Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our 5 nights here so much. We wish we were not packing the car right now and could just stay here longer. The lodge is beautiful and very nicely furnished. The bonfire pit and hot tub were some of our very favorites. The kids favorite things were the foosball and pool table, and leaving the property one day for a zip lining trip. This setting was so relaxing and quiet, yet so close to the State Park. Thank you for calling the dog catcher for us to tell them about the sweet stray dog that wondered onto the property throughout our stay. By the time he got here, the dog wondered off again BUT came back again as we were packing to leave. The kids fell in love with the dog for the past several days so needless to say, we have one additional passenger for the ride back home. Her newly given name is Maggie per the kids! Must be fate as we were planning on getting a family pet. The kids are THRILLED to add Maggie to our family!

Top notch place! Truly a home away from home! Felt like all the wonderful comforts of home. Will definitely come back next time we are in Hocking Hills! We made lots of fun family memories celebrating my dad's 75th birthday! Thank you Darla and family for sharing your wonderful home with our family this weekend!

A beautiful, well equipped home.

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this home to anyone. In fact I can't wait to share it with my friend whose husband is in a wheel chair. The nature is awesome around the house, it's close to attractions, and the best part is you don't see anything houses when you are there!

very nice property, some issues

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this property but there were a few things that could be improved. First--the house is gorgeous and the isolated, woodsy location is spectacular. The hot tub was good to have and the game room was fun. But it would be good to see the owner fix a few things.

Most seriously, we were not notified until 3 weeks before the stay that "SUV’S ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (if you have one) FOR OUR INCLINED HILLTOP DRIVEWAY AND FOR TRANSPORTATION THROUGHOUT THE HOCKING HILLS, ESPECIALLY IN WINTER INCLEMENT WEATHER MONTHS." Having been to the area many times, we knew our minivan would be ok on the roads, and given the fact that we couldn't buy an SUV on such short notice, we figured we'd be ok. No one else had noted in the comments on VRBO that the driveway was a problem. When we got there, we could not get our minivan up the steep gravel driveway. We had to unpack the entire van and carry our stuff up the incline (we have driven our van fully packed on lots of steepish gravel access roads in Colorado, and this was just so poorly graded we couldn't do it). It was horrible and took several hours. Only later we found a different entrance further up the road. Other parties joined us later and had no trouble with 4WD and AWD. This was just really frustrating because nothing was mentioned in the info about the property that one finds in a search. Second, when the fountain in the pond would shut off, an awful sound would go on all night long. This made the bedroom right next to it really bad to sleep in and you could hear it faintly from the other room with the queen bed. It seems like something needs to be fixed or something. Also, the internet is truly terrible. We have friends with HughesNet in the boonies and it works much better than this did. There were times when we couldn't log on at all, so it isn't just that it is slow (which we did see in the reviews). Finally, the TVs downstairs didn't work with the Directv--something seemed to be wrong with the hookup. Again that is something that could probably be fixed easily. Overall, we did enjoy the stay but hope some attention could be given to these issues.

Owner's Response: This review somewhat saddens me, as I never received any communication during guest stay. We do send all stay confirmations one full month in advance of arrival. This is the first time (in 9 years) since we built our advertised hilltop home that someone had trouble using our driveway. Nearly all rural area homes suggest SUV's if you have one, but I drive my 4 door Honda without ever having a problem in our driveway, and numerous mini-vans over the years. I am truly sorry you are stating you had trouble with van arrival, that's not normal for our property. As far as the other things, if I was called at any point, I would have suggested limiting how many guest devices are on-line at once. The internet is rural, it is the best, most expensive available, but we do agree it's slow, but works if not all typical 8-12 guests on it at once. We wish it was capable of that, but it still isn't in our area. I use it for work emails, on-line searches, go on travel association websites in the area to book canoeing, horseback riding etc and it works well for those purposes. As far as the noise at night, I have to assume you are referring to the singing frogs out the master bedroom window. The wildlife does take over the Hocking Hills, most enjoy the frog noises after the 12 hour a day fountain shuts off, you can hear them more. I personally consider them my nightly sound soother but I guess the nature background noise may bother some. Sorry again the frogs were a bother to you. As far as the TV's, they do work, and I would have been glad to assist you with figuring out why you had trouble but I wasn't given the opportunity with a phone call. They worked directly before and immediately after your stay, and during our stay the next week after your departure. We really appreciate you taking time to leave a review, and for stating our property is a spectacular location and gorgeous. Enjoy the rest of your summer & safe traveling :) Sincerely, Darla
