east, Golf, shopping, beaches, nature conservatories, colonial architecture - and the food is amazing. There are over 200 restaurants and pubs in Newport, and I can jump-start you on the best ones to try out. Festivals, concerts, comedy series run all year long, and in the winter there is an outdoor skating rink right in the center of town.
Off Season: Newport is quieter in the off season, but it is not dead. Most of the restaurants are open year-round, and there are still festivals from time to time in the winter. The bars and clubs still get a decent crowd even when it's cold. We usually don't get a lot of snow because the storms typically follow the mainland. However, it is *windy* here in the winter, and that means strong wind-chills. You do want to bring good gloves, hats & jackets.
Note to military and Navy base business people - This is the ideal neighborhood for working at the base. It is the closest nice/upscale neighborhood to the base, and you do not have any traffic to get through to get to the base, it is residential all the way. There isn't even a traffic light except for the one in front of the base itself.
Great house. Great neighborhood. Avram answered all my inquiries very quickly. I was glad we were able to have Xmas with our dog Darcy.
We were impressed with the home's combination of comfort, convenience and space. Four of us stayed at the house for five days and we were able to walk downtown and it was only a $7 Uber ride home after a night on the town. Avram is an attentive thoughtful owner who came over to greet us and left us a bottle of wine as a welcome gift. We were so impressed my brother is considering renting again for a wedding he's attending later in September and possibly when he and his wife celebrate their anniversary in Newport. You can fit two cars in the driveway (which we did) and if you need a grocery store, there is a Stop and Shop about a mile away ( a Walmart too). Well worth the price.
We loved this house. It was beautiful and well cared for, with lots of personal touches to make you feel at home. It's very well located, on a quiet street in a beautiful neighborhood. It's a nice, easy walk to downtown, less than a mile past everyone's beautiful summer gardens. Thanks for being so accommodating, Avram! What a wonderful place for our family to spend the weekend.
My husband and our two daughters (age 17 and 23) loved vacationing here last week. Avram and Kelsey were great and the house was adorable and comfortable. We used the available bikes to go into town and bike to the beach daily. Avram let us take our dog (even though she is about 104 lbs) so we did not have to take her to a kennel. The kitchen was well stocked with pantry items and we cooked two nights we were there.
Would definitely recommend this property to anyone and we would love to go back!
This property and property owner was great! The house has everything you could possible need and the owner was very accommodating and even came over to introduce himself (with his cute dog!) and make sure everything was as it should be...and it was! Avram assistant was also great keeping in touch and was at the house ready to show it to us when we arrived - both of them were VERY accommodating when we had a few requests. I highly recommend staying at this property, you won't regret it!!
The house is cozy and comfortable, clean and well maintained. The location is great-- a short walk to the center of Newport with many historic houses and beautiful gardens along the way.
Avram is a real jewel-always ready to help or answer questions and goes out of his way to respect your privacy.
My daughters and I had a great time touring some of the "mansions of the gilded age", shopping the unique shops and eating loads of scrumptious seafood (Rhumbline,a neighborhood restaurant was very good!) There are also great thrift stores and consignment shops. One of the highlights was Beavrtail Lighthouse and Park--a short drive away. It is an absolutely beautiful area.
I would definitely recommend the property to friends and family and hope to return for another visit.
Thanks, Avram, loved it!
My house is in The Point section of Newport. This is the most historic and best maintained neighborhood in town. One in five houses are from the 1700's, and more than half are over 100 years old. The neighborhood runs along Narragansett bay from the bridge to the edge of downtown. My house is on a quiet dead-end street with friendly neighbors who own their homes and are proud to show off their neighborhood to newcomers. It is only three blocks to a beautiful park on the water and public pier. It is about a 10 minute walk to downtown. There is a public dinghy dock right in the neighborhood where you can take a launch out to a mooring.
