I have been a coffee and avocado farmer for over 20 years.
The Owner purchased this house in 2005
Quiet, relaxing and a beautiful setting.
This was an excellent find, thanks to the verbal recommendation from a friend at work. We've stayed just a few doors down from this place a few years ago. The location is perfect; quiet, significantly cooler than down below, clean air, no traffic, VERY narrow road but residents are accommodating (make sure your car has enough power to climb---no you don't need a 4 wheel drive), abundance of avocados, wonderful banana bread (Gretchen, would you share your recipe?), and last, but not least, the best coffee on the planet right there where it is grown. You won't be sorry in booking this gem of a find.
My husband & I stayed in this wonderful place for 25 days. I was hesitant at first to be so far away from the tourist area, but this place is truly a gem! The closest grocery store is only 1.9 miles away (right at the turn off to get to their place). Walmart is 20 min away … but they don’t sell much produce or meat. Costco is 40 min away … best prices for most things. Kona Airport is 1 hr away.
The place was a great size for us. We even had friends stay with us for 1 night. I wouldn’t recommend the sofa bed (for adults) if they were using it for more than 1 or 2 nights. They do have 2 apartments in the lower level that you may be able to rent if you need to. The bed was comfortable & the bathroom was a good size (room on the counter to leave some toiletries. The internet allowed us to Skype our grandkids back home. The cable TV worked well. The kitchen had everything we needed & the BBQ was perfect. It was warm during the day & cool at night. We spent a lot of time simply reading on the veranda!
Their place is centrally located. Most things were a short drive. We went snorkeling a few times. Two- Step was our favorite place - app 15 min away. The volcano was app 2 hrs away. Green Sand Beach was app 1 ½ hrs away … we paid $15/per for a ride instead of walking the 4 mile hike. The other direction was Waipio Bay (most awesome view - bring a picnic lunch) & then we swung around & saw Akaka Falls. We drove up to the Summit one evening (only as far as the Visitor’s Center as we didn’t have a 4 whl drv). Manini Beach (15 min away) was my favorite … I could watch the waves splash up on those black rocks all day long!
The only problem that I had was the single-lane paved road up to their place … because we were arriving at night. But I checked it out on Google Maps & spoke to Gretchen about it. We also brought our GPS. It ended up being very easy. The only advice that I have is the same that Gretchen gave me … you need to go right to the VERY end of the road - until you get to their house. After we did it once, it was a breeze & very enjoyable. Even though you were up in the mountain it wasn’t a cliff-hanging drive!
Even though we can never be promised a clear night, their place has some of the best sunsets ever! Gretchen & Vic were always close by if we needed them. They were the best hosts - so easy to talk to & very helpful. Thank you so much the coffee, banana bread, avocadoes & mostly for your wonderful hospitality. We would definitely go back!
We rented this nice home for eight nights. The owner was very nice and friendly. She was very accommodating when we arrived late from our flight delay. Her home was very clean and had everything we needed during our stay. She even left a delicious, home baked banana bread and Kona coffee for us to enjoy. The weather here was cooler and the place was so relaxing and peaceful. We were glad we found this place and definitely we will come back and stay here again on our next vacation.
We stayed here last year and are returning this year. We prefer something a little bit away from the resorts. This fit the bill. The house is very comfortable, clean, light filled and spacious for us 2 (or even 4). Great location, easy drive to most things, especially good snorkeling and the bay. We enjoyed sleeping at this higher, cooler elevation. We enjoyed cooking in the ohana. Gretchen and Vic are friendly.
We loved our week at Gretchen's place. The setting is lovely, with a nice ocean view and lots of space to walk among the coffee, avocado, and fruit trees. The complimentary coffee, banana bread, and as many avocados as we could eat were the icing on the cake at this truly wonderful place. The house was very nice and very comfortable, with absolutely everything we needed. The location is a short drive up a one-lane road through lush tropical growth from the main road through Captain Cook. It's very close to the grocery store and the beaches. This is one of our all-time favorite places we've stayed. Thank you, Gretchen!
My husband and I are lodging proprietors, so we understand the attention to particulars needed to meet or exceed guests' expectations. We spent 11 nights here and were delighted with the experience. The house is spacious, light-filled, even more attractive than in the photos, skillfully constructed and tastefully decorated. The hospitable owners welcomed us with coffee from their plantation and homemade banana bread. A friend joined us for four nights and rented the single bedroom downstairs with its own half bath, fridge and TV. (This is not the separate apt. downstairs but is next to it.) A bonus: during our stay we feasted on a seemingly endless supply of their avocados, the creamiest we've ever eaten.
Coffee picking during season.
