Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Convertible bed(s), Sleeps 6

Welcome to one of the most unique vacation opportunities in the world. Only at Reef Watch do you get a car, driver and guide for the duration of your stay.

Hubert, our caretaker, will treat you like a king and a friend at the same time. He will enable you to experience Jamaica like a native and learn first hand what beautiful, kind people there are in Jamaica. The cuisine, sights, sounds, and people of our sleepy fishing village, Scarlet Hall, are part of the Reef Watch experience. Sit back and listen to the locals speaking their native tongue, Patois, while music from the village drifts through the air. The barrier reef is just offshore and will provide you with fish, conch and lobster to complete your authentic Jamaican meals.

Our secluded grounds include fruit bearing trees and plenty of shade, patio space, and a spacious observation deck for star gazing and sunbathing. You will return home a changed person with thoughts of a return trip.

Immersion tourism: Reef Watch is as far from the typical all inclusive Jamaican resorts as you can get. Guests are immersed in the culture, sights and sounds of our village while living amongst the Jamaican people. The adventure includes authentic meals, secluded beaches, and a guide to bring it all to life. We have plenty of sun and shade on the property. Guests can experience the sights of the north shore of Jamaica before returning to the solitude of Reef Watch.

Hubert James: The best part of Reef Watch is the people of our village, Scarlet Hall. In particular, Hubert, our guide and driver is the cornerstone of the trip. He lives directly behind our home, and he knows the north shore down to every detail. His knowledge base and easy going personality will enhance your vacation. Traveling to the attractions allows Hubert to fill you in on the details of the terrain, villages and people as you pass them on the roads. He will introduce you to his family and friends and he often knows the store and restaurant managers. If you like, Hubert will cook real Jamaican dishes for you in the Reef Watch kitchen. Hubert is an accomplished spear fisherman, so your meals may include fresh fish, lobster, crab, conch and octopus.

Attractions: Scarlet Hall is located close to many popular attractions. These include Dunn's River Falls, Martha Brae River rafting, and the Luminous Lagoon. You can visit desolate beaches or explore a farm in the nearby hills. Snorkeling, SCUBA diving and spearfishing are available. Many guests make overnight trips to Negril to enjoy some fine dining or live music. We can recommend a place to stay. Montego Bay and its shops and restaurants are less than 30 miles away.

Experience the Best Jamaican Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great vacation at Reef Watch!

We stayed for 7 days -Jan.1-8. Our group of 5 ranged from 15 to 86 yrs. old and everyone had a fabulous time!

The Reef Watch is exactly as described but the care and service provided by Hubert were above all expectations. The locals at Scarlett Hall were friendly and made us feel welcomed. Javian, his son was always around and willing to help out. Rex is awesome – you have to tell Hubert to bring you up the mountain to see him. His attitude and wisdom are inspiring. He gave us some of his bananas, coconuts, and oranges.

We went on day trips every day. These included horseback riding on the beach and in the ocean, the great houses and Wed. market day. We went swimming at night in the Luminous Lagoon – it was such an awesome experience. We played Lootie at nights with Hubert and the locals.

Hubert took us to a beautiful secluded beach that was ideal to go spearfishing and snorkeling. He taught the boys how to spearfish. Catching an octopus was the thrill of a lifetime for the 15 yr. old. Hubert cooked a lunch for us on the beach with the fresh catch of the day. Hubert and the boys caught a barracuda, lobster and octopus. It was a perfect day!! We had so much fun. Hubert is amazing, He knows everyone and is so knowledgeable about this area.

We had a scare when the 86 yr old in our group had to be rushed to the hospital. Thank heavens for Hubert! He got us there swiftly and did not rest until she was released (at midnight) and back at Reef Watch. He is a kind and caring person who will look after any situation that might arise with patience and diligence. He became a dear friend and we would recommend Reef Watch to anyone who wants to experience the best of Jamaica!

The home is in an area that feels unsafe, it is dated and has no modern amenities.

  • 1 of 5

The home is old, the carpets are stained, there is no hot water in the only bathroom. The electric outlets are not safe. There are dogs, cats, goats and sheep that are unattended. There are carvers that run chainsaws from 6:30 am all day long. The beach that is in "walking distance" is filled with broken glass and garbage. The area surrounding the home has garbage all around. I feel that I was very misled with the description of the house and the area.

Owner's Response: First the guest review data: 46 five stars, 3 four stars, 1 three star, and 1 one star rating, this one. Our guests generally love the Reef Watch experience! We can only speculate as to why this reviewer felt unsafe in our village, but there is less risk in Scarlet Hall than in an average US town or city. My children have walked in the village alone since they were 3 and 4 years old. The villagers, and especially Hubert, are honest, polite, and protective of our guests. When you stay at Reef Watch, you are immersed in a Jamaican village. This is precisely what makes our place unique. This includes roaming pets and livestock (although we lack the aggressive sheep that were mentioned in the review). Jamaica is poor, and there is garbage in places, but not on our gated, secured property. Our home is about 25 years old and it keeps improving. We have added square footage, hot water, an outdoor kitchen, a privacy wall, a screened porch, air conditioning, and many other upgrades over the years. The electrical fixtures are modern and have been inspected by a certified electrician. There is old carpet in one bedroom, and we plan to convert to tile at our next visit. We have no control over the village, beach, or country in general, but it is the realness of the village that we and our guests love so much. Villagers have every right to go about there business just as they would in any other country. This does include power tools. PLEASE read a few other reviews before forming your opinion. Many guests have returned multiple times and absolutely love Reef Watch, Hubert, Scarlet Hall, and the real Jamaica. We try to be as different as we can from the countless all inclusive resorts that keep the tourists away from the wonderful people of Jamaica. Reef watch is not for everyone, and we try to make that as clear as possible to all potential guests. Most who go return with their hearts full of happiness. Andrew and Sandie McLaren, owners

One Love

  • 4 of 5

From the moment we walked out of the airport, into Huberts kind welcoming words we knew this was why we chose Reef Watch. The home is exactly as described, If you want luxury, this is not the place for you. If you want a vacation of true Jamaican culture, food and people. Added the warmth of a great Family, with all the mix ins of the Local people, this is the home for you,

Hubert gives all of himself to you, in his teachings of the local game, secret recipes, and of his history and his homeland.

We Loved the outdoor shower, one of the best feature's of the cottage, also the wonderful sunning roof. Hubert not once made us feel like we were imposing on his time, when we wanted to sight see, he was very prompt, knowledgeable , and willing to do anything and everything asked of him,

The cottage itself is exactly that, a cottage with a comfortable master with very well working AC units, I do wish the oven knob would have worked without holding it in, but that was a minor detail. Also the twin rooms mattresses are a little on the hard side, but by adding the extra blankets and comforters, it softened it right up, So Once again if you want luxury this is not the place for you, but if you like adventure and believe the saying "Irie" everythings good then this is the place for you

Thank you Sandie for sharing your piece of Paradise with us and till next time "One Love"

A wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at reef watch. Just as the write up promices, Hubert is great. Javian (his son) also made us feel really welcome. We have taken some great vacations, but the experience of being so immersed in the Scarlet Hall community made this really special. We can't stop thinking about it. Hubert cooked us several wonderful meals (jerk chicken, fish he caught, lobster for lunch one day and ackee and salt fish(the national dish). He would have happily cooked more if we let him. We floated the Martha Rae which was awesome, spent a lot of time at Burwood beach, and also visited Doctor's Cave Beach and Aquasol. We toured Greenwood Great House and visited Rex. The only thing we wish we skipped is Duns River Falls but its so famous we wanted to see it-I can't even describe how crowded is was. The luminous lagoon was fun, market day in Falmouth was an experience and playing lootie at the local bar was a blast.

Best Vacation Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say but WOW! We stayed for 10 days - Apr 17 - 27, 2016. What an amazing experience. Hubert and his son Javen (sp?) were unbelievably awesome. We had 4 adults and 1 teen (13 years old). I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before deciding on Reef Watch-we were NOT disappointed. We played lootie and went on day trips every day. I cannot state enough that this is the place to stay - We had so much fun. House is exactly as described. The village and the people of Scarlett Hall were wonderful. Rex is awesome - you have to tell Hubert to bring you up the mountain to see him. He is so cheerful and sweet

- We went to Negril and stayed a night at roots bamboo (on 7 mile beach). Nice place and inexpensive too. People on the beach are a little pushy asking you to buy things constantly but a simple "No thank you" is sufficient

-We went to Ocho Rios-Dolphin Cove - shark swim and dolphin swim which were both an once in a lifetime experience. The Jamaican Travel Saver card ($20) gets you a buy 1get 1 free dolphin swim which brings the price down to $100 per person. Shark swim-2 for $50 so not bad

-After the Dolphin Cove Hubert drove us through the town and instead of going to Dunns River Falls (too touristy for me) we went to the Blue Hole instead - incredible and a must. There was no one there so we had the entire place to ourselves-only $10 per person. Excellent price for beautiful scenery and a beautiful swimming hole and waterfall

-We did the Martha Brae river rafting twice (it was so relaxing and inexpensive) that we couldn't help but do it again

-We did the luminous lagoon (Glistening waters restaurant). Restaurant had good food, but bring bug spray for you legs under the table. The lagoon was pretty cool experience ($25 per person and only about a 1/2hr trip but worth it to see a once in a lifetime experience)

-We went to the grocery store (Blue diamond) after getting to the airport - but tell Hubert you would rather go to the big one across the street - much more of a selection and better organized. Our first bill was $42,500 (J) which come to about $350 in USD. But was more than enough food for us.

-Hubert & Javen took us to the beach to go spear fishing and snorkeling-my daughter and husband loved it

-He will cook for you too. He caught a barracuda, lobster and octopus (fried is awesome). Jerk chicken was the best

-Ask him to bring you to try Fish Tea.

Tell him Chris Dave Tim Robin and Hunter said HI. We WILL be back

My favorite vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

Hubert and the locals quickly become family. I just can't say enough about this life changing experience. Watching the lunar eclipse in the village was a privilege I will never forget. Snorkeling with Hubert in the morning is very relaxing. Walking through the village , I quickly realized that I Love everything about Reef Watch. Go see Rex! Invite the locals over. Go play loodie. Become a Jamaican for a while! Just the simple act of giving the local kids a small trinket or toy , and their return gratitude , made me fall in love with the people of the village . I can't wait to go back!

Scarlett Hall is a sleepy fishing village between Falmouth and Montego Bay. The village is right on the water and close to many tourist sites. We are a day trip away from the entire North Shore from Negril to Ocho Rios. Snorkeling and shopping are only minutes away.
