Out of all the places on earth that we have been to what completes us is our home in Matapalo. We love surfing, yoga, peace, serenity, being off the grid, good organic foods, see wildlife and plants daily, being the only person frolicking on the beach, hiking and swimming at incredible waterfalls and in the primary forest, locals night at Martinas, hanging at the 'Monkey bar' sipping on some cocktails at En Canta La Vida, and having each day for us, our children and friends to experience something new every time you turn around.
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
We went to Costa Rica and after years of a dear friend of ours telling us about how magical the Osa Peninsula and Matapalo was finally we decided to go. We had over two weeks and wanted to see all of Costa Rica. So, we landed in San Jose rented a car and off we went! We first drove to Jaco and spent the night in Playa Hermosa, then made our way down to Quepos spent a few night s there and off we went to Matapalo. WOW! The drive in was magical and it felt like home when we drove in on this dirt road, through the jungle as monkey's swung by and then to the house we were planning on staying at for 3-4 nights before heading off to the Carribean side and then North. Well, let's just say...we never left. The wildlife, the people, the seclusion of being off the grid, THE SURF, walking on a beach and being the only ones, Friday night at Martina's and the magic Matapalo instills into your soul and your being. All the stress rolls off your back and all you feel is happiness and one with the earth, ocean, local people and the wildlife! This is how life should be lived and enjoyed.
When staying at our home, even though we like to be out of contact with the world and reality, the house has wireless internet, a small pool to float and relax while sipping on a cocktail or where you can watch your children play, has all the kitchen and BBQ'ing things you will need to create a great meal with friends, has a refrigerator and freezer, blender, games, caretakers who will clean and change you towels and sheets every 3 days (unless requested more for an extra charged), outside shower when you walk a few steps off the beach to the house to rinse off in, games, sprawling deck to watch the ocean while relaxing in the leather high top rocking chairs, caretakers who can set up local tours, spa services, cooks, etc. who are on the property 24 hours a day, 2 acres to wonder in and discover new things every time you turn around, hot water, tide pools right in front of the house to explore, top quality Jiron mattress to sleep on while falling asleep to the crashing waves and waking up with the howler monkeys, bonfires (seasonally), amazing views from every place in the home, kick back in the hammock, watch the surfers surf, or surf yourself, and the list can go on and on and.....
This has been such a magical place to be in and this couldn't have come at a better time for us.
Hearing the ocean in our bedroom at night, listening to the sounds of birds and monkeys - and the views of the trees and water - have simply wonderful. What a great job you have done designing your home. We loved the pool and veranda. You were right about this place being the best place to be with yourself.
Thank you for this wonderful experience. My total admiration for CREATING YOUR VISION!
Hello fellow travelers!!!
My fiancee and I were fortunate enough to have found Life's a Wave a few years ago. We fell SO in love with the house that we went back for ten days the following year, and then when we got engaged a few months later, we both knew exactly where we wanted to get married - our "happy place" on the Osa peninsula!
Lara and Bill graciously opened their house to us this February for our ceremony on the beach in front of their house. We stayed at the house with 4 of our best friends and then 50 of our closest family and friends joined us on the Osa (taking over most of the other houses on the peninsula) for a week of wedding celebrations and pure bliss!!!
Life's a Wave is the most special house that we've ever experienced. The rooms are spacious, the grounds are immaculate, the views are unbelievable, and the amenities are endless! The care takers, Lady and Olman will cook the most AMAZING meals and they go above and beyond to make you feel at home.
Waking up to the sounds of waves and the jungle, taking a private outdoor shower while watching the scarlet macaws and monkeys, drinking Costa Rican coffee on the deck in the morning while reading a good book, or dipping in the pool and ocean are all a part of the unforgettable experiences that you will have at Life's a Wave. Not to mention - the surfing, hiking, sailing, massages, and checking out Martina's, the local bar with delicious food and cocktails! The Osa has this wonderful rustic quality, and the house feels SO luxurious. The balance is spectacular - beyond words!
We plan to come back to visit Life's a Wave every year for as long as we possibly can - It truly is magical. We highly recommend that you experience the stay at this wonderful home.
We could not have done our wedding without the help of Lara - she is so generous, helpful, and she was SUCH a great resource for all of our guests' travel and logistics. She is amazing, her and Bill's house is beyond words amazing.
Do yourself a favor, stay at Life's a Wave and explore the Osa Peninsula - Costa Rica's last frontier!!!!

My husband was in heaven surfing right outside the house while the kids and I (ages 5 & 11) played with the beautiful white rocks and sand, built tee pees with the palm fronds and explored in the tide pools. It was such a great balance with the activities in and out of the property. At the house...games in the pool, the monkeys and bird life, the caregiver's cooking just to name a few. Outside...surfing, swimming in different bays, hiking to the waterfall, going to Martina's for dinner. It really worked for our family.
After spending the last three years exploring C.R with my extended family it was time to hit the Osa. I have had Life's a Wave on my radar for years. Here is what I found.....
1.THE HOUSE&PROPERTY... Are beautiful!! The house is set up perfectly for our group of 7. We never got in each others way and the house was very comfortable. The wood in C.R is beautiful and this house shows you that. The dining room table especially. The beds are all very comfortable and the fans did there job to keep most of us cool at night. We did have a fan break on us and it was never replaced so that was a bit of a bummer. You are in the jungle so it very hot and humid and once the sun goes down so does the breeze. My only complaint is the light over the table. It is very low so during our nightly game of hearts you are fighting the bugs. Maybe get a higher light with a fan? That would have made our nights a lot more comfortable. My daily walks around the property revealed something new almost daily. Lastly, the pool is awesome. Great for lounging around and watching the Macaw's do their thing.
2. THE BEACH...This was a big disappointment for our family. We are not a surfing family but we love the beach. I was under the impression that this was a surfing/swimming beach. It is Not. It is a surfing beach only. I use the word beach loosely as it is made up mostly of big piles of rocks with a few slivers of sand. It is however a very beautiful beach. The waves are huge and awesome and the views are simply breathtaking. There are a few other beaches nearby but I would say you need to be a very strong swimmer to use them as the rip tide is very strong. We did find lots of critters in the tide pools so that was fun for me and the kids. If you are looking for a beach to take a stroll, take a swim, and head back to pool this is not your beach. Playa Platanares is what you a looking for.
3. THE WILDLIFE.... Is good. We did see all four types of monkeys, a sloth, a basilisk lizard, and lots and lots of birds. The Macaw's steal the show. They are present every day and very fun to watch zip through the trees and devour the almonds. We didn't see any ground animals. I think all the neighborhood dogs keep them away for the most part. All and all a great nature experience.
4. OTHER NOTES... The animal rescue center is worth the trip. Carol is an amazing women with so much passion for wildlife. And sweetie pie will melt your heart. NOTE: The waterfalls are dry during the dry season.
We have stayed at another house on Cabot Matapalo. While there, we met a family staying at Life's A Wave. We fell in love with it! So, this year we went back for 10 days. We fell in love with it all over again. It is spacious and gorgeous. Lady and Olman were wonderful hosts, taking care of our every need. If you are coming to this area of Costa Rica, you must know it is not a resort, it is real life. You are getting your power and hot water from mother nature. The fact there is a modern refrigerator and hot water to us is AMAZING. If the water is not hot, it's because of the mother nature...not the house! When the sun was shining we had great hot water. Only one day was it warm. The solar electricity was steady and consistent (unlike the other house we stayed in). The fans at the beds were perfect and ran all night keeping us cool. The fact it has Wifi is amazing to us, as well. The wood in this home is beautiful. Surfing was great, wildlife was a constant show. The pool was a wonderful addition, we swam at night and looked at the stars. If I had to pick a negative it was the propane grill. Would have loved to have grilled some fish but it was just falling apart, which is totally expected being exposed to salt air all the time. I cannot wait to go back!
I´ve been to other houses in the area and this is by far the best house I´ve ever stayed at. It´s beautiful yet rustic, and in total harmony with the vegetation and the enviornment. Rooms are fresh and comfortable, kitchen is fully equipped and spacious; and it has a nice pool and social area. It´s located a few steps from Matapalo which, to my luck, was pumping during my stay. Olman and Lady, the caretakers, are very nice people and they have the house and the property very well taken care of. Others: good WIFI, beautiful gardens, hot water. It´s just great... For sure we´ll try and go back. Cheers. Javier
We enjoyed our stay, although we were expecting a little more based on all the rave reviews we read (maybe my standards are too high?).
- Location was perfect, as advertised.
- Spectacular wildlife on property (saw dozens of white-faced monkeys and Scarlet Macaws up-close!).
- "Lady," caretaker of the property, was very friendly and ready and willing to help us in any way she could. My daughter really enjoyed speaking Spanish to her; Lady was so patient and my daughter really appreciated that.
- The 12' pool was a great way to cool-off and very relaxing.
- Pricing for this time of year seemed high (but there were no other rentals available in the area). "High season" for this property was November 11 through August 31 (approximately 10 months), whereas Frommer's most recently updated website, shows Costa Rica's "high season" from December through March, which is 6 months less than for this property.
- Lights in Master BR did not work, nor were there any replacement found in the unit.
- Hot water in showers spotty at best (probably a by-product of solar heating?)
- Surf spot was more crowded than I would have thought (8-10 out at CM on a very average, head-high day). However, if you are an experienced surfer, you should not have a problem getting waves; just be sure to respect the locals (most in line-up were locals during my visit).
- Never saw propane BBQ on property, as was advertised; would have liked to use but nowhere to be seen.
Tree climbing, waterfall repelling, yoga, massage, facials, Spanish lessons, primary forest tours in the National Corcovado forest, zip lining, deep sea fishing in one of the most bio-diverse places on earth HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: surf lessons, tours to wildlife sanctuary, boating trips with the dolphins, private boats can be rented to take you to Pavones and other surf spots to surf or you can drive if you have a car, and much more!!!
There are also caretakers on site to welcome you, clean, maintain the 2 acres of breathtaking grounds, cook if you wish and answer any questions you have.
