Guestbook comments from the manager

Hale Alana exceeded our expectations and then some! Staying in this lovely house in this amazing setting was a vacation within its self. The house was perfect for our group of 3 couples, each bedroom afforded quite and privacy and the bedding for all of us was extremely comfortable. It was fun to meet in the lovely dining area in the mornings for coffee and computer time. The entire house was equipped with every detail we desired. The deck and hot tub were so much fun, we spent many hours there especially at sunset and the view was breathtaking. The gardens around the entire house were simply BEAUTIFUL and kept to perfection. We enjoyed the pool area, what a lovely setting in every way. Headed to the beach.....just check the storage room in the garage....there you will find everything you will ever need. Thank you Martha for everything you did to make sure we had the very best stay. We are now counting the days until we return.

We were in Maui for a family trip to celebrate 60th birthdays. This rental property made the trip such a wonderful and relaxing time. The house itself is very nicely laid out, with 3 very private/separate bedrooms and bathrooms. The living area and kitchen have beautiful décor and many items in addition to the typical rental property. The kitchen was fully stocked and the beach items (towels, coolers, snorkel gear, kids toys, chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, etc...) were extremely convenient. I would have to say the best part about this rental was the deck with its amazing view and also the pool area. The pool was very refreshing in the hot weather. The neighborhood was extremely quiet at all times and made this such a relaxing holiday. The listing indicated another tenant was located on the property, which actually was in a separate building from the main house and partially surrounded by trees. Privacy was not an issue at all.

We absolutely would love to rent this property again and will recommend it to friends and family.

Great family and holiday location!!

Awesome location very close to the Wailea area, panoramic ocean views, spectacular sunsets. This house has everything you need for people of all ages, very well equipped with beach toys for children as well. We had both sets of grandparents stay with my wife and 2 small children, everyone had very comfortable beds. The outdoor pool was really nice, as it made you feel that you were at a local secret swimming spot, surrounded by beautiful tropical plants. I would recommend this place to anyone travelling with a large group as it was well equipped which was "the best bang for your buck", after researching other VRBO's in this area. Martha and her assistant were extremely helpful in answering any questions that you may have, and they had a helpful book which gave you the local breakdown of beaches, restaurants, and activities to enjoy. It was a pleasure to stay their, and we intend on repeating another visit at this location!

Excellent Stay!

  • 5 of 5

I was there with my family ranging in all ages from 13 to 85 years old, celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary and my dad's 85th birthday. We were there for 11 nights, which included being there over Christmas.

Martha, the property manager, had been very accommodating starting from my initial inquiry about the property. She had also been very responsive throughout the duration of our stay.

The house itself is beautiful. There are three bedrooms, all which have bathrooms in each bedroom, all with showers. The nice thing is, there are no stairs in the house to get to any of the bedrooms, they are all on the main level. There are only a few stairs going down to the family room which also lead out to the lanai.

The house was very well equipped with everything we could have needed. Starting with the kitchen, there was every kind of utensil, pot, pan, coffee makers, and plenty of dishes and silverware for enough people for days. There were more than enough towels, linens, pillows, blankets, beach towels, beach toys, beach chairs, beach umbrellas, snorkels, etc.

There is an outdoor shower which was nice, with controlled temperature, that is connected to the garage. It is convenient because as soon as you get out of the car, coming from the beach, you can get all the sand off before entering the house.

The grounds are beautiful however, a downfall for us was getting to the backyard/pool. You have to walk out the front door and down the driveway to get to the back. It felt like it wasn't part of the house. The pool is beautiful but it is VERY cold. Cold to the point that it was not enjoyable to swim in or hang out at. It is clearly stated that it is not heated but even in 80 degree weather, it was shockingly cold. The hot tub on the other hand, on the lanai, was a bonus and was really nice to have.

After paying the final payment, 60 days prior to our arrival, we were sent a bunch of instructions and rules. Included in there was a heads up that there were long term tenants living in the cottage below the house. We specifically chose this house for the privacy and having our own home and were concerned. The cottage is actually a separate property at the bottom of the driveway, it is not part of the main house at all. The tenants were not a problem at all, we never even saw them the entire 10 days we were there.

The Hale Alana house was perfect for our family. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this property.

Not exactly as advertised

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at the home for 7 days in July. This home has a beautiful ocean view and lovely sunsets. Mornings were exceptionally peaceful with fragrant flowers and bird sounds. It was a short drive to beautiful beaches and town of Wailea. However, there are many things that we wished were disclosed before booking this property. We booked this property because of its size(3 b/3b) and it’s description as having newly remodeled kitchens and baths. The remodeling was partial leaving behind old, dingy kitchen cabinets and cracked kitchen tiles. We were also surprised to learn, after we had already paid that there were longterm tenants on the property. While they were not a problem and the pool was not shared…the description leads one to believe that the property is "private". It is also worth noting that upon arrival there was a long list of rules(a binder, in fact) and an agreement re: the use of the air conditioning unit. The agreement indicated that the security deposit would be pro-rated if the a/c was used more than their liking…which was no where to be found on prior leasing agreements. The afternoon sun beats heavily on the back of the house…leaving the home 80 degrees even with the a/c on and the blinds closed. With that temperature and direct sunlight it is unreasonable to think that we wouldn’t need the a/c when we are home for the afternoon/evening.

There were several smaller issues that all led to a less than spectacular stay as well. The barbeque didn’t work and the manager mentioned that previous tenants used a lighter indicating that she knew the bbq didn’t work before we arrived. There was no lighting on the outside patio, which made it difficult to eat dinner outside. While the pool was beautiful, the pool furniture was old(over 10 years old) and the old cushions didn’t fit the furniture well. Additionally there are limited hours for the pool, which was something we did not expect. While we were there, the manager had to replace the bbq, fix a toilet that the manager knew would run(still not fixed), secure the dishwasher, and fix the pool gate that did not close or lock. All of these repairs were made while we were there, which was disruptive.

While ultimately we were happy to be on Maui, we will not be returning to the property or recommending it. We have rented many homes in Hawaii and have never had this type of experience. There is much to be done to keep up a property and it seems the owner/manager are unwilling to make those changes.

Owner's Response: To all future travelers, we attended to each and every request that was brought to our attention. Maui county law does require long term tenants to live on the property. They do not use the pool or the garden when guests are in house. The House Rules below are standard in the industry. The following are some simple guidelines that will make your stay here more pleasurable: 1. Check out time is 11 a.m. Check-in is 2 p.m. 2. The pool hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. 3. Please use garage or drive way for yourself and guests. Our county vacation rental permit does not allow us to use the street for parking. 4. Please turn off A/C when you leave house for extended periods. 5. Please use the outdoor shower off the garage when you come back from the beach. Shower after beach before entering house and before using the hot tub or pool. 6. We recommend that you close the blinds when you leave in the morning. This will keep the house cooler for your return. 7. Enter and exit through the garage and close the garage door when you leave. Make sure the front door is locked and the windows over the kitchen sink and the window in the bedroom off the kitchen are closed. Although burglary is rare in Maui Meadows, we recommend that you lock up when you leave. Also, please keep garage door closed, especially at night. 8. This is a non smoking house. Please smoke in the driveway. 9. Quiet time is between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. Sound travels in this quiet neighborhood especially at night from the deck. Please be considerate of our neighbors. 10. Remember that the hot tub is designed to maintain its temperature, so you should not need to adjust the controls. Please let us know if we need to adjust the temperature. 11. Please be aware that any missing or damaged towels will be replaced from your damage deposit. 12. Remember - food left out on counters will attract ants and other bugs. 13. If you use the grill, please remember to prepare it for the next person’s use. The pool hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please relax, have fun, and make yourself at home. Dear Guests of Hale Alana, Eletric costs continue to escalate on our small Island. It is necessary to turn off the AC when the lanai doors and bedroom windows/door are open, ar there is no electronic shut off. Kindly turn off the Ac when you ar away from the house for extended periods, or adjust the thermostat to a higher temperature while you are away. Your attention is greatly appreciated.
